- Savage - Featuring Ray Gillen - 1981 - This video was recorded for the "Captain Mels Variety Show" which was a local cable tv show in the New York Tri state area. The drummer here is Donald Siudmak, who went on to found the band Platinum. Platinum is still together and making new music on Heaven And Hell Records.
The guitarist Marco Castelluccio is the brother of HBO Sopranos character Furio aka Federico Castelluccio.
Ray Gillen was 24 in this video. Savage then became Vendetta, and then Ray left to join Rondinelli, then on to Black Sabbath, and then formed Badlands with Jake E. Lee.

1. heaven and hell (black sabbath)
2. another piece of meat (scorpions)
3. rock n roll (led zeppelin)
JUST AWESOME ! FANTASTIC !
🤩🤩🤩
I love how Ray sings to the sky. He is like a bird reaching for his voice
bck then he didnt know to keep his head down and relax his neck, throat muscles..
Lemmy also sang up with his microphone pointed down.
when we were younger, the videos of the 50's and 60's looked old and not today, looking back at our hayday, again, it looks old as shit..lol but we were there!!!! how lucky are we..
You can thank me for this people. I got this from Ray's mom after he died and traded it out a few times in the late 90's/early 2000's.
+Kevin Richards Rock the Stage NYC when can we see your version?? looking forward to it..thank you.
tink ie
its on an old S-VHS tape. I don't have a way to convert it to digital.
+Kevin Richards Rock the Stage NYC thank you!
If you send a copy to Russia we will easily convert the tape)) seriously!
By the way. Is Ray's mom alive?
maria kor
I don't know if Ray's mom is still alive. I got this from here sometime in the late 1990s.
She is. She's on the Ray Gillen Facebook page, Armida Amy Gillen. I wonder is she's of Latin descent, and if Ray had some Native American blood in him. He certainly looks like he might have both, and "Sun Red Sun," seems to have Native American themes and imagery it. Ray commented in an interview that his song lyrics were "very personal."
Hi Everyone, I have the digital copy of this video I was the bass player- I will post it soon. To the few people that criticize the video about sound quality are complete assholes knowing where this was filmed -I grew up with Ray and he went on to do much better things obviously but we can take a look back at some of the things he did a 22 years old that makes this video special. What made This video special he would sing the Beatles, and Judas Priest and Led ZeppelinAnd Van Halen -he had tremendous range and great stage presence that you can see at a young age. I have some other photos much better videos this was the beginning of SAVAGE-we went on to do much better things better songs all over New Jersey clubs like the hole in the wall, Soap factoryMothers in Wayne. At the time the clubs had Twisted Sister, TT quick, Molly hatchet, and Jessie bolt, and white tiger. Best time of my life enjoy the video and don’t be too worried about sound quality and delay in the guitar. This video is about Ray- rest in peace my brother!!
OH!!! PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE!!!! He is SOOOO beautiful and gorgeous here both visually and vocally!!!! Best vocalist Black Sabbath ever had!!!! Please get all of the videos released in all ways!!!!
How about that link????
So...where is this? Are YOU still alive?
Its very cool .
His voice got even better as it matured.
In 1985 ( Rondinelli ) his voice became mature .
This doesn’t do him justice, One of the best rock singers that ever lived .
Agree 100%
This is phenomenal.
wow this is old!! I have somewhat rediscovered Badlands and have become amazed at Ray's voice. Very sad circumstances surrounding his death. His voice on the 3 badlands discs were really perfection. RIP Ray
Mr. Paul Raymond Gillen Rip 🔥🎤💪👊🤘😎
Great Singer Criminally Uderrated 🔥🎤🤘👊😎
Mr. Raymond Arthur Gillen Rest In Peace 🎶🎼🎤😭🙏
Raw talent. Turned into one of the best rock voices ever.
I use to go see Ray all the time in the clubs in Jersey He was with Harlot at that time with George on drums and Ross on guitar from Lodi R.I.P. Ray
Little did he know when he did this, he'd eventually actually be in Sabbath for a minute
and his minute was the greatest with Eternal Idol sessions. One of the best !
Same with Dio, he was covering "War Pigs" back in his Elf days!
Ray Gillen was just amazing ❤
Drummer in this video is Donald Siudmak who left SAVAGE to join SSSTEELE then went on to found PLATINUM who's first Album was titled "ICEMAN" Rising Sun Records Hamburg Germany 1989.
