I am totally opening it. I buy to open. Not save sealed with hope that it becomes crazy expensive. Sets like 1990 through today are getting opened everytime. Go for it!!!
My mom just bought me the exact same thing for my 32nd birthday yesterday. Haha. I've been debating the same. Thought it was cool just as a sealed box. Definitely opening it now.
I would have opened it as well Mike. I love the excitement of seeing what I could get. It stills gives me the same jitters as when I was a child opening up a pack of cards. Thanks for sharing!!!
"to open or not to open" that is the question. For me, a set builder, I started opening these factory sets back in 2004 after having already hand built my set. Being a Red Sox fan, I would always pick out Red Sox addition factory sets. This was my means of getting other Sox players I wouldn't otherwise have gotten. Those Sox players were then included in my set. The remainder of the set was put aside. They eventually went to only the big MLB rookies. I stopped this practice in 2009 or 10. Now I fear those factory sets will be bricks. Open and enjoy the set. Show it off to those who care.
If the set is in a ventilated area it shouldn't be a brick...thats if not opened...open it enjoy it .. i do thats what its for....the new cards are less to become bricks in temperature environments that are without condensation or humidity factors.
Thanks for commenting. I do believe I should be fine as my card room is well vented and thermostat for heat control. I did have some 2001 to 2003 that came from wax packs that bricked up on me. I think it was more do to over packing my storage boxes and the coating put on cards by Topps. My factory sets that I opened for special cards are all stored on shelves off the ground. I agree with you, they should be fine
I have the 2021 and 2022 topps gold star sets....kinda neat to get a limited run set, but they were the walmart green box sets....and they came with 5 foilboards each....pull a good rookie foilboard and you got some value there....plus you get all the rookies....though my 2022 set had a tork, witt wander and jrod and oneil cruz variation rookie cards....complete set is a good buy, only 60 bux and you get every card made for the cost of a couple blasters...I always pick one up every year
I would have opened that set. I buy a retail factory set with the 5 rookie variation cards every year and leave it sealed. If I buy a Walmart or Target exclusive factory set I open it. The Walmart sets have a 1 in 3 chance of being a gold star set. The cards of J-ROD, Bobby Witt and Spencer Torkelson were short prints in Series 2 and numbered 658 - 660. There was quite the chase to pull those 3 short prints. Topps added cards of those 3 players with different photos to the factory sets as an added bonus.
I bought a 2018 Topps set 3 years ago and it had the base 700 card set and 5 foilboard parallels. I decided to open it and one of the 5 cards was a Rafael Devers RC shimmer foilboard /199. I think it was worth it that time. So I believe it can be worth it. I still have Topps sets that are still factory sealed. Maybe at some point I will open, maybe not.
They are like a Birthday gift, open the dadgum boxes and see what's inside. I bought storage shed with 289 boxes from 87-95. Opened every single box The 1993 U/D I opened was all bricked together. Stuck like glue. Come to find out after ripping apart the whole box was GOLD holograms. 1 out of every 15 boxes. Find the Jeter and pulled apart, the card in front pulled 100s of tiny pieces of the front. The whole box worthless. Around 15k I estimated.
I haven't bought factory sets since 1990 because they still make me feel like they're junk wax. I did find a 1989 Donruss factory set at Goodwill about a year ago for $3.00... Knowing the Griffey would be gone, I still bought it. It sat in my closet for a few months before I went through it. To my surprise, the Griffey, Randy Johnson and every single card was in it. I thought about buying this years for the Julio alone. But think I'll just buy the single instead. I probably would've opened it also..
I buy the parallel sets (use the shake test on the green boxes at Walmart), and move those for a slight profit, usually about 10-20%. But you're right, with the Target sets the chance at the relic and auto inserts can make those sets worth a TON more. I guess it's all about the gamble. EDIT to add: In addition to the five chase rookies that they gave you (like the 660 Tork), you ALSO get the base versions of each of the cards those rookies replace - so you also have, somewhere in that box, the 660 Ohtani.
Julio Bobby and Spencer were ssp in series 2 wax packs. They are included in the factory sets but aren't the same "rarity" as the ssp variations as pack pulled.
My son was born in 2022 so I bought that same box for him and did the sme for my daughter in 2015. They both get it for their 18th birthday, they can decide to open or not!
I always question myself about opening wax. The more expensive the wax the more I feel “dirty” afterwards. ‘22 factory sets have gotten so cheap at shows, I probably wouldn’t feel bad opening one.
Personally I buy a factory set ever year and put it up. Nice pull all the up same. Maybe you should call the Franco a one of one with the loose thread lol.
The film 'seven' is spring ING to mind.. What's in the box??!!! Etc etc. How much is the box.. Has it staved off your craving for wax opening for another week... Luv the vids and the Friday finds👍👍👍🇮🇪
Absolutely I'd have opened it! What's the point of having the set otherwise? It's not rare. It's nice! It's a great gift, but you still have the set whether it's opened or not. So yes, definitely, I'd have opened it.
I would of done the same mike and you don't have to worry even if you did open some packs were all saying do it lol. So just go out and buy some for your birthday you know you want lol. Were all for it just rip rip rip.
@@JunkWaxHero In 83 I broke up Fleer and Donruss sets to take out and collect the rookies and stars. Now I plan on putting the sets back together. I already have graded copies of the players I'm interested in anyway. So my idea to you is keep the set together and then buy the cards you really want on the secondary market.
I don’t know the outcome yet, but I appreciate you doing it for our entertainment at the very least.
lol comment of the week
@@JunkWaxHero haha, sweet!
Buy 1 and stash 1 😉
@@robrja good idea!

