This song is so moving. In a lot of ways it's very Dylan-esque. It reminds me of songs such as "Stuck Inside of Mobile..." and "Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands". Like those songs the structure is simple, repetitive (In the song Savage himself sings "kept repeating, kept repeating myself"), and subdued to the point where it shifts the music away from the forefront, and disappears into the background. But it's the lyrics in this track that makes it shine. Lines like "It seems that you’ve got a spotlight cast on the dark side of me" are very reminiscent of Dylan, but not even in a derivative way. One of the most enjoyable and interesting aspects of Bob Dylan's songwriting was his ability to take classic song structures and lyrical themes and alter them to fit his own perceptions of the world. Kind of like breaking someone's nose and then telling them they look better that way. Parquet Courts are able to channel this without creating a bland imitation of it (a practice which many critics are too hasty to accuse them of), and this - to me - is the one of the most appealing parts of their music. They have proven that - unlike many bands, who simply seem to copy elements of influential music of days gone by to fit their own hazy and unreliable nostalgic memories - the past does have a place in the music of today; and that taking cues from it is not always a bad thing. Or maybe I'm wrong, idk. I'm no critic, man.
I don't get this band.. they seem all gimmick and nyc cool and not much substance.. even this classic 90s sounding riff/track, the most accessible thing they've done to date, does not warrant to be dragged out for 7 minutes.. shows how excited they are over it.. haha
The substance is in the lyrics. And the lyrics redeem all. There was nothing at all behind some of the Velvets best tracks. I don't think the comparison is entirely out of place. But these guys will need to knock out another four solid records with songs this good to even come close to delivering on that.
also the EVEN if the idea were true that they are 'just ny cool- gimmick what do you WANT total originality?
