Just to clarify this is NOT dangerous in any way! Quite normal procedure, there is at least a 1,000ft vertical separation. This happens
on a daily basis with several aircraft worldwide! Nothing dangerous at all, just beautiful to see!
I was on-board a Norwegian 787 Dreamliner, EI-LNG from London Gatwick to New York JFK and for a good half an hour while across the Atlantic I had noticed we were catching up with other traffic. So I started filming and waited for it to come into sight... This is what I caught. I did a playback on flightradar24 after our arrival and from what I gather the Virgin flight was VS11 from Heathrow to Boston at 39,000ft while I was at 40,000ft in the Dreamliner.
A great sight, and one not missed by many on the aircraft! Caught lots of peoples attention also taking pictures and videos of it.

I remember reading a story a while back. A Boeing 747 took off from JFK bound for Paris France. It was followed by an Air France Concorde. The Concorde of course over took the 747 in short order because it was going 800 mph faster. Anyway, the Concorde landed first, passengers got off, luggage was removed. Then it was prepped for the return trip home. The Concorde was half way back to NYC when the 747 finally landed in Paris. This video reminded me of that story.

There was also one about a Citation X going downhill from Witchita KA to Singapore in the middle of the night, overtaking some cargo flights along the way at about 1 NM per minute. A 757 driver casually asked Center "What is that airplane passing us?" (10,000 feet higher and 60 knots faster.) "Sir, that is a Cessna!" Completely replete with an abundant lack of further information from ATC. (The story might have been embellished, though. I love it, nevertheless.) I even have my own. Borrowing a flight plan from a Commander 1000 to go from Auckland (NZ) to Wellington in a Beech76. The Commander pilots were nowhere to be seen at either end, yet they had done two practice circuits at a place called Palmerston North along the way.
Also when flying from London to NY. You arrived usually an hour earlier than you left London. Real "time travel" ha.
You rarely get a sense of speed when flying in a commercial airliner. Here I can really sense how they are hauling ass like there is no tomorrow. Great video.

The A340, on the other hand, is probably traveling at roughly in the region of approximately close to, plus or minus a few km/h, a velocity which may exceed, by some margin, or possibly not, depending on whether they need to make up time, or not, as the case may be, a speed not too different from it's published average cruising speed, which, in the case of an A340 is, somewhere around .78M.
Or thereabouts. Or not. I don't really know if I'm honest. I could Google it. But I can't be arsed. Now there's a thought, one could go on Google and look if one was really interested...

I would agree to some degree but you can't compare 1948 to 2016! Even 10 years is a pretty significant change in plane design and technology. Imagine trying to tell Orville that the British and French built a passenger jet that could fly 100 people in comfort from New York City to London in barely 3 and a half hours...
My dad has flown the Concorde only once and ironically, for the very reason it was built: to get a businessman across the Atlantic and back within the same day. However, it was a one way trip. He flew a BA 747 back to New York. They put him on the Concorde because he would be extremely late for the meeting. He said he was surprised that at mach 1, the windows get warm and glow orange around the edges! I guess it's because of the intense heat from the air rushing over the plane's body.

largol33t1 Yes. But. In his lifetime jet fighters were doing 500mph, and just a few years after he died, fighters had jets taking them to supersonic speeds, with the first jetliner Comet coming in also around that time at 40,000ft looking very much a modern machine.

I am an air traffic controller and this is my first time seeing two planes with 1000ft separation. Now I'm not gonna relax in front of a radar after seeing this. Incredibly awesome. thank you for sharing this with us. . 😀😀😀

I’ve always thought they looked weird
It's hard to gauge just how massive and impressive our planes are. The velocities they fly at, even though they are much slower then a Concorde, is truly hard to comprehend until you see it in a video like this. The only other example I could think of which would do a better job is when you see a plane travelling in the opposite direction below you, if you don't blink that is.

Great video ! I recently was on a Ryanair flight to Ostrava when we met a Emirates 777-300ER going the other way ... It was as close as that, possibly more as I only had a few seconds to see it and noticed the airline and the plane model ... Amazing !

If it hasn't been said yet, 40k ft is near the top of RVSM airspace which allows the 1000ft separation. It used to be 2000ft until it was realized that more and more air traffic were frequent the north atlantic routes. Beautiful contrails btw!!!

