From Dolly Parton -- who wrote and recorded the song in Nashville -- to Whitney Houston -- who covered it and brought into popular music -- to Sohyang -- performing aboard a freighter ship in South Korea -- this is a stunningly beautiful and passionate song that requires the absolute best from a singer. Fortunately for us, Sohyang has one of the best voices on the planet.
Thanks for your wonderful reaction to this vocal master. It was so cool to see Henry, Lee Hi, and Suhyun all in amazement of So Hyang's free styling what is the saxophone solo in the original, for they are all virtuoso musicians in their own right...
Hi Cait. Well, Sohyang shows us what perfection sounds like, again. Every single note like a crystal bell. The original composition has a Saxophone solo midway through the song. Did you notice that she SANG it? Cheers.
Most don’t realize that ad lib part in the middle was where the sax solo was, and those other singers were in awe of her just making it up as she went along and stayed on key.
Producers: "What song are you going to perform for our first episod?" So Hyang: "I've always wanted to do IWALY" Producers: "We told you the accompaniment is limited, there's no one to play the Sax solo." So Hyang: "Hold my (non-alcoholic) beer please."
This was sohyang’s first day as part of the ‘begin again Korea’ team. She only joined because they usually have a token elder in this group of younger Korean stars of the Korean music scene & the regular member was unable to make it so Sohyang stepped in. You are right, that is Henry & when the rest of the group were asked what it was like having Sohyang sing with them, Henry simply said ‘ some people are just born to sing’. The girls in the group were starstruck & were big admirers of Sohyang & you could tell that yes, they were very excited but also so respectful too. I don’t think there is 1 video in this whole series where the camera has panned across the other singers when Sohyang was singing & they have not been either on awe of her vocals or on tears, you have to remember that all of them are pop stars in their own right. Those that sang duets were just so happy that they got to sing with the ‘queen’. One of them said that watching Sohyang sing at close quarters was like having a living textbook with them. Even though they at all very good singers themselves they were just blown away by her vocal skills. You should check out all her performances ( I mean the covers of songs you are already familiar with or you’ll be there a long long time) as they are some of the most recent Sohyang performances available to us as they were filmed during the height of the pandemic. Other performances of note ( they are all ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ but a few you should check out first): Mariah Carey’s ‘I’ll be there’ Jason Mraz’s ‘ I won’t give up’ (kleenex alert!) Alicia Keys ‘if I ain’t got you’ Beiber/Grande ‘stuck with you’ (a duet with Crush) Ella Fitzgerald’s ‘Misty’ ( my personal fav, once again proving that she excels in all genre’s) and many others which I can recommend later but there is one song that again backs up this feeling that she do anything, it is a mainly Korean song with little bits of English thrown in, and that is the song ‘day day’. Why this song? well, I bet you never asked yourself ‘I wonder if she can rap’ as she seems able to do all other forms of vocals. This video will answer that question. I saw the rehearsals for this song & the ‘youngsters’ were really struggling getting the words out fast for the rap, not Sohyang & in the live performance I find it really astonishing that the ‘elder’ among this group of ‘current Korean pop stars’ is the one that ends up doing the bulk of the rap when it came to showtime!! Actually, on this very same show she did actually do a very playful duet with Henry of the song ‘let’s Marvin Gaye’ ( not sure if that’s the actual title but I’m sure you know the song I’m referring to). I’m sure you know by now that Sohyang never lets you down when it comes to performing so happy viewing
