    In this critique, we will address the implications of fishing for stringfish, fighting demons, paying taxes to a raccoon and ripping (tearing too tbh). DOOM Eternal deserves all the praise it's got, and some of the criticism too. Is it one of the best FPS games ever made? More interestingly.... is it better than DOOM 2016? Time to understand DOOM Eternal.

      @@memebot6490 not really those two weapons are the slowest to reload but deal the most damage regardless of the enemies. You only ever find yourself having to use them when critical timing is involved, for maximum damage in a small window. Ive beaten the first phaze he has in under a minute also, and how is it exploitative if the guns are designed the way they are? Balista is a single shot sniper rifle that you have to manage accuracy over anything else, and the super shotgun is the hardest hitting up close weapon in the entire game, to not be used to those two weapons as a start off combo is criminal in this game. There are still other ways to beat this boss easily without it tho, such as grenades and rockets during his stun phaze to maximize damage, or auto shotgun, or even chain gun is good, all after he is initially stuned though.

    Blood Punches DO contribute an important decision in combat, especially at higher difficulties. They are a one hit kill on pinkies, they devastate the doomhunter's carriage (especially effective combined with an ice bomb) and they are a guaranteed stagger even on Tyrants and Archviles, so make for an excellent combo tool combined with the frag grenade stagger.
    It was 2016's melee that was mindless and contributed nothing to decision making, you didn't question any time fodder came into your crosshairs, just mash melee for free health.

    The "new" mancubus design is just supposed to look like the design from 1993... or whenever DOOM came out.
    They changed a couple designs to be more throwback-y, like the hell soldiers. The cyberdemons look more like the old school tyrants, the cacodemons have blue blood like the original, the archvile and the arachnotron are back, acid and the chemical suits are also back, and the unmakyr is also in the game now (it had a different name though). There's definitely more that I'm missing, but it's super cool how they reference the originals.

    I found that the game itself had masterfully improved the gameplay and game "feel" of the original, and (for the most part) greatly introduced new mechanics to the franchise. Music is great, there were tweaks added to the game that vastly improved it's strategy, like the whole thing with the chainsaw. In DOOM 2016 combat arenas felt like empty spaces in which demons appeared, making the ending portions of the game repetative and boring, and once I got the Super Shotgun I only used it until the end, while DOOM Eternal made the world feel more alive, despite the demons, and you have to switch your strategy multiple times in the game to fight efectively, making it engaging. The story was good, and personally, I rarely read the codex entries, yet was still able to jump into the story and understand it within the first two levels. Also, I love the secrets and their integration to the levels. Also personally, I think this game is not only a massive improvement to the last one, but also one of the best FPS games ever.

    They need to get rid of the “find the sweet spot” hint for the Marauder. The best way to deal with him is to get as far away from him as possible and have him charge you. The only things he’ll do at a long distance is throw his axe at you (which is easy to dodge) or do an extremely choreographed lunge attack that gives you an attack opening. Stun with a super shotgun blast and then follow with either another super shorty blast or swap to the ballista for a quick hit. Rinse and repeat 4-5 times. He only ever spawns his dog when his shield is shot by either you or another demon. The Marauder is honestly a fantastic enemy type that is meant to put you against a near equal power level enemy on the playing field. He is the queen in the chess analogy. I honestly think he is a great addition to the game. Another strategy is to shoot a BFG shot over his head, so when he turns around to block the lightning as the shot passes, you have a pretty long damage opportunity. Doom Eternal is a genuinely hard and rewarding gaming experience, which is hard to come across nowadays with almost every game trying to appeal to everyone. ID and FROM are pretty much the only developers that still use difficulty to its best possible extent which elevates the game and gives you the adrenaline rush you get from beating a boss in soulsborne games or a slayer gate in Doom.

