I've been getting tired of Windows 10 but Windows 11 has pushed me over the edge, I am currently running Pop OS on my laptop but now looking at running Manjaro for a bit. Also for those reading this is it normal to move from distro to distro in the beginning of moving to Linux?
I am in the small position also Microsoft was pushing me since win8 and win10 was starting to really piss me off but then win11 I was that's it I am done with Microsoft Windows.
Regarding MS Teams - one of the last apps you discuss: it runs well, yet it lacks multiple features. For instance, you cannot share the video output of a specific Window (you can only share the entire desktop), you are limited to seeing a maximum of four Webcam outputs simultaneously, there is no together mode, and there is no support for blurred backgrounds. There are clear indications that Microsoft is purposely limiting the range of features available on Linux. To give an example: about a year ago, Microsoft temporarily enabled 3*3 grids for video chats, so you could see up to nine people at the same time, yet after one or two weeks the feature was disabled it again. Interestingly, there are reports that for a brief while blurred backgrounds worked, too. A popular thread imploring Microsoft to keep the Linux client up-to-date ('Keep the Linux Client up to date with the latest features') was locked in May. A new one with the same title has since been started, yet it hasn't gained the same traction. I think many people have given up, to be honest.
That could definitely be a reason why Microsoft is doing it. After all, you don't wanna give too much to your competition which has a small but strong base supporting it....
I use a combination of WPS and LO to replace Word and PPT. I use WPS for when compatibility is a necessity (like dealing with Word documents with complex layout, or dealing with doc without x), and I use LO when writing documents from scratch or when I don't care about exact layout compatibility. For Excel and Visio, I use LO exclusively. Also WPS comes with updated MS core fonts.
It looks like a nice solution even though WPS is not FOSS, I can't complain. There was once I messed up a presentation in highschool because the slide's animation did not work on MS Powerpoint.

I've been using Linux since I built my first desktop computer back in 2019, started with Linux Mint then switched to Manjaro early this year. I still keep a W10 laptop for whenever I need to use it for whatever reason. I'll be installing Linux Mint on that old laptop once Microsoft ends support for W10 and only use Windows if my next job requires me to use W11. Otherwise, at least for home use, I'll be using Linux, it's just been getting easier to use every year as I've gotten used to it. My own home uses are gaming, media server, writing and web browsing, and I don't need Microsoft's ecosystem for what I do.

My reluctance about using Libre Office is that it's slow to load and cumbersome. After years of using what is now Apache(?) I could write a book, what is missing in Libre and other apps. MS Office is not replaceable (online version is a shadow of the Windows native app). However, LO is the second best. The rest office apps may have some better compatibility, but when it comes to usage, they are merely a child toys, not suitable for normal work, unless you need only basics of the basics, on a school level. At work, it's just not enough, not nearly enough. Macros, VBS, advanced filters, superior unctions (that don't exist outside MS Office, like xlookup) - those are needed but not offered by other apps, so MS Office is just the best. I say it with a heavy heart, but there is no real comparison. MS Office number one, then long, long nothing, LO maybe number 20, the rest would place on thousands or further other places. So basically outside MS Office and LO, other apps are a joke for me, suitable maybe for kids or computer illiterate. As to Teams, we use it, but I don't like it. It's heavy, slow, counter-intuitive, has many issues, limited in many ways and allows for working with one thing at a time, so when you edit a file, you can't see chat messages or do anything else (unless I'm missing something). It's just clunky.
I'm still waiting to switch back to Linux until Microsoft Edge for Linux comes out of beta and has the "read aloud from here" feature, which it doesn't right now. No other browser has as good of voices and integrates so seamlessly with the content of the webpage than Edge. My criteria us that I specify a start point but no end point or selection is required. It should read aloud the entire read of the page if I don't stop it. It also must highlight each word that it reads aloud on the page as it goes. Now other browser does this other than Edge on Windows and MacOS.
