Once while in a tea house in the periphery of Boudhanath Stupa, I overheard someone from the Tibetan marches say, “It is sweet to enjoy the lucre of the enemy.” This is the mentality that plagues many in our community.
Chinese silk, brocade and tea made the Tibetan Buddhist clergy subservient to successive Sons of Heaven ruling the Middle Kingdom, thinking in their simplistic idealism, the imperial largesse to be out of sheer faith and generosity. They were wallowing in what Gray called, where ignorance is bliss, it is folly to be wise.