Several tracks from ICEMAN on UA-cam.
Also on UA-cam is PLATINUM's Video from First EP Here To Fight from 1987. To see video search
PLATINUM-in the middle of the night 1987
That was fucking great 👍
Gold for the guy who shared it! Now it's the oldest known video with Ray available on UA-cam, I think. Thanks thanks thanks 🔥🔥🔥❤️
No kidding! This video alone shows and proves at least to me he was the best and my favorite Black Sabbath singer!
Rays wiki page should be updated it’s lists his stint with Savatage when it was Savage the Band is with here.
Black✟✝️✞Sabbath with Ray Gillan is priceless!
It states that Ray Glllen was 24 in this video, however he was born on May 12, 1959, so he was 23, maybe even 22 if this was recorded before May 12, 1982. Nonetheless, at 22, 23, or 24, Ray had the power in his voice, & was a perfect fit when he replaced Glenn Hughes on the spot back in 1986. Three years later, he completely rocked on the debut Badlands album! His passing & the terrible circumstances surrounding his death in December 1993 hit me pretty hard at the time. I was so lucky to have seen him live three times, once with Sabbath in 1986 & twice with Badlands in 1989 & 1991. He kicked major ass at each show & I consider him one of my all time favourite vocalists. Of course, Ronnie James Dio is tops on my list!
Ray was a great singer had he lived i have no doubt that he would have been considered in the top 10 rock voices of all time.
How sad to contract aids so young.
Ray was awesome even here. Such exceptional talent. Thank you very much !!!!
Where does the time go. It seems like yesterday when we were running through the fields.
I'm so glad this video is available . I've watched up to a thousand times 😃
I wish that videos that a lot of people probably have somewhere in the attics will finally appear on the Internet...
He's known for his high loud powerhouse range, but I actually prefer when he sings more bluesy .
like he did on Badlands Dusk. Same with David Covrrdale.
He had unbelievable beautiful low notes. Noone sings like him , and noone will. So I agree with you ☺️
@@Glory7RedemptionPrincess His high tones got much better too by the time he was in Sabbath and Badlands
Ray Gillen- amazing
Dante Brando on the bass..two words...Oh, yeah!
Ray Gillen fuck'n singer, RIP Ray!!!
this is absolutely precious!! big thanks for sharing
Wonderful!
Thanks for sharing this Kevin Richards! This is a gem.. And so was Ray! Thanks !
This is absolutely brilliant stuff! I've been a Ray Gillen fan for years but I'd never come across anything he did before Rondinelli and that makes this video a real treat.Thank you very much for posting it! Ray was one of the most talented singers of all time and certainty one of the best of his generation and videos/music like this only reinforce those facts. Awesome footage! Thanks again & R.I.P. Ray.
He's gorgeous!
Was going to comment myself but you took every thought I had about this and put it down perfectly... thanks! 🤘
ALL I CAN SAY IS AWESOME AND AMAZING . THANKS FOR SHARING THIS❤❤❤❤❤❤
thank you rays mom ,and most of all thank you ,for sharing this with us,just love it!!
Ray definitely went on to improved greatly as a singer....and his hair did too
yes, this is shit compared to his work with Sabbath later on the remastered Eternal Idol album this is hard to listen to .
he probably took singing lessons to improve tone, yes this shit compare to later on in his career, gone too soon.
Bullshit!!! This is phenomenal and proves he was the best vocalist Black Sabbath ever had!!!
I think he sings pretty good here. Of course, he did improve but he had the goods to start with.
Wow this is so rare. Thank you for posting. Savatage was bad ass RiP Former lead men. God bless Dave Herman the LD for after dark shows. Real rock.
Thank you!!
He definitely got much better as a singer.
Kick ass. Thanks for this bro!
As cool as it is seeing Ray sing a Sabbath tune here in 82’, his voice was much more suited to RNR by Zep then. He crushed that cover! Damn good band too. RIP Ray ..
He was gorgeous!
Yeah, except he did sing for Black Sabbath also: ua-cam.com/video/GH3prrkO_L8/v-deo.html
@@michaelkeudel8770 Indeed. His vocals were wiped clean from the tapes but he toured with them in about 86-87’. Wish I could have seen that tour.
@@tonysimmons5729 well his vocals weren't on the original 1st release, but the demo's were released officially a couple of years ago. Still waiting to hear the Born Again remaster now that Iommi finally found the original Masters to mix from.

