    Modern horses are actually much less aggressive than horses throughout most of history. I’m not sure about the 17th century, but the 16th century and earlier, war horses were explicitly bread and chosen for it. It often caused problems in the stables since the horses would bite, and only really allow their owner to ride them.

      I would speculate that French Gendarme during the first years of the 16th century were the pinnacle of heavy cavalry in a medieval context. Huge heavy horses clad in armour having fully armoured high experienced riders attacking Swiss pike formations head on. Those horses would eat these from the video for breakfast.

      the main difference was more chance of being taken prisoner if i surrender(at least iam not irish or catholic). there were more atrocities and massacres in the thirty years war.

    If you like to see a scene from the movie "Alatriste" (2006 Viggo Mortensen) there you can find a scene with blocks of musketeers inside pikemen attacked by cuirasiers... One of the most impressive battlescenes I've ever seen. It's all about Diego Alatriste, a Spanish career officer in the 80 years war. Viggo Mortensen is very, very convincing. Also the locations are real historical ( a scene filmed at El Escorial, Phillps II palace near Madrid - I've been there, and there it was, in that movie!)

      I got taught that the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, The Revolutionary War and American Civil War were all interlinked. All three wars could be classed as British Civl Wars as the vast majority of the combatants had heritage from the British Isles. All three conflicts were fought over governance, rights and balance of power. The American Civil War was fuelled by unresolved issues from the American Revolution and the Revolution was fuelled by unresolved issues from the Wars of the Three Kingdoms. The American revolutionaries were heavily influenced by Cromwell and his followers. The religious conflict carried over to 18th century colonial America too.

    "No uniforms in the English Civil War" - huh? That's wildly inaccurate; Not all were uniformed, but during the later part, many regiments were. Rupert's Blewcoats, and the King's Lifeguard come to mind.

    The host's last comment rings so true. It was also stated in an Osprey Publishing Book on the English Civil War. The war affected the lives of possibly millions of people throughout England and Wales, at a time when the total population was thought to be around 4 to 5 million. Hundreds of thousands may have witnessed or being part of the many battles and skirmishes that took place. But literacy was not widespread in England and Wales at that time and even if so, few would have wanted to write their experiences down, preferring instead to forget the war as fast as possible. So they died, taking their stories with them to the grave. How much more would have been known of the English Civil War had literacy been more widespread, or if journalism was as advanced as it is today with people researching, interviewing witnesses and participants, we'll never know.

    • @THECHEESELORD69
      @THECHEESELORD69 6 місяців тому

      I like how you talk about the war like it was a modern war, I mean you focus on the story’s and stuff and not just “X fought y for z and a people died” ect ect.

    Gentle men in war where also expected to use broadswords. Rapiers, although carried in war, wheren't as practical on the battlefield, and there are at least three fencing manuals of 17th century england, that deal with the use of the broadsword.

    The farmer replied;
    "They've been having a falling out then?"

    I grew up riding horses on my ranch, so I already know how to ride. I'm American, so I already know how to shoot, including black powder rifles and pistols, and fortunately for me, the English can speak English. I think I can survive it if I could get in a position of command like a sergeant or something. With my modern knowledge, I could pull some raiding tactics from the Confederate guerillas like Quantrill and Bloody Bill Anderson. If I couldn't get in a position of command, then I suppose it would suck but I think I could survive.