      The issue with the Marauder is that he contradicts the entire game's difficulty, but not in the "you're on the same playing field" kind of way.
      Doom Eternal is hard. Really hard. But unlike 2016 (which became piss easy once you've learned it's mechanics) Eternal is STILL hard. Even after mastering every single one of Eternal's mechanics it's still a challenging game with a lot of room to experiment. The Marauder tho? He's hard. Until he's piss easy. Why? Because the Marauder doesn't actually tests your skill. It only tests your patience. The moment the Marauder's mechanics are understood he turns from a formidable enemy into a time waster, you just sit there and wait for an opening to fire at him. He's not a threat anymore. And no just because you can make super cool tricks with fast weapon switching and kill him in like 2 seconds doesn't mean he's challenging, since in both scenarios (killing him quick or waiting for the openings) he's never a threat. Also no none unique enemy should ever be utterly immune to BFG. It's nonsense.
      On a personal note, I think he just looks silly. Not his model but the way he runs around. He looks like they made him regular running+attack animations and just sped them up by like 170%, it's absolutely hilarious to me.

    Good review. Few points, lets go:
    1) Blood Punch - contributes to the whole weak point system. Cyber mancubus, Pinky, Doom Hunter - all of them gonna get destroyed by that thing. But even outside of it, it useful instrument to get out in clutch situation or push away melee demons. Also DO NOT underestimate damage of that thing, it HURTS. ALSO charged blood punch allows you ever so slightly but dash or/and change your direction almost instantly cuz it autolocks on demon you want to slap; it sounds weak but it can and will contribute to your whole moveset, just like teleporting with chainsaw. Speaking of...
    2) Chainsaw 1 slot refills each like 10 seconds. You literally can spam SSG and never run out of ammo if you chainsaw fodder by cd. Never had problem "Chose only one weapon". Btw, shooting puzzles usually has one box of ammo for heavy cannon which respawns infinitely. IDK how did you miss it.
    3) Demons looks like this as an homage to older games, this is fully intentional by devs.
    4) Tutorials kinda suck, do agree, but I cant see how they can make them better without forcing player for basically play tutorial for half an hour. I think it is like bitter pill - just swallow this shit and move on.
    5) Platforming in doom was a thing since f-cking doom 1. Seriously, look at some levels. They literally platforming for a game where jump is not a thing. Also 2016 had really boring level transitions. You pretty much just walk between arenas. Now you never feel bored cuz occasional encounters or jump puzzles. And juuust when you get tired of the jump puzzles, huzzuh, you already on new arena, start blasting pal!
    6) EDIT: missed 6 point lmao
    7) Gladiator phase 1 and Marauder pretty much the same category. See, the problem is - you people never tried to think JUST SLIGHTLY outside the box. Pretty much everything that works against marouders shield work against gladiator phase 1 as well, so here's marauder cheeses:
    SSG whirlwind - wait for attack, blast him with SSG. Instead of backing off, dash behind him while he stunned ans blast him again. THEN DASH BEHIND HIM AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN MVAHAAHAHAHAHA WHOSE YOUR DADDY BITCH cough cough yes, so you just stunlock the poor thing into oblivion.
    Remote detonation Rocket Launcher + Ballista - a way to blow up marauder literally from other end of arena. Fire rocket behind him. Detonate it, while he staggered shoot with ballista, rinse and repeat.
    Stickies cheese - just trow stickies to his legs. Thats it. You can easier take your sweet time and kill him with stickies alone, or you can blast him with other weapons while he stunned. Frag grenades work too, but eh.
    BFG dilemma - Shoot BFG above marauder. Now he either have to block tendrils with his shield exposing his back, or block your shots and get toasted by BFG tendrils. Oopsy!
    Lock'n'cheese - step 1 - pick LockOn Rocket launcher. Lock on marauder, keep dashing away. Once he is attacking you - shoot. Then lockon and shoot again. Done. Dont want to wait for attack? While locking on, frag grenade behind him to stagger, then shoot.
    Marauder is a joke once you learn his pattern. Seriously, I am all for buffing him.
    8) To be fair, preator suit token system is, like, pretty much the same as it was in doom 2016. Cant say much here. Sentinel crystals - same as argent cores but more useful.
    9) Interaction with Haiden might look weird, until you take into account that Earth is under siege and there tons of people dying each moment. So it is entirely in character for both of them to forget past for a moment and focus on a main threat.

