- We have here a demo of a 66 Princeton Reverb and a 66 Deluxe Revervb. Guitars used are Gibson ES335 with Cream T 59 pickups and a self-built strat with Fender CS69 pickups.

Deluxe hands down
I like the sizzle and quickness to the princeton ever so slightly more than the deluxe. Excellent chops and tone
The 10" speaker has quicker response maybe? If the Deluxe Reverb had a 10" speaker of the right kind - larger magnet and voice coil, it might sound even better than with a 12" speaker - tighter bass, quicker response, more "sizzle and quickness"...?
Really great sounds out of both. You can hear that the Deluxe has a more scooped sound with overdrive than the Princeton. The basic slightly driver sounds on both are superb.
Princeton for sure. That’s why I own one . When I need more volume I’ll skip the Deluxe entirely and get a Vibrolux.
Oh man, yes they sound great but those grill cloths are gorgeous.
nice comparison. thanks for posting. i love them both.
What year is the vibrolux reverb? I just picked up a late 65 and I'm really loving it. Awesome stuff
I liked my DR so much more, I sold my two PR's - wish I'd kept one (dummy!). The bigger cabinet and slightly better reverb (if not tremolo) made me like the DR more. IF I'd had the right speaker in the PR (C10N, Weber 10F150), THEN I might have liked the PR more. But even with a 12" speaker, the smaller cabinet will never sound as big. I do prefer the 10" speakers, when they are the right types for the amps. I'm thinking of getting a baffle for my DR cut for 2x10" speakers, then I could use two different types of speakers, or just one at a time...? Probably want to use both though. Cheers!
EDIT: I realized one variable that is important to consider. The microphones recording the amps are right in front of the speakers, so you don't hear what the cabinets do to the sound. The larger cabinet of the DR makes a positive difference to my ears.
That Princeton is noice!!
are you using a delay pedal or just reverb, vibrato and palm heel damping of the strings? Love that sound. Might sell my '74 SG and get one of these ES335s. Les Pauls are amazing too but I doubt they will have this tone, and I would play every day and not just when the guys want to rock out. What model ES335 is it please?
As for shootouts I think you ought to use the same speakers. Also, to run the risk of a bit of constructive critique, you sound amazing on Gibson but not on Strat, or are not nailing the Strat sound I don't think, sorry. ( I know it's only a demo too though lol)
Thank you
"not nailing the Strat sound"...wtf?! I thought he nailed it pretty good myself.
I can't really tell if the amps are clipping poorly or if they are actually clipping my speakers...
Sounds nice. Did you add a midrange pot to the deluxe?
pricenton sound better with Gibson and deluxe sound better with strat
Warts and all, I think the Princeton Reverb is the best of the blackface amps.
Where are you located? I am intersted in buying or having a few amps done and you are the man! Do you have a website or email info we can talk? Thanks- Mike
Both sound great ..unrelated...in general, will pulling the V1 from a DRRI reduce the hiss produced?
Jeremy James If you had the volume set to zero on normal channel, no. It may actually worsen the hiss on vibrato channel because of increased gain.
fenderguru.com youtube Oh right. That makes sense. I didn’t notice it myself though. Can I ask which tube in your experience contributes most of the hiss? And any recommended tubes that might help lessen idle noise? Thanks again.
@@JeremyJames_studio I know this is a reply to an old post but, the 100k ohm plate load resistors are the most likely suspect.
@@gimmeeinboxback3860 Many thanks
Is that the theme song to True Blood? lol. Sounds great.
Goes to show everything sounds different.
Princeton all the way!
Hey guru... How's it going pal?
I wanna do bad things with you. Yeah you...Princeton Reverb! :D
Princeton feels a little more focused to me.
I don't really like the sound of 12 inch speakers so the princeton to me wins
And the speakers in each amp are?
Duncan Plexico jensen c10n in the Princeton. oxford 12 in the deluxe.
Great - many thanks! Your posts and site are terrific!
@@jensmo75 UA-cam hi bro, i got a 1969 sf deluxe reverb with 6l6 and original Oxford speaker my cuestión its about tube rectifier, which I should use 5u4g or gz34 ? Originally came with 5u4g and 6v6, should I have to change to gz34 ? Since I change to 6l6. Thanks bro
Benjamin Alvarez you can use both, but I recommend the gz34 because of higher plate voltage and a bit more headroom and less sag. Blackface deluxe had gz34 and silverfaces had 5u4gb, by the way.
youtube thanku bro, I will follow your advice.👍
You guys have the finest gear on earth but the quality of the demos is just stupid. The audio is clipping in almost every video and the compressiion sounds like it’s done by a child.
