My biggest drawback against Castro is his involvement in the Horn of Africa in the 70’s where Cuban soldiers aided Mengistu Haile Mariam’s derg against Mohamed Siad Barre during the struggle for liberation in the occupied Somali region in Ethiopia that was “gifted” to the Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie by the the British for Ethiopia’s contribution to the efforts during the World War. This was done without consideration of the fact that the people living in the region are overwhelmingly Somalis, see themselves as Somali and desire to join their land with the existing Somali state. Castro, without putting proper research and understanding into this issue, sent his soldiers to defend Ethiopian troops and to fight the Somali forces. With the support of Soviet technicians and advisors as well as Cuban troops, the derg forces managed to push back Somalia to its current territorial border and helped establish the reign of terror the derg unleashed on Ethiopian civilians and mostly Somalis living in the occupied region. Not to mention, this was the beginning of the end for Somalia as a dominant power in the Horn of Africa as the state began to unravel due to the loss of morale during the war. Even today, Somalis remain bitter towards any mention of Cuba and Castro and although from a historical persppective, I can see the good Cuba did in the other liberation movements it supported, however it still remains an unsolved and unjust interference that costed Somalia heavily.

Here, Ture declares that Castro is a “pan-africanist of the highest order” because he [Cuba] sent soldiers to fight alongside the MPLA when Apartheid South Africa was attacking Angola during the 70s. However, during that same time period, Cuban soldiers were sent to the Horn of Africa in support of Mengistu Haile Mariam and the psuedo-Marxist Derg military regime that was warring with both Eritrea and the then Somali Democratic Republic. Cuba had effectively aided in the defeat of the Western Somali national liberation struggle against a colonial entity (Ethiopia). Cuba had acknowledged its blunder and incorrect position in the Horn of Africa in the form of an apology to Eritrea, as Cuba did send soldiers in support of the Derg-led Ethiopia, who Eritrea was struggling against for national liberation, but til this date, there has been no apology issued to Somalia. No acknowledgement of any wrongdoing to Somalia, nor to any of the other nations trapped within the colonial borders of the dependent colonial entity known as Ethiopia. Nothing. Is it correct to call Castro a “pan-Africanist of the highest order” because he sent soldiers to Angola to fight off Apartheid South Africa, while also sending soldiers to the Horn of Africa to aid a pseudo-Marxist military regime that maintained borders of a dependent, colonial entity, and killed/displaced countless Africans? Lastly, I believe this video is from the 90s, both the Angola war with Apartheid South Africa (along with its civil war), and the Ogaden War (the conflict between the Somali Democratic Republic a genuine Marxist-Leninist country vs the Derg-led Ethiopia) started in the mid to late 70s, so it goes to show how there has been a neglect in studying the geopolitics and histories of East Africa, specifically the Horn of Africa.
@@Adyingcolonialism42 intent is meaningless to those who were wronged. and not only were the somali people (and others within the hoa) wronged, the somali people, to this day, have received no formal apology from cuba. cuba has yet to acknowledge its role in the devastating defeat of the somali democratic republic, which led to its decline and eventual fall + civil war. so much for sincerity…