✅
Yeah I would open it, since when you see the biggest collections the sets labelled by year are usually loose anyway and it looks fun organizing them.
My mom just bought me the exact same thing for my 32nd birthday yesterday. Haha. I've been debating the same. Thought it was cool just as a sealed box. Definitely opening it now.
Happy birthday!
Appreciate you opening the box for our entertainment. It’s a good set and the relic, 3 rc’s, and short prints were well worth it.
I would have opened it as well Mike. I love the excitement of seeing what I could get. It stills gives me the same jitters as when I was a child opening up a pack of cards. Thanks for sharing!!!
Exactly the same feeling I get
I would open it too. Was unaware of the hit in the box
Yeah the hit is too tempting
Ahh, the rare loose thread SSSSP. Congrats, nice hit!
lol thanks
First sealed set I ever opened was 1986 Topps baseball. Still have it in a binder. And still opening sets!

The teal Walmart set with 1 in 3 gold star parallel set is the one you want. But you got to open them to find them!

Mike, nice video. I have always wondered if opening a complete set was worth it. Kind of cool, especially since I am a short print collector. Thanks.

A numbered Devers RC is worth it to me too!

Heck yea I’ld open it. I buy to open and enjoy the cards not to save for an investment.
Sorry That Happened to You But just wanted to Say That You have A Blessed Beautiful Mom With A Big Heart Mary Blessings To Her
I have a 2018 Topps Set that was given to me. Every couple months I think about opening it. Reward is not worth the risk to me, yet.....
Good willpower!

Yep, agreed

Yes!
I love complete sets I think you get better quality than what you would get in a wax pack
Life is short. Open it. Maybe Topps can replace the damaged patch card.
Nice pull. Yeah, would open
I’ll take it
Would definitely open! Good call!
I think so too!

Thanks! I got some wax for my birthday so I’ll open those on camera for a Thursday video probably. That’ll help the wax addiction 😆
Would you open it?
Absolutely would have opened it.
Well, that Wander Franco card might be worth nothing after these allegations against him came out.
Don't worry, Mike. You should see my desk. :)
Yeah I can only fight it so much. It’s not that bad 😉
Absolutely I'd have opened it! What's the point of having the set otherwise? It's not rare. It's nice! It's a great gift, but you still have the set whether it's opened or not. So yes, definitely, I'd have opened it.
Fair point
What's your Cheez-it flavor of choice? We like the extra toasty version.
lol could you see them on my desk? I couldn’t even tell. I’m an addict. Cheddar Jack or Extra Cheesy for me.
Every day you wait the more you miss out on the price ceiling.
I’m not an investor. I’m a collector. Would definitely open it.
Also not an investor. Just never had a factory-sealed set before and didn’t know they put “hits” in them.
I’d open it. Cards are meant to looked at.
Fair point
I would of done the same mike and you don't have to worry even if you did open some packs were all saying do it lol. So just go out and buy some for your birthday you know you want lol. Were all for it just rip rip rip.
I got some for my birthday and will open on video later this week!
meh… you only live once
You’ll give any excuse to open it. Open it Mike!!! It’s your birthday and your mom gave it to you.
I actually wasn’t going to! She gave it to me on Saturday and it wasn’t until last night that I was looking at it and noticed it had a “hit” included.
Is it worth it to cut up memorabilia to glue smidgens of fabric to a piece of cardboard?
A thousand times NO!!!!!!
No. I wouldn't open it.
First person to say no! I’m curious why you wouldn’t.
