MOODY BLUES - NIGHTS IN WHITE SATIN (LIVE) fantastic !!! And Live !!! There is just one teeny weeny little detail and why you need to hear the original version the way we heard it on the radio when it came out. The Poem ..."Late Lament ''.. is missing in live versions and you also have to be sure it is included in the studio versions. In the concerts, they do the poem at the beginning of the concert. ...The Moody Blues - Nights In White Satin/Late Lament (Original 1967 LP Version) HQ

Dagmar listed a bunch of GREATS !!! But Here is a tip that not many know. The Moody Blues gets way MOODIER then what you just heard. ... Procession & The Story in Your Eyes - The Moody Blues ...Procession is a great lead-in to... The Story In Your Eyes.... The Moody Blues were also known for sounds of nature like rain, wind, and bird calls. Procession has all of that and more. I was told to listen to them together way back then and others agree. That is why you will find them listed together.

The finale of a concept lp (in 1967, Blessing!) that, like PinkFloyd, is only fully appreciable by listening to the whole album.

Coming up on 57 years since Justin Hayward (then only a teenager) wrote this, it remains ageless. Much of the original personnel have now left us, but the singer and his songs remain.

"Nights In White Satin" is their most famous song. Moody Blues are one of my favorite groups from the 60's-80's. Love their mix of rock with classical music. Lots of great songs such as "Go Now", "Tuesday Afternoon", "The Story In Your Eyes", "Question", "Ride My See-Saw", "I'm Just a Singer (In a Rock and Roll Band)", "Gemini Dream", "The Voice" etc. All of their music is great! Many of their records are concept albums & meant to be listened to all at once. Sadly Ray Thomas their flute player & singer passed away in 2018 & their drummer Graeme Edge passed away in 2021.

A band with one of the most unique sounds ever.
Apparently, this was written by singer Justin Hayward for a young woman with whom he shared strong feelings.
At one point, she gave him some white satin sheets as a gift, but because the band toured so much he didn't feel like he could have a real relationship with her.
He calls the song an "adoration of women."

Nights in White Satin has been one of my favorite songs since I first heard it in 1967, and I consider The Moody Blues one of my all time favorite bands. The Moody Blues were great in so many ways. They were the first rock band to use a full orchestra on several of their recordings, they played a large variety of instruments themselves, were the pioneers of progressive rock, and in many ways ahead of their time. Like Pink Floyd they had many concept albums with fabulous lyrics, great harmonies, vocals and instrumentation. I'm very glad you did a reaction on this song, and I enjoyed it immensely. You have such a talent for capturing feelings people have while listening to music, and expressing it in words. If you do more Moody Blues reactions, I would recommend starting with Tuesday Afternoon.

I believe the girls before the song started were saying the singers first name "Justin" Hayward. Released in November of 1967. It marked the beginning of the bands second incarnation with Hayward taking over as lead vocalist (with the departure of former lead sing Denny Laine- who went on to collaborate with Paul McCartney and Wings in 1971) and John Lodge on bass. The band would have several big hirs over the next 20 years. But this is the bands most legendary song. Take care Blessing, RNB

Such a delightful reaction from you, dear Blessing! 😁
Welcome to The Moody Blues. They are a British group that soared into global prominence in 1967, and lasted until about 5 years ago, when the drummer died leaving just two surviving members.
They have always been one of my very favorite bands. They all can write songs, but those by lead guitarist and, in this case, lead vocalist Justin Hayward have always been my favorites.
Justin has explained that the title came from a set of white satin sheets that a ladyfriend had gifted him.
You can go so many ways down this rabbit hole. I would suggest Hayward compositions, "Never Comes the Day," or "Question."

Justin the lead singer wrote the song as the climax of the album Days Of Future Past in 1 day. His girl frind at the time had jus broken up with him. As a parting gift she gave him a set of white satin sheets. Hence the title. As for the album released in 67 Is a must listen. Is it a day or is it a life? Sure it starts slowly and builds to this climax. This concert at the Royal Albert Hall is the most reviewed. It is a better orchestra than the one in the album in a better setting. And the group is more polished after 24 years. The album tells the whole sory.

Yes this song is beautiful but it is also one of the most gut wrenching sadest songs ever, damn it all to hell. Every time I hear it I cry and think where is she what is she doing. "Gazing at people some hand in hand" seeing others in love just brings back the pain. "Nights in White Satin" were reference to gift sheets she bought him just before she dumped him. "Letters I have written never meaning to send " with 20 versions in the trash he never mails her to try and win her back, why? "Just what the truth is I don't know anymore".