The A340 600 is now my favorite. I am 6'2 and the isles have only two seats, so your not crammed. Nice and comfortable. Of course it was with Lufthansa, so everything was enjoyable.
Yeah the A340 is an older 6 speed Auto with a lower ratio diff for faster acceleration . The new dual clutch 7 speed auto with over drive gives the 787 a higher top speed .:D

i then started to do paper rounds until i could afford myself a 340, that was back in 94, good times.

It's not everyday you see a flight this close too you. But then again were looking through a camera at a zoomed angle. So it's rather "subjective" in terms of just how close the two jets actually were. Pretty awesome none the less.
Very cool video Rachael. Thanks. I worked for Boeing as an engineer for 41 years. My first airplane project was the 747 and the last was the Dreamliner. I really enjoy good airplane videos. By the way, the A340 was part of Airbus' attempt to design two airplanes with lots of commonality to each other, including using the same engines. The twin engine A330 was pretty successful as a competitor for high end 767 and MD-11, but the four engine A340 was a dog. It was supposed to be competition for the 777, but with the extra drag of four engines and other aerodynamic problems it failed miserably. Many A340 customers traded them in for 777's after only a few years in service. Boeing couldn't sell them and they ended up parked in the Arizona desert, probably forever.
Thanks for this insight from an expert. I've heard several times that the A340 is not a very efficient aircraft.
Eric Janssen Yeah the four engine A340 was planned in a time when the ETOPS regulations for two engine planes were much stricter than they are today. Today, planes like the A330 and the B777-300ER are allowed to use routes that take them 240 or 330 flight minutes away from emergency runways. Airbus did not foresee that correctly when planning the A340. Hence the A340 can not compete with the two engine planes any more when it comes to efficiency.
Could'nt Airbus have seen this coming? Even Boeing is doing away with the 747,would be nice if they used 3 engines instead of 4
David Reed There's more to it than that. The A330 & A340 were designed at the same time and share most of their structure, including the wings. At the time, ETOPS was a limiting factor on twin engined operations & Airbus used the tagline '4 engines 4 long haul' - they could fly direct, instead of always remaining no more than 120 minutes from a diversionary airport. It's direct flight ability made it an economical aircraft - until the 777 turned up a couple of years later & ETOPS was 'coincidently' increased to 180 minutes.
The 777 was the first new design to be given 180 minutes ETOPS by the FAA. With the 777 being able to fly direct, most of the time, the A340 lost it's direct route advantage - removing the main thing that made it economical.
The A330 is still in production & taking orders, with the 330NEO planned.
All but the very largest future aircraft will be twins.

Such a cool video. The B787 is such a modern and interresting plane, I love the wing flex. And the A340 is so beautiful. Perhaps not the most efficient or common plane in the sky but imho it's one of the most beautiful, perhaps the most beautiful of them all
The A345 is what some call the modern day 747SP. Excellent range, used for what was the longest passenger flight in the world (SQ21/22), but slow sales due to losing out to the 777LR. Who knows, maybe in a few years they will be purchased by heads of state or rich celebrities as private jets.
nigahiga6400 This was a A340-600. the 500 series is the one you are talking about! the 600 did not have the range of the 500!
Except of course the 747-SP is the fastest of the bunch.
Beautiful video. In 2007 I flew from Atlanta to Rome on a 777-300 and there was another 777 with us all the way until it turned south somewhere over Iceland though it was definitely not as close.

Wow, this was exciting! I've noticed that the Dreamliner flies at a higher altitude, and faster the the conventional aircraft, but never seen anything like this. I fllown Norwegian Dreamliner to Bangkok, and just loved the experience of this airplane, the service, and the affordable price!
The service ceiling is about the same for all these big airlines. It's just simply benefiting from better winds than the A340. Only real example of a "faster" subsonic hey would be the CV-990, and none of the them have flown in decades

Yes. That's why human life expectancy in developed countries (you know the ones with most planes over them) is higher now than it ever has been.
Big jets of the same or approx. weight class fly 2,000 ft above each other heading the same direction. And smaller / midsize jets fly 3,000 ft to 8,760 ft below the big jets.
A380 TOP, C5, C17, ANTNOW, KC air tankers, 747 ETC..
2,000 FT INBETWEEN SPACE, AND 500 ft apart, left or right heading the direction
BELOW. 777, A340, 787, MD 11,
A330, 767 fly 3.000 ft to 5,000 ft below depending on the air traffic heading the same direction but 900 ft apart left or right.
757, 737 A320, and some others in that weight class fly way below the above big jets.
They also have following distance rules mini is about 15 mins. if they follow too close then they will encounter turbulence. In fact all of their routing, turns, landing, take off, taxi, air speed, flying levels, following distance, etc... are giving to the pilots constantly by the air control towers.
You're right that it's 2,000 ft. separation if they're going the same way in most cases, but there are special rules in place to allow 1,000 ft. on some of the trans-oceanic routes, such as the one in this video.