My little 2011 netbook made me seriously consider using a distro fr. At first was only interested in saving my netbook with linux mint. Netgear routers with a USB drive actually work really well with both Windows and Linux networks, and even play nice with mixed networks that include Microsoft, Mac OS, and Linux devices, and their iOS/Android management app for their routers is really good in my experience, so if you're running a small business or home office, if your ISP lets you use 3rd party routers, grab a Netgear gateway device that supports the standard for your ISP. If you live in the US, you can even get out of paying those annoying monthly or annual equipment rental fees, and get the actual advertised price, with only taxes and nominal fees on top.

What about windows subsystem for linux? I believe the newer releases have GPU support so it's really just a bash shell available while running Windows, kinda like opening up the command prompt. I have Kali Linux installed and an app called X410 that lets me run XFCE Kali in a desktop environment like a virtual machine, only on a more native level than a virtual machine does.
@@HDSQ What do you mean it doesn't help? It's literally any distro you want integrated into Windows. WSL2 has major upgrades. I have Kali running in seamless mode so it just opens tools up like they're Windows programs.
@@Someone-mn1sx I said if you don't like windows then WSL2 doesn't help because it's still Windows. Obviously if you just want some Linux tools then it's great (in fact I used it for well over a year and loved it), but it's far from comparable to a full Linux desktop, which is what this video is about.
@@HDSQ Oh I misunderstood. Well I know that but devices generally work better. Drivers are more up to date, etc. You can remove all tracking with things like W10Privacy or Blackbird. Classic start menu is completely free and is 7 style with modern colors and transparency. I used to be a Debian user but it's so limited and the programs I use don't run nearly as well in VMs as natively, so I went back to Windows. For devices I don't use daily, like a raspberry pi or anything robotic then I'd use Linux over Windows, but for a daily driver it's Windows with WSL.

Distro overload will continue to be the Achilles heal of Linux adoption by the average consumer. Too many choices always leads to lack of commitment. Gnome just needs to make its own distro where everything works seamlessly out of the box. Sounds like Fedora 35 is the closest to this possible right now.
Are you still sticking with Zorin OS, I've gone for OS 16 Pro, hit tired of windows 11 issues and now the Edge changes being forced on users and ads. Are you still happy with Zorin as a daily driver?

i like to take the , poke it with the longest stick i have, method. where i am the hardware and the sticks length is how far i can get it from the hardware... so in most cases that means putting it in a virtual machine. the longest stick i have is to put it on a completely different machine in a virtualbox and accessing it via ssh x11 forwarding but i don't always have a spare computer kicking around so just putting it in a virtual machine is long enough stick most of the time.
even that is rare btw ... it's not very useful yet because virtualbox doesn't support directx which would be like the 1 reason i'd have a windows installation. but i've installed windows 10 inside virtualbox a few times just to see what bullshit they've done so far.

For many years Windows XP, and now Windows 10 have existed as virtual machines on my linux workstation. I preferred running XP machine as long as possible because the newer Windows have higher requirements. Now if I can just fix the graphics issue I occasionally have, that would be great.
Thanks for this but please look up what unique means. It's not a synonym for unusual and there can be nothing that is very unique as distinguished from somewhat, slightly or moderately unique.
I hate to break it to you, but language isn't required to be logical. Indeed, few aspects of naturally-evolved language even come close to being fully logically consistent. What you are complaining about here is the mis-matched pairing in English of non-gradable adjective with a grading adverb or comparative form. While it is true that such combinations are not really considered "correct", in a formal sense, some collocations are still commonly used, particularly in informal language. When used, they generally denote, not a degree of absoluteness itself, but how close the subject comes to achieving that absolute state. e.g. _We the people of the United States, in order to form a _*_more perfect_*_ union..._ Thus, it is not that "unique" in "very unique" is synonymous with "unusual", but that "very" is informally synonymous with "nearly". And no natural English speaker is going to be confused by the lack of "logic" behind it.