Many thanks from France RST.
This was before his range opened up! As he was with me! I knew he has what it took! RIP!
Goddammit could that man sing.
FULLY BLITZING! I wish Ray were still around.
Well Thank you!
thanks a lot.
I closed my eyes and I thought was badlands pre- sessions.... the same voice since he was young...
I think then he was like a young bird , his voice developed to sky-high dimensions. What a gem !! So unique . I love Ray
Donald is one hell of a drummer !
Nice upload.
my brother singing my daddys song....ty
+Krankshaw88 Both are cute!
This was his band that played la mores! This was before his range opened up and before people were using the drop d! He was my pal. Parents were great folks!
Shame he went to young. I have tapes but I’ve Gota dig them up but I’ve gotten!
Holy! best Heaven and Hell cover I've ever heard!
Jack Black once did a good acoustic snippet
After of Dio, this version of Gillen is the best.
Спасибо!!! Он и знать не знал тогда, что петь в любимой группе будет)))
el mejor...!!!!!!!!!!
SENSACIONAL! \o/
love you ray
So sad amazing voice gone in a decade

Awesome rip ray chester. And chris cornell
Heaven&Hell, it’sJUST for RONNIE😁🤘I’m like Ray, but no proud this song🤤Ronnie it’s ALRIGHT, ALRIGHT‼️Ray also 👦 boy...after this voice great🙌it’s so young, Voice it’s....🙈After, yes, yes RAY💕💋
❤
Happy birthday Ray 🔥❤🤘
wow, what a gem. ray's full vocal power and looks not quite there yet, the b part of the sabbath song was really good. and no problem belting out robert plant.
Ray's voice is so light, "Heaven and hell" sounds so highly although the tune is the same as in the original.
He had a good voice
The second song is "Another Piece of Meat," by the Scorpions, which I had never heard them sing before. It seems more metal than what the Scorpions would do, more like Black Sabbath. Ah, the good ol' days!
Un dels millors.
Cliffside Park's own
Awesome! If this is indeed 1982, Ray was merely 21 years old.....An amazing talent who left us way to early.....RIP RAY...........
MetalheadYA
If this was 1982, he'd be 23
He was born in 1959.
A girl I dated back in 1990 played me a 45 of a band that her dad played drums in back in the late 70s. Ray was the singer, band was called F66, if I am not mistaken.

Platinum- In the middle of the night
Rays killer.

wow nobody would even try these tunes back then
All these guys are amazing! Ray was very good here, but you can hear in Black Sabbath and Badlands how much he evolved as a singer. In Black Sabbath, he was singing in an almost "rock opera" style, and yet it was very effective, and not overblown, the way so many 80's rock singers sounded.
thanks yeah i seen all the bands live back then i bounced in the biggest metal club in my area
Was Savage just a cover band ?
Ray was born in 1959 and in 1981 he was 22,Not 24.
Ray is very young and very raw here great stuff.
🤘🎚️🔉🪔✝️🕊️🎆🌹💝
oops....my bad math....Ray was 23
Dan Brando is my uncle
Mean I’ve got the tspes
Correction needed. This is from 1981.
How do you know?
Was the drummer it was my band.
Oh your missing a band! Before he went to sabo we recorded several songs! I’ve got the tapes! HMU I will post a link!
Hey Jeff. Email me directly at dave@rockshowtrader.com - I'll be happy to post them to my channel, give you credit, and post any information you want in the video description. Thanks for reaching out!
@Jeff Miller Have you more with Ray ??? 😮
So, was it '81 or '82?, ... The video title say's '81 but the first thing the video itself says it's 1982 so who's lyin'?? lol
"Dude look like a...."
I'll have to post my version of this - much better quality and color. This looks washed out.
Where is it?!
He's been too busy taking credit for RockShowTrader's posting. Give him another 4 years maybe..? xD
...hmm. wondering if this was all a ruse to eventually get ray a try out with....
...Black Sabbath...
how old is Ray here?
23
6:56 first symptoms of his pending disease...
Why doesn’t the drummer play the hi-hats right ? Sorry. That stuff just bugs me.
Just another hair band
Way too much delay in the guitar sound.
The beginning of Ray finding his voice. Very raw indeed. Certain missed things here and the drummers timing and overall knowledge of the song is not great. Sorry, I just had to say it. Anyways ive sucked worse. HAHAHA.
He can sing but not like Dio, and this song only fit Dio.
OMG!! Ray is Sooo Badd Ass!! kinda sad musicians though. i don't know who's worse that sloppy off beat drummer, or that completely off key Bass Player. Ray was a million times more advanced a musician than these Jokers!! RIP Ray!! You Ruled!
+james denal just rude...,they were just starting out and its nice to see them all young and how it began....
A garrage video of you and your band during 80s would be wellcome, lets see the basis of such haughty insight.
Absolutely correct, the basis of this video is to show Ray at a young age. I was the bass player and enjoyed playing with Ray. Wasn't the greatest quality but they were great musicians. Always a jerk like this making comments that accomplished nothing
what a douche bag reply
What do you play, the radio?
Was ray gay
ask the women he infected across the US and abroad
According to a recent Jake E. Lee interview, Ray told him he had once shot up heroin with his uncle, a biker who was also gay. That's how Jake believes Ray became HIV Positive, although Ray never admitted he had it.
Northern Light. So sad. Ray had a great voice, stage presence, and looks.
Who cares
Absolutely not, chicks chased him all the time and he liked it too much ...