Sometimes when I get on an airplane I imagibe it's like a teleportation machine that when it's actually "flying" we're just stuck somewhere on the ground. Videos like this bring the whole crazy reality.

One time I was playing FS2004 flying high over the Atlantic on my way to Miami International, when all of a sudden...BAM!!! A plane T-boned me right in mid-air. Then I had to start the flight over again 😡 this video reminded me of that.
This is not a A340-200/300. The A340-600 is not underpowered. Period. The Virgin Atlantic A346 uses 4-Trent 556-61 certified to a takeoff thrust of 260kn each.

Commercial airplanes in service don't fly as fast as they can go. They fly at a speed just below the point where the (shock) wave drag begins to ramp up rapidly due to supersonic flow over a portion of the wing. This maximizes range and keeps fuel consumption at optimum. Boeing still has the edge on Airbus regarding wing aerodynamics, and consequently the 787 has a higher cruising speed than the A340.

***** This is not correct. The cruising speed of the B787 is higher than the A340, in a situation like this the Dreamliner will pass a A340. The 787 is also capable to cruise at a higher altitude (visibly seen on this video), where the air is thinner.
Eric Janssen The cruise altitude for an airliner changes as they burn off fuel. The lighter the airplane gets the higher it can go and still get the necessary lift. Another consideration is the structural life of the fuselage. The higher the altitude the more stress on the structure, so the total life of the airframe is reduced by cruising at higher altitudes. The 787 definitely has better structure than any of the aluminum tube aircraft, so can fly higher. Over the life of the airplane the savings in fuel is huge.
rachaelmatt The 787 does fly faster than SOME other aircraft, but not all. You are correct that it can cruise at 0.85 mach but the 747-8, A350 and A380 are also able to do so (I think the latter 2 are 0.86 mach). In a real world scenario, optimal cruise speed is affected by weight and the range required. The only aircraft I've ever heard of having lower fuel burn at higher cruise speeds is the A380.

It's not everyday you see another jet that close to you outside your window. I wonder if they were both headed to the same destination or at least close range to each others destinations...? The Airbus has 4 engines and the Boeing only has two so that's saying something right there in terms of speed unless the Airbus wasn't at full throttle. What ever the case great great camera footage regardless...!!!

tomtalker2000 This is actually a more regular thing than people expect. I've seen it before, not quite that close but not far off. You can see races all the time looking on Flight Radar. There's often 2 side by side somewhere with just 1,000ft vertical separation.
Incredible. I have a deep passion for anything avian I've been in the avian field (birding wise) where it all started for the last 30yrs having both wild & exotic species experience. I've worked with everything from Warblers to Birds of Prey and Budgies to Macaws. I often tell folks that when you watch a soaring Bird of Prey even a Raven for that matter. Watch there primary wingtips as they soar because you will see them spread out like fingers on your hand. Sometimes they will be pointed other times there will be a deep spread in between each fingered wingtip. Other times there will be two tips up and two pointing downwards. Hold your hand out to your side with your thumb tucked in and 4 fingers spread apart and you'll get an idea of what i'm talking about when the soar. This method is EXACTLY what we copied from them with the wingtips we added onto jets. With them added onto a jet obviously less fuel is used up during a flight. And for birds that soar the way they adjust there fingered wingtips is very similar to a jet in how it affects the manner in which they soar on a thermal updraft. And whether or not they have to flap and exert the extra effort or simply adjust there wingtips to the thermal there soaring on. I'm sure you've also noticed how when planes land the flaps are deployed and lowered. Birds do the exact same thing EVERYONE of them minus Hummingbirds and Penguins to slow there flight upon a landing. It's truly amazing what we've copied from nature but we'll never perfect it the way they have.
Ive seen a United Boeing 777 really close my to my windows while flying from Frankfurt to Miami on a Lufthansa A380. Saw it over the coast of Canada.
I wonder how the passengers on the 777 reacted to a big A380 outside their windows.

