Honestly I bought it for the plot because I wanted to read fantasy and about magic essentially but when I completed book 1 , I was so disappointed! The writing seemed to be nowhere near the plot I bought it for and deviated from the main story. All the characters had the same narrative more or less to the point that it felt like a monologue. Many books introduce different writing styles to make a character unique but these characters had nothing to their personalities rather than self importance or moments of shallow rivalry. It was so abstract at times that it became absolutely impossible to follow. Read it last year and I dropped it with the last 30 pages or so as there was no hope of redemption whatsoever.

I'm currently 343 pages into it 😅 it's been such a struggle to read but I'm determined to finish it. I will not be beaten. The only reason I'd pick up the next book is if The Forum were more involved to see more of what they're about. But I'm 99% sure I won't be continuing the series.

This was a book I know I should have DNF’d, but I had fought through this story via both the audiobook and physical book and came out losing regardless of how much I wouldn’t have enjoyed this book.
And it’s mainly because of the multiple POVs. I was waiting to actually start liking most of the characters.

The second book was even worse and I couldn't force myself to read on after the first fifty pages. As you say, a total waste of time.

After reading the Broken Empire series by Mark Lawrence (which I enjoyed thoroughly) this book didnt really phase me lol. The plot like you said was interesting enough that I probably will keep going. Just wanted to say I get where your coming from with the charcters being awful people. It can make for a tough read. I do appreciate you giving the positives that were there. Ill definitely look at some more of your reviews going forward

Well thank you! And I take it then that I might not enjoy the Broken Empire series? Lol or would the Broken Empire still be worth chekcing out since you did enjoy it?

@@silverkyle Its a first person view throughout the whole trilogy and its main character is worse than Callum if that says anything lol. I will say that Mark Lawrence wrote it that way because the trilogy takes place in a larger universe and his other trilogies have much more enjoyable characters.

Strong strong feelings on this one. I have to admit I laughed pretty hard pretty hard when you said you’re picturing that one dude getting stabbed and spit on lol. Funny enough I was actually looking at this at indigo yesterday? Well it was atlas something, may have been the second one.

I actually really enjoyed the characters, I kinda like when people hate each other but have to get along.
But when Libby killed Nico that did make me sad

It just gets worse as the book goes on. You 100% made the right decision. Glad I'm not the only one who felt this way!

I read one book, and I completely disagree. It's not just the characters-though them too-but also a boring and unclear magic system with no rules, overly exaggerated. The plot is dull, with nothing happening until the final chapter. This is a book written without thought, without editing, and it's sad that such garbage succeeds and gets credit. Even the character illustrations scattered throughout the book weren’t done properly because you can’t tell who’s who. Honestly? I just don’t care.