Everybody knows Linux alternative to MS office. But some really simple functions aren't available anywhere but on office. I often need the simple function : search and replace all, but with settings that changes the modified cells background into yellow or whatever other color. So far, no other suit proposes it. Now other browser does this other than Edge on Windows and MacOS.
why install linux if microsoft sees your browsing history anyways
@keithsze001 i like the secure and lightweight nature of linux but i honestly made the switch because i liked the customizability of linux
My little 2011 netbook made me seriously consider using a distro fr. At first was only interested in saving my netbook with linux mint. It worked so good aside from being limited by the netbook's 32 bit architecture. Looking into doing dual with Manjaro for my main w10 pc, but still really scared of losing data or breaking the thing.
where are you man? don't stop with the videos, your channel has a lot of potential and has a lot to grow and evolve! 🚀
Hi, I'm hoping you can help me. You obviously understand more about computers that I ever will. I am looking for a digital microscope that will record a picture of the examined object on my computer-Linux Kernal 4.40-186-generic Ubuntu Mint18.1 Cinnamon 64 Bit for retrieval. Will the Netgear router make a Windows/Mac only compatible microscope work with my system. My ISP is Verizon. Thank you.
I just dual-boot Zorin and windows, it's just simpler that way.
I use the same. Dual Boot. Windows 10 with Zorins OS 15.3 x64
Saving to watch it later with time as usual, I am used to this but your videos have good quality content so I will watch it nontheless
I hate that I like Microsoft Edge. It's Microsoft, but it's also fast and has great features
It's so efficient, sad to see people hate on it just because it's Microsoft.
The web apps works great, been using them for a couple years and I don't miss any desktop apps
letsgooo i ordered a nvme drive yesterday to daily drive arch
and now this is in my recommended
pretty cool
Ttf-ms-fonts from the aur is great too
I use Garuda (Arch Fork) with 2 monitors for the interwebs and Windows 10 for gaming and Photoshop. Garuda runs very smooth and fast. Never had a problem with it for almost a year now.
From one Linux Blaine to another, thanks for the video! Gladly subscribed!
@InfinitelyGalactic The URL for your blog posting is messed up. Double protocol specified. Means folks cannot use the link to get to the Blog: "http’s DNS address could not be found. Diagnosing the problem. DNS_PROBE_POSSIBLE". Also What's up with using "HTTP" instead of "HTTPS" in this day and age??
What about windows subsystem for linux? I believe the newer releases have GPU support so it's really just a bash shell available while running Windows, kinda like opening up the command prompt. I have Kali Linux installed and an app called X410 that lets me run XFCE Kali in a desktop environment like a virtual machine, only on a more native level than a virtual machine does.
WSL is nice, but of you've had it with Windows it doesn't really help.
I've been checking everyday for your video lol.
I use all, Linux and Mac for my work as a "developer" , Windows for multimedia and gaming!
Yes it's me. my office uses windows 10, but at home, I use ubuntu, sometimes when I bring work home and type with libre office, when I bring it to the office it will change and sometimes even have to re-edit it again. Windows only has one advantage, IDM, I've tried all of the download managers on Linux, but haven't found such a great download manager.
Use open file format for docs you plan to use between libre office and MS Word.
Valuable insight, because office suite is only thing thats holds back to windows.
Good efforts.
Thank you - some real pearls of wisdom here that I will make good use of.
For MS Exchange / Office365 integration for Thunderbird, run the following addons: TBSync + Provider for CalDAV and CardDAV + Provider for Exchange ActiveSync. Now supporting TB102. John Beiling and the developer support team have done a bang up job. Been using this solution for years on Linux but having to run an email that is MS based. Check out their work and consider a small donation.
I have been punished for not looking at the timestamp and thinking this was a meme...
Now I can't click over!!
Adobe is the biggest problem.
There is still no way to check emails via exchange, with web interface disabled.
Congratulations for another great video! Waiting for part II...and part III, if you wish.
Distro overload will continue to be the Achilles heal of Linux adoption by the average consumer. Too many choices always leads to lack of commitment. Gnome just needs to make its own distro where everything works seamlessly out of the box. Sounds like Fedora 35 is the closest to this possible right now.
