Modern horses are actually much less aggressive than horses throughout most of history. I’m not sure about the 17th century, but the 16th century and earlier, war horses were explicitly bread and chosen for it. Great video. I think the English Civil War is overlooked considering its importance and scale. I am from Huntingdon where we have the Cromwell Museum (the school he went to) and The Falcon (pub) opposite, which may have been used as a headquarters by Cromwell during the war. They also have mango cider and a jukebox.
Prince Rupert is easily my favourite character in this war. He was young and spunky, yet a seasoned soldier and commander. I wonder what he could do if he had few hundreds of polish winged hussars or at least pancerni (very versalite medium armored polish cavalry) at his disposal. Would he be able to use them effectively - or he'd waste their potential for not having experience with polish way of warfare...
I believe a lot of the troops in the civil wars were Dragoons, which in those days were mounted infantry. They rode to the battlefield but fought on foot.
Thanks again for the excellent episode! Took me a few days to find the time to watch this with the attention it deserves. This one's easy one for me though since just with my allergies I think my chances surviving in any sort of cavalry are slim to none :D
I was wondering if any of these commanders would had any experience with the thoughts of Gustavus Adolphus and I was correct. What a man he was! Awesome video, congratulations for your work!
yes alexander Alexander Leslie the earl of leven served with Gustavus Adolfus, so did david leslie the 1st lord newark and William Baillie. mind you most of the scottish commanders had seen action during the thirty years wars. which is why during the bishops war the scots had and an army and the english were barley trained militia.
@@poil8351 I didn't know that. Thank you for the information. I assume that the Scots were fighting under French command during the thirty years war. Isn't that right?
I'm particularly here to gain an understanding of how to form pike infantry to counter cavalry. Real, live research through reenacting is such a useful resource!
"No uniforms in the English Civil War" - huh? That's wildly inaccurate; Not all were uniformed, but during the later part, many regiments were. Rupert's Blewcoats, and the King's Lifeguard come to mind.
The helmet may stop slashing to the face, and the 'Buff coat', may stop sword cuts, but neither will stop a decent thrust! Everyone loves a good thrust!
The host's last comment rings so true. It was also stated in an Osprey Publishing Book on the English Civil War. The war affected the lives of possibly millions of people throughout England and Wales, at a time when the total population was thought to be around 4 to 5 million. Hundreds of thousands may have witnessed or being part of the many battles and skirmishes that took place. But literacy was not widespread in England and Wales at that time and even if so, few would have wanted to write their experiences down, preferring instead to forget the war as fast as possible. So they died, taking their stories with them to the grave. How much more would have been known of the English Civil War had literacy been more widespread, or if journalism was as advanced as it is today with people researching, interviewing witnesses and participants, we'll never know.
I like how you talk about the war like it was a modern war, I mean you focus on the story’s and stuff and not just “X fought y for z and a people died” ect ect.
Gentle men in war where also expected to use broadswords. Rapiers, although carried in war, wheren't as practical on the battlefield, and there are at least three fencing manuals of 17th century england, that deal with the use of the broadsword.
There was one occasion where troops from one faction or another rode past a farm, and seeing the farmer, asked him; "Who do you support, the King or Parliament?" The farmer replied; "They've been having a falling out then?" 😂
5:59 that's a english style battlefield armor made for the King of Portugal Peter II, he wore it during the Portuguese Restauration War, it had some feathers on top.
Very interesting video, it is great to see reconstitution mixed with historical narrative and you do it wonderfully great! Thank you and congratulations
It's kind of simplistic to say that a broadsword is for wild hacking - it is in fact much more a weapon of war than th rapier, which is more of a personal defence weapon.
Very interesting, I wonder how this episode would have been if you had been able to train with both units just to compare and contrast them or had two people to spend time with each.
I grew up riding horses on my ranch, so I already know how to ride. I'm American, so I already know how to shoot, including black powder rifles and pistols, and fortunately for me, the English can speak English. I think I can survive it if I could get in a position of command like a sergeant or something. With my modern knowledge, I could pull some raiding tactics from the Confederate guerillas like Quantrill and Bloody Bill Anderson. If I couldn't get in a position of command, then I suppose it would suck but I think I could survive.

