First of all, I like your videos because you enjoy making them. Particularly for this kit I can surely say that it has a more rock sound than the original teles that sound country. I wanted to buy this kit in order to cut it and make it semi hollow but (as I can understand when you picked up it's body) it must be light weighted so neck dive is expected. Thanks for the good work and sharing!!!
Once again proving the point, that it’s not the equipment, it’s the commitment! He could make a canoe paddle strung with seaweed sound great? Very nice vid!
I got one of these kits a couple of years ago and covered it in Harris Tweed fabric at the request of a mate. Went better than expected so I would actually try that again. The cost was about the same then as now, and the build quality was ok, for the price. The fret ends were sharp though pretty much all along the neck, and the truss rod didn't perform well but the neck was straight enough. Be prepared to do a lot of fettling if you do get one. It's all good fun though!
The cost of the hardware is minimal. You might get the kit for £10 less, which if you plan to replace most/all of the kit hardware, isn't really going to be a deal breaker. Some of the parts, like the neck plate, are worth having, as another neck plate may not quite match the kit one for hole placement. As Brent says, kit tuners these days are pretty good, normally with an 16:1 or 18:1 ratio. It's invariably the nut that causes tuning issues and the nut/nut slots always come set too high. Fair enough if you want to set the guitar up for slide, but not great for standard use. Replacement of the plastic nut with a bone or Tusq nut, and the slots cut to the right depth with a decent set of nut files is the way to make this type of kit guitar instantly better and more stable to play. But good nut files aren't cheap.
I have built one too, my neck is really bad...the frets need some work, am scratching of the skin of my fingers playing it. Have to round the edges...soon. it is my first build, so l am kinda happy with what l did here. Will try more expensive kits later. Cheers
pascal bxl that’s not uncommon with an unfinished neck, it would happen to Fender or Warwick necks too, if they sit unfinished for some time, it’s the wood shrinking (and the frets not). Some fine wet/dry paper should take are of it, and then a good amount of fretboard oil ie. lemon, to keep it from shrinking more.
Enjoyed the video. I'm part way through building one myself. Rattle can DIY seafoam green. Shaped the headstock myself and am pleasantly pleased with the result- expected to make an arse of it!
Looks and sounds pretty nice. I would give it a belly cut and arm rest and probably swap one of the pickups for hot rails humbucker, for some heavier sounds.
That body looks good. A few months ago I bought the CST kit and the body was amazing. I just received the Strat kit and neck was great but the body looks so bad there is one piece on the body that is so different that it wouldn’t stain like the rest of the body. I wish they would at least try to match the wood pieces. Not everyone wants to paint.

Fretboard: Amaranth. Which is Purple Heart Wood. Peltogyne, commonly known as purpleheart, amendoim, violet wood, amaranth and other local names (often referencing the color of the wood). Thank you for the video. I heard wood darkens over time. do you think the wood on the guitar will darken and age over time? Also will you have to apply more tung oil over time? I love this stuff!

Brent, I hope it's okay if I post this: Guys, just a friendly heads up. I bought this because of Brents review, which I think is great and showed everything honestly, but I think they either sent him a selected and polished version of the actual kit or the built quality of these varies extremely, because the one I got was trash. The body looked like I cut it myself (with a scissor) and some of the drilled holes were off so much that I couldn't get the basic parts like the bridge properly screwed on and had to redrill them. Be careful with these kits if you don't have the patience and the experience to fix them in case you need to. Rock on and have a nice 2021, all of you.
Though I was back in the seventies watching some Fuckerty the BBC put out to terrify kids for a bit, talk about flash backs, 😂😂😂😂😂 I'm now thinking of one of those kits now 💭🙄

