What I love about many of your videos is the information you are giving us about topics we may not understand. I will never do this however, it is always good to expand our knowledge about the world around us.
Hi Devon....enjoyed your video of plucking a Porky....I do sewn quillwork and quill wrapping thought I've only ever gotten a sort of fresh porky....I get salted dry hides and cut the quills off...Its interesting to me your words on plucking a porky. A friend sent me a video of a baby porcupine rescued when his mother died...I just happed to stumble on your video. 🙂
Love your vlogs!. So great you are sharing your knowledge, passing it on! Your videos will keep things from being forgotten. Also, you always have really good unique music. Thanks Devan, you're appreciated & valued!😀
You know you could’ve just waited for your dog to come home with a face full of quills😂. I remember growing up I always was the one that had to pull the quills out of my dog after he sniffed around and got caught. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Glad to see you’re well.
I think this is the only video on the entire UA-cam that has shown the removal and viewing of Quills close up. This could be a good educational video. Would love to see the QUILLS more close up.
Wela'lin Matt ... I'm L'nu aka Mi'kmaq from Nova Scotia ... live on Unama'ki Island where there's no porcupines & skunk on the island ... I'm learning to clean & pick & dye porcupines ... Wela'lin for your teachings
Awesome... I'm Navajo/ Hopi. It's kinda the same way we take our feathers. Every feather from every bird is used in many different ways, mostly spiritual. That's so interesting.
Wow, i kearned so much! I didn't know how natives used rhe porcupines. I always wondered what the natives wore on thier heads and what they are made of "roaches" how interesting. Thank you for the education as well as for keeping the traditions alive. May the Creator continue to bless you 🙏❣
Thank you for sharing! Learned a great deal. I was most entertained as well.....loved that you pointed out the obliques of the porky. Too funny! Oh....can’t forget “make wise choices!!”
Am I missing parts 4 and 5 somewhere? Like the way you approach this. I'm from Mille Lacs in Minnesota, grew up doing this a similar way and found your videos while looking to see how others are doing quillwork around the nation. Miigwech for the videos
Yus! I've been waiting for this next installment, thank you 🙏 Just the process in itself is so fascinating, to see how things are made from start to finish. Hope your wrist feels better soon.
ITS 2021 & IM HERE, HA, HA-Just knocked out a porcupine with a Boulder!! He came out of the woods!! He was so loud!! I thought it was Bigfoot😂😂 I captured it all on video too!! Anyway, I thought I’d tell you out of all the videos I looked up to help me clean this thing….YOURS WERE THE BESTEST!!
PS, I have DUEL CITIZENSHIP SWAMP PORCUPINE😂 Cause I’m right on the Canadian/American Border on a reservation called Akwesasne…My Mothers front yard is in Canada and her backyards in the Us!!! I also am busy doing this porcupine so I gotta go, it’s 4:42 in the am!! I need sleep💁 Ha, Ha!! ✌️✌️✌️✌️😉 out
That was cool. Being painfully white as I am I don't know how they are used but I love learning. I would love to see you and others show how you make the things you do. I am pretty sure if you get guests to come show their stuff not only would you increase subscriptions but also sale of your products. I would buy finished stuff and if you show how hard it is to do you can charge a higher price. People tend to think this stuff is easy and takes no time so make it look hard and they won't want to do it themselves they would rather buy finished product. Just my two cents hope it is good for you. Blessings, Judy
Awww. I missed your live!! I don't just like your videos. They should put up a heart for"love Devon Kicknosaway"!! I'm so sorry I missed your live! I so enjoy your vlogs! It's always interesting n always make me smile 🥰
Awesome man, was looking forward to that part 3 for awhile lol .. was good to see another video again... take it ez , and good choices are always a must 👍🏼
At last! Great to see you uploaded Part 3. :) I've been patiently waiting. Lol. I enjoy your enthusiasm and your sincerity in showing us all what you know and what works for you. I hope you and your family are doing great! Much Love from South Dakota! -Lorraine
Hi Devan, thank you for sharing your knowledge. I found your video very informative and funny. I wonder; you said that the porcupine is left outside to freeze and brought in to work on. Did you have to thaw out fully each time? Looks like the skin is not frozen when you pull the quills. I do a little quillwork embroidery style, taught to me by a wonderful Cree family in Alberta Canada. Moonstone Creation. Thank you
when I do that technique it keeps the organs frozen and prevents it from rotting and stinking. thawing just the skin allows for me to pluck it enough and then put it back outside. harder in the summer because I freeze them and then try and clean it all at once in the heat and fighting the flies.
Okay question.. I’ve done this a couple times now and I did come across a porcupine that had “bugs”… have you come across this as well? Best tips for cleaning a “buggy” porcupine. 😩
when it comes to spring or summer ones they usually do have ticks. easy to remove them after u pluck the quills. but I usually don't harvest summer quills, they get too brittle. winter is th best time
Wow thabk you for the reply. Medium size wow can't wait to see a big one. We don't have porcupines in WA that i have seen. My mom and i love your videos tbey are great. Keep up the good work. You make great choices.
I usually will gut it and then freeze it until I need it again. but usually I get pines in the winter so I can then just rotate them by leaving them outside. its summer ones u gotta worry about. they stink

You are so welcome!
Good to see you back 🙌 always enjoy watching
Thank you for making that poor dead porcupine into something beautiful! I know everything it’s made into will just be so awesome.
Talk about recycling and sustainability. Every part of the pine is used for something. Very educational for non Navajo lol

Nice imformation.
Will guard hairs, fur and quills be harder to pull if the I had to freeze the roadkill?
Just wondering if we need to wash the guard hairs or quills?
I'm in the washing process for my quills today. I find it therapeutic, do you as well?
what do you do with the porcupine after taking the quill?
What do you suggest for the smell while doing this
🤩
