I remember hearing this for the first time. I was stationed in London in the Navy and this came on the radio one night during a really slow shift. No one knew who they were but we were all hopping around playing air guitars like a bunch of fools. One of my fondest memories of this song. Still one of my favorites.
Every time I watch him play this, I’m astounded. Even MORE so when I learned that he’s a lefty that had to learn to play right handed because there were no lefty guitars readily available.
When I first heard this song back in 1978, I was like "who is THAT?!?". I've been a devoted Mark Knopfler ever since, and have everything he put out. Coolest player on the planet!
Another amazing rendition of this timeless classic. The irony of the line "guitar George, he knows all the chords, but he doesn't want to make it cry or sing" is never lost on me given that that is exactly what Mark is doing! The closing solo is a work of art, I've heard it lots of times and it is never exactly the same. Something Mark in fact claims, he has never played the solo the same twice, there is always something slightly different. The work of pure genius
It's my favourite thing about Mark and Dire Straits sound in general : the restraint. He obviously has enough skills and range to make it something flashy-showing off and throw it at your face, but he holds all that power in and just gives enough without forcing, which makes it immensely more powerful in my opinion. I feel that even more in "brothers in arms", any other group would have added more punch and variations in the guitar, or pushed the voice harder in the end of the song, but no, Mark doesn't do that, he just keeps it in control and that makes the power come out from the melody and the lyrics instead of gimmicks. Dire Straits is the definition of class and elegance, timeless musical perfection

The synergy of a great band right there. Rythm guitar absolutely rock solid, bass and drummer in perfect harmony, drummer accenting exactly the right parts of the solo, keyboard player doing a perfect goldilocks impression with neither too little or too much but exactly the right amount and knopfler as cool as a cucumber front and centre.
The first time I heard the ‘official’ radio release of this song, I was driving on the highway between N. Vancouver and Squamish….had to pull over and just listen, hoping it would never quit!! I think if I had kept on driving, I woulda put the gas pedal to the floor…haha!! So good!
The guitar between 2:17 and 2:22 is what I think always sets Knopfler apart. The subtlety of his playing that he achieves that contrasts with the belting solos. Its like there's no downtime in his playing, you don't wait for the solos for the amazing guitar stuff, its just prevalent throughout but not in your face. Its as close to perfect as I think it can be.
Mark makes a guitar come alive, its sings as he sings. The two are one. The improv playing and Mark can stretch strings like no one else. Keep it up,Luv.

What a kickass live performance. I think it ranks with the best i have seen in my 71 yrs. That's what happens whan a tight band lays down a impeccable groove and an inventive guitarist like Mark decorates it with all sorts of tasty riffs.

That would have been on their territory because John Illsley was sharing a flat with Mark's brother in Deptford when he met Mark so they were originally S London based. I was lucky enough to see Mark at the O2 about 3 years ago he was absolutely brilliant. Cost a tad more than 50p 🤣

I much prefer this to the Alchemy version despite that being the classic version of the band. This has better sound and picture quality and by this time MK had worked out a more interesting arrangement with a more prominent piano break and more clarity on the drumming. But they are both wonderful.

@Hugh Zapretti-Boyden I think the one I'm thinking of in South London is/was called "We anchor in hope". That would have been on their territory because John Illsley was sharing a flat with Mark's brother in Deptford when he met Mark so they were originally S London based. I was lucky enough to see Mark at the O2 about 3 years ago he was absolutely brilliant. Cost a tad more than 50p 🤣

I find the Alchemy Live version the best (Hammersmith Odeon 1983) but any performance of this song kicks ass. Love Knopfler.

I much prefer this to the Alchemy version despite that being the classic version of the band. This has better sound and picture quality and by this time MK had worked out a more interesting arrangement with a more prominent piano break and more clarity on the drumming. But they are both wonderful.