I think the pilot wanted to give that view equally to passengers on the right side of the plane as well. Towards the end of the video, I could see it was drifting left to position the aircraft to the left of the Virgin Atlantic. Nice pilot.

Devon Edwards at least 1000ft of vertical separation so there was no chance of these planes hitting. This happens 100s( if not 1000s) of times a day

Not a surprise at all. Recently on Norwegian Air to London, the ground speed according to the screen on the seatback in front of me was 703 mph (.92 speed of sound). Whenever I can I fly the Dreamliner even if it is more expensive...what a great piece of engineering. The flight to London from Boston was just over 5 hours.

Nope, the Airbus A350-1000 has 25% lower fuel burn per seat than 777-300ER, and the A350 does not vanish without a trace like the 777 has done. With significantly better fuel consumption and better safety, the A350 XWB is a far better choice.
You may be right but the front of the A350 looks hideous compared to the 777-300ER

By Virgin you mean Delta Airlines. They have ordered A330 neos and the new A350s. They will replace the 767s in their fleet.
Sounds cool 777 300er would suit them replace the a340 and sadly 747 but still love both aircrafts

I think your comment is unfair and unjustified. Yes, the A350 has lower fuel burn, and I have no doubt that it will likely offer a more pleasant flying experience also. But as so far, only about 5 A350s have been out flying, mostly for testing, your comment regarding safety is completely unfounded. The 777 has a superb safety record, one of the best for any commercial aircraft ever, and MH370 hasn't changed that until we know what happened, if we ever find out. And for the record, I prefer Airbus.
That is very cool footage! I recall getting close to a 737 over Beijing but I wasn't fast enough to pull out my camera!
I had 2 amasing experiances on a flight i was on from Alicante-Dublin. It was about 10pm but i could just make out the red and green wing lights of a plane flying over at around 37,000ft and then another was that i looked at towards the back and just passing behind my plane was another aircraft which looked to be an a320
AMAZING capture! As a flight attendant for NWA, I never got tired of things like this.
Very nice shoot of the A340 flight which is approximately 1,000 feet (34,800 cm) below. Both B787 (Dreamliner) and A340 have the same Roll Royce engines in compared with each others about the speed. Because of a new fiberglass and technological wingspans in the aircraft, the Dreamliner is lighter and flying faster than any aircrafts including A380. Thanks for a good show.

In 1992 I was on a Concorde Promo flight from Jeddah to London. It took off an hour after the regular BA 767 flight and landed in London an hour ahead of it.

Nice..Very nice video..I like to see flightradar24 too.. ..last week I was taking a look on Turkish Airlines TK15 and TK16 route: Istanbul - Sao Paulo - Buenos Aires and returning..these Boeing 777-300's flights passes over Leopold Sedar Airport in Dakar and over Rio de Janeiro (where I live) sky at a high altitude going to Sao Paulo and Buenos Aires..one day on Flightradar I notice a radical curve to right over Brazil and Uruguay's frontier and I found in a weather report map that it was happening a large zone of instability just that moment..it was amazing find it.. it's too bad nothing like this exists of the concorde overtaking other commercial airliners. you were at 40000 ft, which looks amazingly high, and the concorde would still be 15000 ft higher going 800mph faster. incredible.

Amazing video. Boeing 787 was behind and finally caught up and passed over the old A-340. No way A-340 can compete with the New Dreamliner. Nice video.

Beautiful Clean Green Safe Boeing 787 Dreamliner flies higher but has a much lower cabin altitude and uses half the fuel and also flies much faster than other airliners making the flight quicker.

I think the A 340 600 is a lovely looking airliner so slimline 4 engined job plus the colour contrast airline markings like the red white and and grey look sharp and distinctive virgin Atlantic logo on all there aircraft.
A friend flew the 727-100 and claimed regular .93 mach cruise speeds with occasional .97 long shallow dives. He said always 100+ faster than the new efficient big fan jets. They woke the dead on nigh-time departures with REALLY loud engines. The .85 mach cruise for the 787 is no match for speed, but the noise of the small engines got them banned. The high cruise speed was significant going across the country. I'm pretty sure John Travolta passed us the other day in his 707(how many fly west to Ca.?) like we were standing still.
I have seen this kind of scene a good number of times on domestic flights from KUL to BKI. Sometimes as many as three airplanes in one flight. But they are mostly going the opposite direction. And just 737 or A320 :D
However this is the best scene, two big airplanes, catching up to each other... Wish to be in your seat )))