    Fantastic video, and I was surprised at how much I still agreed with most of the things you had to say against the game, in particular about the soundtrack (I adored almost every single track of 2016's OST, while most of this one felt weaker and less iconic, but the highs were higher than anything 2016's had besides maybe BFG Division).
    I do however still disagree on your take on the Marauders, which seems to be somewhat similar to most people's complaints on them. It feels like it comes from a place of a perspective overly restricted due to the way the in-game tutorial explains how to deal with this enemy. I personally never had too much trouble with the Marauder, and love kiting him through the arenas while clearing other foes, so I can focus on him. Maybe occasionally landing a shot in here and there. Not sure of this either, but from what you explained I got the notion you felt there were only one or two restricted ways to deal with them. There are multiple strategies to deal with them and variations there-in, including weapon switching combos with or without grenades, lobbing stickies at their feet or behind them, remote detonating rockets behind them, circling around them with the meathook to shoot them from behind, even use the BFG above them so they turn around to guard against the tendrils, exposing their backs to us. If you haven't already, I recommend watching Under The Mayo's videos on the subject, particularly the recent Part 2 of "In defense of the Marauder".

    The problem with Eternal's story is that there's a lot of just watching Doomguy standing there while being given exposition. Doomguy kneeling in front of the king dude monologuing, him walking around the two priests as they give their own monologue, the entire Betrayer scene being just him spouting some serious shit and giving you an item. Now compare that to the entirety of the Phobos level. It was great. The badass intro of everyone being scared of Doomguy, him pressing the trigger in the BFG impatiently, using a railgun to traverse the level. It was him just going "fuck your shit" and doing things *his* way. No bullshit, all action.
    What made Doom 2016's story work (aside from the two moments where Hayden monologues to you) is that it was given entirely through Doomguy being violent. Every time Hayden tries to bullshit an excuse he gets angry and breaks something, when he starts breaking the argent energy machine he takes a second to ponder, he makes a back-up of VEGA, during the intro when Hayden says "for the betterment of humanity" he looks at the corpse next to him as if saying "oh, really?" We get all of his characterization with a pair of hands and him being constantly pissed. The codexes made *that* better because they gave context to the scenes that worked well by themselves.
    That's why the exposition level in Eternal was so boring, because there was no characterization throughout it and was instead a dull path with some codex entries. The game already gives you codex stuff without having to stop the action to that extent, having an entire level just to get more codexes was completely unnecessary. At points it feels like the game is taking the story way too seriously, when the fun in 2016 was that Doomguy didn't give a shit.

    • @king_kappa5263
      @king_kappa5263 4 роки тому +7

      It gives him more character. When king novik was talking he bowed out of respect if you read his codex you'd understand why. He couldn't kill the priest right then so he probably wanted to intimidate them and it worked, with the marauder he was probably seizing him up but the point of cutscenes on top is to show off your skins and his movements. Hes still mad aggressive and dont care they just add to him imo. And Hayden/seraphim was needed to help him due to the threat being much larger. I also thought alot of the exposition was in the moment type stuff because a fat majority of the story is in the codex.

    • @carcosian
      @carcosian 4 роки тому +3

      @@king_kappa5263 2016 established his character as a no-bullshit killing machine. The game was self-aware about what people wanted in a Doom game (gameplay not story) so they used Doomguy to showcase this in a sort of meta way. Players don't care about story, they just want to kill demons. Doomguy doesn't care about why you're messing with demons, he just wants to get the job done. Kneeling in front of King Novik is *boring*. There's nothing happening and it's actually the kind of stuff the first game was poking fun at. 2016 didn't need slow-ass cinematics to get Doomguy's character across, so Eternal shouldn't have done them either.
      Doomguy staring down the Marauder is standard badass dude stuff, nothing wrong with that scene.
      Arc Complex and Mars Core were pretty much perfect in that regard. Doomguy getting pissy because the big gun won't fire is hilarious.

      Carcosian But it’s at least better than having two 8 min. unskippable cutscenes where Samuel tells you where to go next, which are way worse than skippable cutscenes that still have a sense of comedy and give Doomguy some small character moments. When you have to talk to Samuel, you can’t skip it, and Darin De Pauls voice doesn’t save how boring it is for a cutscene to play around you with no agency. Which is funnily enough the opposite of what you say is so good about 2016’s storytelling.

    • @carcosian
      @carcosian 4 роки тому +2

      @@death4149 Several scenes plus an *entire level* is not better than one scene (two, really, the argent energy one is dull too). It's a bad comparison. Eternal's bad points don't magically disappear because 2016 has some too.