Hello Brent¡¡ Love your videos. I wanted to ask you something. The body looks much better on this one that on the Stratos.... I was looking to get the stratocaster. My Questions are, Do you think the body is much better because is the telecaster one? (maybe there are made in diferent factories?). How long is the difference between the Stratos and the Telecaster? ( Maybe HB is working to do better bodies). Did the second Stratocaster body had the alignement problem as the firstone? And... After the 3 build it guitars, and knowing the problems on the stratos, how is that you says in the video, you still prefer the stratos? Sorry too many questions, hope you are doing well on the Qarantine¡
Hi ya I recon they must come from different factories. They actually made good guitars. The telecaster body was much better. I kept the Telecaster and sold the strats. For the money they are worth a try IMO however I just reviewed a Glarry and it was awesome for the same money.
Burning things with a blow torch is always fun, but you already done that. How about trying a fabric finish? Someone said wallpaper finish, but I think that fabric one is cool and you have literally tons of designs to choose from.
@@andywrollo2915 My wife and I were just checking them out from your link, they look very cool and the price is right! Thanks for the great review bro........ Mike (Ipswich River Guitars).
The early 1960s Tele I owned didn’t have the plastic gasket under the neck plate but my 1975 one does. I think that they introduced them in order to protect the finish when the screws are tightened although I’ve never personally seen any paintwork damage around Tele neck plates. Anyway the plastic gasket isn’t an essential Tele component, none of my home built Teles and Esquires have them.
I see only one problem with these low cost guitars. The danger is you end up with a collection of ok-ish guitars when you could have bought just one quality guitar. but a lot of it is subjective and a high price tag does not guarantee a good guitar
Does the body and neck come with a satin finish on it? It looks like it from light reflections in the video. If so, you're going to have to sand it down significantly before any attempt to try and stain it. Luckily it doesn't take too long with power tools, but you need to make sure the finish is all gone, otherwise the stain won't take evenly (or at all in places). If you decide to shape the paddle headstock to more of a T-style shape, then you'll also need to refinish the cut edges. It would be nice to know whether its a poly or acrylic finish on it so you can use the same type of finish to ensure compatibility and no unwanted reaction. It may be easier to sand off any finish and start again rather than risk it. The fretboard material, Amaranth, is also known as Purpleheart. www.wood-database.com/purpleheart/ It's slightly harder and denser than rosewood, but will shrink a bit more over time, so it's worth keeping it well dressed with lemon oil. If the screw holes for the neck in the body don't let the screw just be pushed through, then it's worth widening them with a drill bit the same width as the screw. This ensures the screws really pull the neck down as hard and as solid as possible, without the risk that the screw can't turn any more in the body hole before the neck is pulled down fully. The supplied bridge allows for both top-loading and string-through body stringing, though if you want to go string-through, then you'll need to drill your own holes and supply your own rear string ferrules. But this is something you can do at a later date, after deciding whether the guitar is worth it. Overall it does look like a decent beginner's kit for those who like the kit as-is, and sounds pretty decent. But some of the kits with no pre-applied finish might be better for someone who wants to do their own colour scheme.
Great, but the Chinese words say nothing about the guitar. It should be thrown in the wastebasket before sending you. Now, the work belongs to you. HAHA
Hey Brent, love your downtoearth Vibe about the gear. No snobbery, much appreciated. Keep up the good way. Have fun.

Hi dude, which amp and pedals did you use in the video?
Hi at this time I would have been using a line 6 pod 2.0 but now I use the Harley Benton DNA fx GiT
For the money they are worth a try IMO however I just reviewed a Glarry and it was awesome for the same money.
chines to ang " The two 4s mean the smallest angle of meaning (the V is right, the double digitis wrong). More or less something like that :D
Do you have to pay extra to get a kit vs pre built HB Tele?
Heathkit products were like that.
No they are cheaper
Is the neck rounded or is it à flat fretboard ?
Not a flat board no
@@BrentHutchinson is it comparable to a fender neck or a PRS ?
@@GlobalAgendaFreak like a squire I would say
Burning things with a blow torch is always fun, but you already done that. How about trying a fabric finish? Someone said wallpaper finish, but I think that fabric one is cool and you have literally tons of designs to choose from.
Interesting idea
@@BrentHutchinson it could be finished with worn blues jeans ;)
Spray paint finish to the body
Agree and matching headstock!
Looks and sounds like a great kit! Do you know if they ship to the U.S.?
Yes they do. Think shipping is around $35 but you'll have to check. Good luck.
@@andywrollo2915 My wife and I were just checking them out from your link, they look very cool and the price is right! Thanks for the great review bro........ Mike (Ipswich River Guitars).
No problem it bang for buck alright
Brent love the videos. Simple question. Is it too late to learn to play at 30?
Never too late. Im an old git, still learning. Sorry to jump on your post. Get learning its lovely when you can play stuff. 👍
@@andywrollo2915 thanks pal im looking for guitar atm and dunno what to get. The thought of one of these diy ones seems cool to keep me interested
Never too late
Yeah very easy to put together and affordable
Thanks do you know if they have the jag style?
Some pretty fancy playing I say. Cant do that in The States cause everybody gets booboo lip and don't want ya around them.
Lol what's a booboo lip?
@@BrentHutchinson When the get jealous of other players and give ya the cold shoulder and you got no clue what you did.
Google Translate reckons that piece of paper says: so now you know.
What ? Lol
I have NEVER in all my many years of working with guitars, seen a plastic spacer underneath the neckplate.
Quite common
@@BrentHutchinson My many years are at least 40, so no it is not.
@@kimhansen6384 sorry you are wrong
I do like feeding the Trolls though ;) yum yum
Yes you are right it will need a good sanding down. Its sealed and very smooth. Mot sure with what though.
Great, but the Chinese words say nothing about the guitar. It should be thrown in the wastebasket before sending you. Now, the work belongs to you. HAHA