mind you most of the scottish commanders had seen action during the thirty years wars. which is why during the bishops war the scots had and an army and the english were barley trained militia.
also prince rupert had seen alot of conbat during the thirty years war.
@@poil8351 I didn't know that. Thank you for the information. I assume that the Scots were fighting under French command during the thirty years war. Isn't that right?
@@TeutonicEmperor1198 actually mostly under swedish command. though some did serve in the french and dutch armies as well.
@@poil8351I forgot that Scotland was a different country back then.
This channel is so underrated
I'm loving this channel, I would love to do this kind of thing, but I would also spend a few days in the wild surviving with the historical gear
Amazing content. Thank you for the commitment and originality.
This was a great episode, can't wait to see what you bring in the future, subscribed!
Your series is great! Any chance you might be willing to tackle any topics from the age of exploration or the colonial wars during the Victorian era?
I'm particularly here to gain an understanding of how to form pike infantry to counter cavalry. Real, live research through reenacting is such a useful resource!
Unfortunately we can’t put it to real use because.. well you know we don’t want to kill anyone.
@@THECHEESELORD69 My intentions are in the wonderful world of writing. :)
I was actually gonna suggest this but then this video dropped. Nice Channel.
What an excellent video! Love all these, please make more!
best one in the series so far!
Excellent video. Love this style.
I'd rather survive the English Civil War than the American
Bur if you Irishman?
@@user-io6hz6ro1z lol fair enough
Thanks for the time you spend to make these videos.👍
Another delight, keep up the hard work!
"No uniforms in the English Civil War" - huh? That's wildly inaccurate; Not all were uniformed, but during the later part, many regiments were. Rupert's Blewcoats, and the King's Lifeguard come to mind.
This very video contradicts its own claim. The re-enactment unit shown are very clearly uniformed in scarlet. Assuming that's accurate of course.
People get this wrong sometimes, no need to make a big deal out of it!
Another excellent video Louee will go far !
The helmet may stop slashing to the face, and the 'Buff coat', may stop sword cuts, but neither will stop a decent thrust! Everyone loves a good thrust!
Love your videos! Its fun to see how the quality and editing has improved.
Great vid, love this period of the ECW , fantastic insight and loved the reenactors'
This is such high quality content! Cudos my Sir!
Another awesome video, thanks
I would love to watch an English civil war film. Cromwell was good but a modern remake would be great.
No synthetic drugs for sure but you think this conflict didn't feature sex and sadistic violence? @anthroimperzia3927
@anthroimperzia3927 it’s also not from a big brand so even less people would watch. But it sounds like a good idea!
This is awesome! More cavalry videos please!
There was one occasion where troops from one faction or another rode past a farm, and seeing the farmer, asked him;
"Who do you support, the King or Parliament?"
The farmer replied;
"They've been having a falling out then?"
😂

I reenact as a french cuirassier of the first empire, and enjoyed this very much. Very informative.
5:59 that's a english style battlefield armor made for the King of Portugal Peter II, he wore it during the Portuguese Restauration War, it had some feathers on top.
the efforts to these video are amazing
Amazing content as always!
Very interesting. I'd be interested to see such comprehensive insight on the Border Reivers.
This is a nice change of perspective
This is really professionally done! Fantastic!
Thank you very much!
I subscribed because of your shorts. I watched this video because I watched all of the shorts.
25:47 thanks cromwell. now I have added a new insult to my life dictionary

Great Video !!
Windsor is definitely a big guy. He’s very beautiful!!
Great series!!!
Exllent produced documentary . I hope one day I will make one about mamluks
Awesome! Keep making videos!
It's kind of simplistic to say that a broadsword is for wild hacking - it is in fact much more a weapon of war than th rapier, which is more of a personal defence weapon.
He means in the hands of barely-trained troops, which is what he's talking about. Very little training given at this time.
@@skepticalbadgerI mean all you needed them to do is hold the pike and follow orders.
Excellent episode and channel!
Thanks!
Man I love your videos!
Nice video! Well done 🙌🏻