    10:50 When you go back and replay levels, you'll do so with all your weapons and abilities you've accumulated. I'm not sure weather or not you realized it. The way this whole sentence is written is just really vague. But yes, you can still go all the way back to Level 1 and be completely overpowered for it.
    I should also point out that there's way more freedom to fighting marauders than you let on. Like every other enemy in the game, you can kill marauders with any weapon. ANY. WEAPON. One way to cheese through it and completely bypass the proposed strategy is to just use remote detonation rockets to blow up behind or next to the marauder you're fighting. He's completely helpless. Heck, even when fighting him the "normal" way, you can still lay three or four hits on him before his shield goes up, and kill him in under 20 seconds.

    As a player, I could never get over the feeling that I'd missed an entire game between D16 and DE. I thought the natural progression from D16's ending would be for us to fight through hell (maybe with the hell priests capturing you and all that), you fight out of hell, and then are spit out on the earth's surface. The beginning of DE is so jarring, and it will forever be my biggest gripe with the game.

    Now i agree with everyone else in the comments on the marauders because they are easy enough to bait and with the double barrel you chain hit them into oblivion. But they fundamentally break the flow of combat, especially when they show up later because you basically go into clean up mode and then stand x distance from them just to bait them into that one move you need them to do so you can punish them

    I don't think you've mastered the Doom Dance. From watching gameplay I think you tend to panic, and start to mash your keyboard a little bit when the fights start getting hectic. Now this video is older, so this might have changed, but your criticisms of the combat reflect this.
    Ammo- Ammunition in Eternal I have never found to be an issue once you understand the Doom Dance. Your chainsaw passively recharges to one charge for a reason, and every arena will have fodder demons roaming about for this very reason. I've found that even when spamming two weapons on Ultra-Nightmare, the Super Shotgun and Plasma Rifle, I'm never stripped for ammo. In a lot of your gameplay I see that when your low on ammo you go to the fodder demons and just kinda kill them either by conventional means or with glory kills, but in each other these times you almost always have the chainsaw charged. Understanding the chainsaw is your lifeline to keep you in the fight is a big part of mastering the gameplay, if you understand the rhythm of shoot, glory kill, chainsaw, you probably won't have ammunition issues.
    Blood Punch- Spamming "E" when in a pinch is a panic move. You're mashing keys hoping for a solution without understanding the recharge for the Blood Punch. Remove melee from your mind, Eternal basically doesn't have a melee attack. Only use "E" for glory kills and Blood Punch, and I think you'll find yourself not panicking for a melee as much. But Blood Punch can be used tactically, especially towards the end of the game where you're constantly getting recharged for Glory Kills. For example, I kill a mancubis with super shotgun, dash, Blood Punch, super shotgun, which on UN is usually just kills them. It takes maybe a couple of seconds, but it's a real use for the Blood Punch, knowing how the mechanic works will help a lot.
    The Marauder- There are dozens of videos going into this, thinking that the Marauder is a restricting mechanic is simply not true. Creative gameplay and problem solving make Marauder's just another fun obstacle to overcome.

    The first time round I really struggled with the marauder badly like to the point that when I saw him the second time I quit. However, the second time it was a breeze. The secret is you've got to shoot him with the super shotgun when his eyes go green and then quickly switch to the ballista then shoot him again. Repeat a few times.

      The last four levels, especially Urdak, will constantly crash on me when I try to boot them up. Crashes happen throughout, but especially there. Glory kill highlights often don't show up. While I was fighting the final boss, all my weapons turned invisible until I respawned. In the same fight, all the enemies suddenly had super blurry textures until I respawned. And I probably don't even need to mention how what seems to be the majority of lost souls keep getting snagged on thin air.

    Finally someone mentioned the nerfed melee. I still dont see why they did that, it just feels off considering melee was a good way to get someone JUST into execute range. Now you gotta risk blowing them away with your gun. This was especially bad early on before I got the blood punch. Like...doomguy uses an armsword now, so...why is the melee weaker?

On higher difficulties, If you’re low on health, shoot the BFG in the distance, use the window when he’s shielding himself from it to get in damage or farm minions for health.
