I cant be arsed wi sockets gettin in the way. I remove the wires, wago em, tuck em back in the patress and throw a piece of card in the face of the patress. Takes 2 mins and saves loads of stress.
It is best with them off, there were about 8 sockets in there, I don't mind whipping them off, it's the putting em all back on again🤣
You the man Eric….. I’ve learned loads from you…. Many thanks for all your great videos. 👍👍👍👍
Cheers Eric. You nailed the job and the thoughts of a “vintage” tradesman. As a 63 year old carpenter who can’t get hold of a decent plasterer for realistic money I’m about to give speed skimming a go after watching this.
Why am I only just seeing this now Eric?
Absolutely first class, loved watching this mate, nice to see you on camera 👌
Cheers mate, my mind went blank an I couldn't remember your name.
It's quite stressful being live 🙈🤣
Old school all the way mate.👍
Lovely video - really liked the calm piano music - so much nicer than shouty rap !!
Fantastic video Eric. Nice to see you in action with trowel 😀😃
The Plastering Podcast is on tomorrow (friday) Live, 6.30am on Trowel Talk all the gang, including Kirk and Blaine, if you can make it
Great video Eric you’ve definitely convinced me never to use speedskim to lay on you would have done it in half the time with your trowel. Great to watch though. All the best.
Hi
I use the metal version of speed skim and I'm looking to get the 400mm Mirka blade to replace my 5 year old worn out non branded blade. The Mirka blade is much wider than others so holds more material, so check it out. I've been applying material with 600mm and 400mm stainless skim blades for years so great to see you doing it too. Definitely works. Good to switch application methods to avoid repetitive strain injuries.
Blade damage, too narrow to hold material puts me off the plastic when there is stainless version on the market.
I have a 1200mm blade as well but it is a bit too big.
Oh .Mirka and Graco make the wider depth blades.😊
Great work. Thanks for video. All the best
Nice video, ive plastered before using inly hawk and trowel. Need to do my ceilings, si going to invest in the these soeed skims including the metal bladed one. I know a lot if plasterers my father included is old school and insists on a trowel finish but the finish you got there is plenty good enough for me 👌
Thanks jayman 👍 yeah, I'm in my 60's so fairly old school myself, I've only been using speed skims for about 3 years because it makes my job easier, but I understand why quite a few older boys stick to traditional 😀
Great vid mate.......its about time you did some plastering on ere mind 🤣🤣🤣 got to say though I can't get on with that big ox trowel though and was at least twice as quick and neat with my little 13 inch.....so I sold it to my apprentice and now I got a comedy show at work watching him struggle with it 🤣🤣🤣
Great job Eric. I just can’t stand plastering around sockets, I just don’t understand why customers get them taken off. 😡😡
Thanks mate, I find most people don't, I should request it, when they do though, half the time there's so much wire it won't sit flat in the boxes 🤪
You still have it, Keep swinging the trowel for the Silver 🦊 Brigade
Hold it together with scrim/ Tank tape and cheeky Payer to Saint Bartholomew, he's saved me many a time's over stairs, apex of gables 😂🤣😂🤣
@joe I've taken the liberty of putting you in my Ask The Plasterer bar, hope that's OK with you Joe?
Great video Eric for novice home DIY.... Thanks😊
Q. What size metal speed skim did you use for polishing, is 900 too long? Only I have 900 plastic and don't what to fork out another 50quid for 600, I could just buy the metal blade then...
Thanks Paul👍900, it's the best size, I don't have a 600, though it's quite good for getting into smaller spaces, and I rarely use my 1200, so yeah, if your happy to keep swapping the blades over just buy a metal blade, depending if its much cheaper?
Great video m8, im a plasterer and also use extratime as it does take its toll on the body.
Cheers mate 👍 never used to use it, now I'm not happy if I haven't got some handy 😁
Question - how do you clean the dust off the walls before you plaster? I have to plaster over very dusty walls after construction finished.
You seal the wall 1st. It stops the dust and kills the suction. Use SBR neat or PVA, there are other methods which work better on different backgrounds.
Hi Eric just wanted to know can you get boardfinish fast set. I only plaster every now and again but I have used some board finish on a job and it says fast set on it I only noticed after the 3rd bag was not a slow day.
Hi Adam, I think the writing on the board finish is just an advert for fast set, fast set is gone in about an hour, board finish normally goes off quicker than multi. You can use Eazymix half time additive in it if you want it to go off quicker. Hope that helps
It’s the wet corners I don’t like dealing with when doing walls in one hit…. I suppose it’s easier when using that extra time stuff?
Wet corners go quite well as you can see in the vid if you don't hit them too soon, the Extra Time gave the plaster a longer workability but the set as a whole was still completed in 3 hours, which surprised even me 🌝you do need a good flexible internal trowel though
Nice job mate, I would have to have whipped those sockets off though
Cheers Nick, yeah, I'm thinking of telling my customers to take the sockets off and put the wires into the box if they want an even better job, and easier for me of course 😂
Excellent job mate. I’m only a DIYER but I’m getting more confident with plastering but never done 4 walls in one set as I’m not great at getting neat corners so tend to do opposite walls. what size flexi bucket did you use and what is the brand of corner trowel.
No real point in doing 4 walls in one go, just makes for a good video😁 and doing opposite walls is a very good technique for straight corners, went from a Marshaltown corner trowel to a Refina one as the curved edges dig in less 👍
I use the big flexi bucket from B&Q, they're about a tenner, great for mixing bonding or finish, 2 put together is a bit more rigid
I always wanted to learn how to do this but plastering in the States isn't a popular trade. We use use sheetrock 99.9 percent of the time.
Hi Dan, yeah mostly drywall over there, so even getting the products would be difficult, I've just had a try at venetian plastering, possibly more call for that over in the states, its not as difficult as it looks👍
Weird starting at the bottom. Notice no scrim over the chase 😢
I've always started from the bottom, you can start wherever you like and I rarely tape over chase
put that piece of shite away and get yoursel a Refina x-skim
Great vid Eric, how long did the set take with that extra time and did you water the second coat down at any stage? like when you plaster without extra time. Atb
Hi mate, the Extra Time gave me longer workability, but the set time in total was still only 3 hours, I had to add the 3rd bag into what was left of the original mix but with no extra time, and I left it quite thick. I found putting the second coat on with the plastic speed skim made the walls exceptionally flat 👍👌
Great answer Eric, I’ll give it a try. I’m one of the ‘older’ guys so anything to make life easier., save the joints etc. Take care mate, see you in the pub
I know I am late commenting but I love the idea of spreading with the speed skim.
I am 79 now and have agreed to plaster my daughter’s extension so anything to save the joints.😂
I haven’t plastered for many years but it’s like riding a bike, I am amazed that I can still do it.
Thank you for your video, it has inspired me to carry on.
@RayWilliams-ui7gw Hi Ray, thanks for that mate, it's good to know you can still do it at 79 coz I won't be retiring till at least then😂keep it up mate, let me know how the job goes 👍💪 Happy New Year! Eric
Blimey Eric must have been a drag sheeting the floor, did the customer insist on it, are they keep a wooden floor or something!
I always sheet the floor Steve, even if it's just floorboards as I can't be bothered to do any scraping at the end 😅
Great video Eric. I was starting to get tired watching the chest cam footage! Ive never seen a speed skim used to lay on before but the room looked fantastic when finished. Very nice job. Thank you.
Thanks Paul, I was amazed how flat it looked myself, never tried it before. As long as the chest cam didn't give you motion sickness 😆👍🍻what I wouldn't give for a camera man😃
