    Hello My Dear Friend,
    During June 1981, I was a member of Bravo Company 1st Bn 5th Marine Regiment temporarily on Unit Rotation to 3rd Marine Division, Camp Butler Okinawa. Our actual Home was Camp Pendleton California. During our Unit Rotation to Okinawa We performed a mobility exercise with the Air Force. We flew to Titian and did a Air Assault and Expeditionary Airfield Capture. After the 2 day exercise We stay for (1) month basically doing everything that could be done to keep a Marine Unit busy. Needless to say the tempers were hot as the weather. We slept on the west end of the runways that face Saipan. Rats were everywhere. We explored the entire island except We were not allowed to go to the Suicide Cliff area. Only Our Senior Officers went there. There was a Japanese Fishing Boat wreck beached on the end of the island by the small village..... It was so incredibly Hot there.... I thought about all the People who died there. Both Japanese & American.... Each believes that there life and culture philosophies are superior. So much blood shed and death happened on those Islands.... Americans do not understand the cost for their freedom.....
    Thank You for your incredible work....
    Sgt Curtis L Cains

    My dad was there and helped load the bombs into the planes with his crew. Radio Tech and maintenance. This was Top Secret for a long time no pictures were allowed but dad's friend, a flyer, privately took pics that he sent home to mother and I ended up with a couple but my dad died in 1961 suddenly in our home.
    Daddy and Shaumacker along with other good friends that flew the aircraft wouldn't let him go along when they dropped the bombs due to his poor vision in the event they crashed plus, he had a wife and child waiting on him at home. They had taught my dad how to fly the planes and he could do it if needed. Too bad there is no option to upload pictures he is a part of this amazing history.

    aaaah my friend, what can I say, what an artistic well thought through ending to your series. 08:23-11:15 is just bliss, from the choice of music to the lovely link of the drone to the free dive shot. beautiful stuff, i truly got goosebumps all across watching your video in bed last thing before i sleep. I genuinely appreciate your work and the effort and thought you put into it. Thank you

    Thanks for sharing your adventures on Saipan and Tinian. I've visited both several times to do still photography to document some of the history there. I post them on flickr. I find it amazing that one can find World War II artifacts where they fell over 70 years ago. They are rapidly disappearing, hence all the more important to capture them digitally to help preserve the history and in the memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice there.
    I can't be 100% certain, but I believe your homing tower site is actually the Japanese radar site on Tinian's Mt. Lasso. There was indeed a homing tower nearby.
    While I find the blues of the sea and skies around Saipan and Tinian to be amongst the bluest I've ever seen, I agree that the drone polarizer does push them a little too far :-)

    My grandfather was one of the B-29 crewmen based there. He also was part of a crew to clear the area for the four runways and the US base. He was a recon photographer and actually took some of those photos you see of the two bombs being loaded onto the two B-29's. This video really brings to life what my grandfather saw and where he lived while he was there. Great video.

    Hey. I really like your videos with dives to sunken objects in the Pacific ocean during the Second world war. Very cool and cool. I want to do this kind of diving myself. Can you advise what kind of fins should be used for such dives? What kind of fins are you using?

    • @freediverhd
      @freediverhd  5 років тому

      My fins are not longer in production. But the brand is C4. You could try something like Cressi Gara Pro, that would be a fairly common easy to get fin.

    The other bomb was called 'Fat Man'. This is a great video with some lovely footage, although it would have been nice if you'd given a bit more mention to the impact these bombing raids had on innocent civilians in Japan. People always focus on the fact that they ended the war (which is far from cut and dry), but having been to Hiroshima and seen the devastating aftermath of these raids in the museums, there is another side to this story. The US had very little information about what effect nuclear explosions would have in the long term - indeed they sent out scientific teams to study the effects in the years following the raids. So Hiroshima and Nagasaki were effectively nuclear test beds. Millions of people have suffered with ill health effects and genetic problems over the years since then. To quote the lyrics of Enola Gay: _"this kiss you give, It's never ever gonna to fade away"_

      not sure. There are 3 more wrecks in Saipan which I did not dive... so I could try and dive them, and make a kinda season 2. I have some Guam videos which are still not released, so i still need edit those and release them. I also want to do another deep dive at the American Tanker, focus on swimming through the wreck, a more pure freediving vid.. There is a deep wreck on the island of Rota which I wanna try (very deep and dangerous and never freedived before, so need to consider the risk)..... biggest issue is that these videos cost $$$$ to make, and the return is $, so... need to decide carefully where I spend my money.

    My dad flew P-51 Mustangs off of Iwo Jima to escort the Tinian bombers over Japan. Your videography is amazing and your narration shows respect for the history. The interspersed clips work well too. Will you ever go to Iwo?

    • @freediverhd
      @freediverhd  7 років тому +1

      Ed, thank you so much for that feed back. I wish I could go to Iwo, but it's not easy as its not open to the public. You are the second person in 2 weeks to come forward and talk about parents flying from Tinian over Iwo.

    • @EdCali1
      @EdCali1 7 років тому +2

      Few understand why these islands were so important to ending the war. The bombers were sitting ducks without fighter plane escort. The P-51 Mustangs had less fuel range, so Iwo Jima was necessary. Hence the great sacrifices to take these islands.

    • @freediverhd
      @freediverhd  7 років тому

      I did not realise that myself, I was not sure what state the Japanese airforce was in by that time in the war - it seemed after the battle of the Philippine sea - the Japanese air force wasn't up to much. Thanks for your support earlier today, really nice gesture. If you go through my channel there videos of various world war relics, like the Guam Amtrak, and Palau Seaplane, though they don't have the narration.

    • @EdCali1
      @EdCali1 7 років тому +2

      Yes, at this point in the war, most of the Japanese fighter planes where in defense of the homeland, hence the increase in danger to the US bombers flying off Tinian and the need for US fighter plane escort. BTW, an hour roundtrip squeezed into a P-51.

    Very nice footage and beautiful scenery. I understand the grief japanese people suffered at the end of the war but let's not forget that the Japanese Empire (allied to Hitler's Nazism) invaded and enslaved most of it's neighbor countries with ruthless barbarism. The reaction of the Allies was logical and not disproportionate to my criteria. Let's not forget as to not repeat errors of the past. Peace out.

    • @freediverhd
      @freediverhd  8 років тому +8

      The "depth" of my channel comes from the historic value of the wrecks I have dived.I freedive to visit historic sites - nothing has changed since 2012. I don't care about shooting fish, or getting a max depth to show off with. In the Saipan I freedived 4 wrecks sunk fighting to get this island - not make this video showing what they were fighting for, and how significant it was - that would leave a massive hole in the story for me.