Which distribution is that? Looks cool
Am I missing the link where you show how Synology allows syncing files to OneDrive?
Which Linux Disto is that? The desktop looks nice.
Are you still sticking with Zorin OS, I've gone for OS 16 Pro, hit tired of windows 11 issues and now the Edge changes being forced on users and ads. Are you still happy with Zorin as a daily driver?
TEAMS DOES WORK WITH WAYLAND?? OR NOT YET??
This is helpful. There is a very good possibility that if I figure out a way to install a linux distro on an Atom powered Surface, I will more than likely be using the same apps with a wrapper just to have a familiar environment minus the memory and other performance issues. Thanks.
I just install Zorin 16 on my Loptop, but I destroyed my Windows 8.1. Most of the method to make bootable drive to boot windows is not supported already these days. My Image mount did not work either to my flashdive. Can you update the available method to make bootable drive for windows?
Use balena etcher to create a bootable media
I use Linux for all things basically however, Blu ray seems to be impossible so I just play standard hi def disk unless I can stream it.
So at 10:22 you are referring to the fact that Calibri will be without any anti-aliasing and will look almost unreadable? So this script does NOT solve that problem?
Hi, I'm a corporate lawyer and I will be typing tons of documents(.docx), surfing internet and editing pdfs. So, could you suggest me right Linux Distro for my usage?
1. Download your virtual machine software of choice
2. Setup Windows
3. Full screen the virtual machine in its own workspace
4. Profit
which operating system is best for gaming .or which of linux had you chosen which is best for gaming is manjaro good for gaming or pop.system76, if you can link which is good of linux
I'm running an Arch based system, I haven't had Windoze since 2018
the only thing I'm missing is Irfan View. So far I have not found a lightweight image viewer, with some editing capability, advanced batch conversion tools and easy folder viewing in linux. If anyone knows of such a program, then please let me know. Thanks!
Before we were given laptops from our school that we paid for we got a pamphlet that had rules on what you could do on the computers installing another OS was forbidden (I did it anyway)
What theme are you using in Ubuntu?
I love Linux Mint for my desktop at home.
Having VirtualBox Windows 10 for some odd software I can't get for Linux.
Windows 10 for my Laptop, mainly because my Campus require either Windows or Mac, and I have no experience with Mac, thuse going for Wimdows.
But having a VirtualBox for Linux Mint
I have been trying to figure out if the haltech esp software and tuner nerd software and my logging software will work on Linux, but I have been struggling so much and put off just trying to install wine lol so yeah weather I use the command line or the store it fails to download and I don't know why so if I can't even get wine working I'm not going to bother swapping because I have to use these windows only 64 bit only software haltech in particular you can't even get a 32bit program
I want to integrate Linux in my daily working routine but I am used to Windows and now have to work with iOS. Nevertheless I want a notebook with Linux. OneDrive will connect it all. Do you think it will work well? Greetings
I left Windows in 2014 as Windows 10 was coming out, and Windows XP losing support. Haven't looked back
I Can get by with web versions of ms products, only real problem Is I still cannot share screen on teams, neither web or native version
How did you get the Zorin desktop to imitate Windows 11?
Actually this one is the free one. Just right click the bottom panel and move the task bar elements to “Monitor center” 👍👌
@@InfinitelyGalactic Oh good. Thanks a lot buddy.
Hey my pentab doesn't work with Linux so I have to use the windows can you make something like that?
There´s a good chance your tablet is supported by open tablet driver, so try that out i guess
Great video very informative 👍
i like to take the , poke it with the longest stick i have, method.
where i am the hardware and the sticks length is how far i can get it from the hardware...
so in most cases that means putting it in a virtual machine.
the longest stick i have is to put it on a completely different machine in a virtualbox and accessing it via ssh x11 forwarding but i don't always have a spare computer kicking around so just putting it in a virtual machine is long enough stick most of the time.
even that is rare btw ... it's not very useful yet because virtualbox doesn't support directx which would be like the 1 reason i'd have a windows installation.
but i've installed windows 10 inside virtualbox a few times just to see what bullshit they've done so far.
