  • Guy is homeless in Venice Beach, California. He is a professional musician. After being evicted, Guy jumped on a train and headed to Los Angeles.
Lots of people relocate to Southern California for many different reasons. Some are seeking fame and fortune. I was one of those who headed west way back in 1987 when I relocated from Upstate New York. I too ended up on the streets!
The population of Los Angeles has a lot of people moving in and out but the research shows that 65 percent of those on the streets have lived here for 20 or more years, whereas about 10 percent have been here less than a year.
Guy does receive disability income but it's not enough to afford rent. I know many of you will comment that he should move to someplace where it doesn't cost so much to live. Well, that's easy to think and harder to do. First, a homeless person would have to get first months rent and security deposit. If they have bad credit or an eviction, that also makes it hard to rent a place. Plus, there really is no perfect place to live. Where there is cheaper rent, there often are only low paying jobs, if you can get a job.
But Guy's biggest challenge is he doesn't have identification. Without ID, you can't do anything anymore. Guy shares about the bureaucracy he faces trying to get a new ID.
Guy is a gentle and kind man. Even if he wasn't disabled, at 61 there is little chance an employer will hire him. We need to help people like Guy get out of homelessness.

    About Invisible People:
Since its launch in November 2008, Invisible People has leveraged the power of video and the massive reach of social media to share the compelling, gritty, and unfiltered stories of homeless people from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, they’re on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as UA-cam, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.
Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can’t ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation’s most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America’s homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.

I was homeless in LA for 7 years. I'm back East now, and I'm just a hair's breath away from being right back out there. I will be trying to recover from homelessness for the rest of my life... even if I'm fortunate enough to make good money, have a home of my own, and find "success". I spent many days and nights in Santa Monica, and on Venice Beach. I sat right where this man is sitting many times. The only thing the police care about is if you're alive or dead because they don't want to deal with any dead bodies. Other than that. They don't care. And of course all the people walking by, enjoying their day, living a life... don't even see you. Please, please, please do not judge this man. It doesn't matter if a homeless person is a drug addict, mentally ill, an alcoholic, or not. They didn't start out in life thinking they wanted to be any of those things, just like nobody wants to get cancer. So please think before you judge or comment about the homeless. I beg you. God bless us all.

@Joey May Hi Joey, there is no ad on this video or any of the interview videos. No red cent has been made. In total, we receive around $200 each month and that goes to cover captioning costs. That said, I spend almost every waking moment working to help homeless people. Tens of thousands of homeless people have been helped directly and indirectly because of our work. I am unemployed without income. I make zero money off of this channel. As cool as you may think that is, me not being able to work full time on this limits our ability to help more people.

I work where I come in contact with a lot of homeless people. This gentleman seems out if the ordinary to me because he doesn't have a huge sense of entitlement or a defiant attitude, which is pretty common with the homeless I see. It is true that just about anyone can become homeless, but I think what we have to pay attention to, in order to help some of these people, is that they just can't live with others amicably. Otherwise, I think they would find people who help them by offering them a spare room. When some finally understand that they need to be respectful of others and live by others rules if they are in their home, voila, a room or space appears. Just my opinion.

Today I did my first giving socks day in São Vicente, Brazil and when I got out of them (I only had 12 pairs with me), I got into a drugstore and bought some toothbrushes, dental cream and soap. I saw a video of yours where a young guy said he wanted these things, so I decided to give these things and it was great. Sadly, all of th people I met were women with children and an elderly lady. I’ve been for “coincidence” watching some of your interviews and yes, you are right they almost pass as invisible... For me, really looking at them, changed all my perception, things are really hard for them and there are amazing people out there. Now I understand why some time ago I heard about a woman that married one of these guys, they are like everyone else but with a great lesson to share, like the guy here. THANK YOU for lending us these glasses 🤓

Guy, I remember when we first met. I remember I arrived a few days after you but we became good friends, a little bit thanks to Jessie and my sunburn. Lots of good laughs together. I totally remember the sleepwalking incident when the cops drove you from Rose to the spot. haha. He's absolutely awesome on his guitar btw.. I'll swing by in the next few days and we'll talk about your New project.

Hi !! Oh I really love his personality !! I Pray for permanent homes for each and every one of them ❣️ and great health and prosperity ❣️❣️ I really appreciate you for what you do to help people !!! Can you mention subsidized housing to all of them especially the elderly disabled and the veterans ?!! 30% of their income is all they would pay !! Usually only lights or no utilities is when in most subsidized housing ❣️❣️❣️ Great Blessings to us all ❣️❣️❣️👍🏾

He can go to Salvation Army & get his name on the list for a bed. There's a waiting list but it's first come first serve if you're not there when they call your name, so the list moves pretty fast. Then he should go to Catholic charities, St. Vincent de Paul is very helpful with a variety of different things so they probably have I.D. vouchers. They have gas vouchers & food vouchers. Praying 🙏 for this man! He has such kind eyes, and I'm a big fan of the Ten Commandments myself💞🙏

The disability is always vague because it's typically just general depression and lack of motivation. I mean, c'mon, the guy is 61, of course he probably has some problems. That's called aging and he isn't special in that regard. I just posted a comment about a lawyer I know who's a paraplegic with Parkinson's--he conducts depositions, attends court, and everything any other lawyer would do. He's more disabled than 90% of people on disability. Most people on disability are physically able-bodied, they're just lazy and/or depressed with no motivation, and they just get worse on disability.

How many of you sleepwalk? Have ever woke up somewhere you did not fall asleep? Have you ever woken up without your blanket and then had to hunt to find it? And then finding blanket outside? Have you ever slept only 10 hrs in 2 months? This is serious stuff. It effects the brain. The brain functions every part of the body. I don't wish it on anybody.

You should make a video on the homeless people using the bus on the 24 hour owl line. The 20 line is pretty bad especially around 3 am when the trains stop working for about a hour so all homeless people are on that bus or the 4 line also is pretty crazy. The bus line becomes a shelter for homeless people.

H e is so right..a lack of decent mental healthcare, addressing trauma is essential in helping people back into housing plus there needs to be the affordable housing there for them in the first place. But as far as being able to sustain your housing once you have it and hold down a job etc then decent mental healthcare is essential.

Well, having been in the Great Plains and being from Santa Monica, I think he made a good move to get away from the bitter cold in Montana. It used to be so cold in So. Dakota that the frost would pull out the nails in your walls with a bang sound. There are southern states where cost of living is cheaper. So LA is actually just a stop on the way to living warmer. You feel the cold a lot more when you get older, so that's why snowbirds (elderly) move to Florida, etc.
