  • Rishi Sunak has apologised for the infected blood scandal on a “day of shame” for the British state.
The Prime Minister told MPs that he wanted “to make a wholehearted and unequivocal apology for this terrible injustice,” which marks the first time the Government has formally said sorry in the decades-long tragedy.
He said it was “an apology by the state to every single person impacted by this scandal,” stretching back to the 1970s, adding in the Commons: “This is a day of shame for the British state.”
It followed the conclusion of a five-year inquiry on Monday into how 30,000 people were infected with HIV and hepatitis, more than 3,000 of whom have died, after being given contaminated blood products to treat illnesses.
The long-awaited report revealed the health service and government led a “chilling” cover-up of the worst treatment disaster in NHS history.
Mr Sunak vowed to ensure “comprehensive compensation” was paid “whatever it costs” and that ministers would set out in detail imminently how they would address the inquiry’s recommendations.

Very true, but how, as those in power who were complicit and consented to this repugnant act, as the same who ensure there is no mechanism in place to hold them accountable.
It is time we the public revolt, as did France in the 18th century.

Will those in power face consequences for their criminal actions?

those responsible, more than 40 years ago, are probably dead. Unfortunately, much of the problems that caused the introduction of contaminated blood products were due to the transition to private funding and the "bungs" made by American corporations that supplied them!

In addition, the PO enquiry has the same indemnity, in that under the enquiries act, enquiries have no statute powers to recommend prosecutions, why, because if they did, then that would expose MP's, Ministers, and public servants to being accountable.
Fascism to protect powers trumps democracy.

I hope the compensation to all those families who have lost loved ones are paid billions in contribution. There is no excuse and government coverup apology is just another way of detracting from the truth, Government were totally corrupt as they are today and will inevitably attempt to pay minimum contribution. Such a disgrace and there should be criminal charges brought against all those involved.