I love linux. But the support for gaming and other software just stops me from installing it on my desktop. I run it on my development laptop though and I will never switch back to any other OS.
did you forget the Linux k9 keycap change?
Any arch based distro like manjaro and garuda and some others like steam os in the future which is built on top of manjaro are great alternatives to windows.
I'm lucky that for my works they use a web page that has all windows services that uses the web versions
Unfortunately i have to use windows at work because i somewhat share a computer with someone else and they dont understand technology at all so switching it up would confuse the hell out of them so i installed virtualbox with an EndeavourOS VM and i use that.
Excellent video 💯
what the most I wanted in Linux is Mendeley
I plan to run my main computer on Linux, and my laptop on Windows
Did he mention the distribution he is using? I didn't pick that up? Someone knows?
ZorinOS
I need to use proprietary tts voices which are only available on windows.
08:04 Where's Tahoma? :p
Nevermind. It's lower on this page, as a separate font.
Probably gonna change to linux distro when i graduate from college
I'm so frustrated. I just want to run Linux, however I need Adobe for work and for the few games I play now. Is anyone else in a similar situation and if so, what are you doing to try and use Linux?
And first thing you notice you can't create Teams Account with Firefox. I don't use Chrome on purpous.
+1 for using zorin
i want to avoid google play services - i can get apks for most all things, but i CANT compromise with getting the banking apps from third parties.
Switching over to Linux to avoid dealing with Windows 11 daily. Gonna just keep windows on my gaming pc.
AFAIK snap and flatpak versions of Teams are not maintained by MS. Take that for what it is
I dual boot and use Windows about one percent of the time.....for a couple of programs. Been doing that for about 15 years. I use Windows 7, and, don't even surf the web on Windows. Humans are lemmings, for the most part. They're gonna do what they see most other people do - without a thought, generally. Windows "development" is driven by the need for some shiny, new thing to keep shareholders and CEOs making ever increasing profits. Microsoft is a gigantic monopoly and, pretty much, I think it's evil.
I'm scared that true AI will arrive and it will be owned by a big corporation, as the future then will be totally owned. I hope the code for true AI is open source, so that there's some freedom left for the future.
@@osborne9255 I agree......it's scary.
Having worked with many corporations as a solutions specialist. Share point is garbage. Haven’t met an IT running it right.
I will say, Teams works really well.
For many years Windows XP, and now Windows 10 have existed as virtual machines on my linux workstation. I preferred running XP machine as long as possible because the newer Windows have higher requirements.
Now if I can just fix the graphics issue I occasionally have, that would be great.
They are both important.
1. Windows for Client user.
2. Linux for Server.
Thanks for this but please look up what unique means. It's not a synonym for unusual and there can be nothing that is very unique as distinguished from somewhat, slightly or moderately unique.
tom baker makes the same point in an episode of dr who. do not qualify 'unique'. however current usage differs.🤩
When used, they generally denote, not a degree of absoluteness itself, but how close the subject comes to achieving that absolute state. e.g.
_We the people of the United States, in order to form a _*_more perfect_*_ union..._
Thus, it is not that "unique" in "very unique" is synonymous with "unusual", but that "very" is informally synonymous with "nearly".
Not even MS office for Mac. Only Windows MS office does it, and it kills me.
Try wine
Kernel Kesaria is Hardware Protection. Not Software Separation of Processes, Like Minix.
However, It is Security Focused. Not Monolithic Forget About Like Linux or Windows.
Excellelnt video, thankyou
Watching this video at 1080p50ps from pop_os, where previously my windows 7 pc struggled even at 720p, it has an amd a4 7300 processor, 4gb ram single channel and a 120gb hdd, yes not a ssd. my main pc is still running windows 10, maybe i'll migrate to linux when i'm brave enough
Great ideas!
