I agree, I think it's a natural evolution of the tech. If one could use it to control the ship, report back ship messages, and have conversations with, that would be excellent.

The insanely chipper voice would drive me mental. First thing I'd do would be to engineer a tactical "just the facts" type interaction, with maximum information in minimum time.
"Give me trip details to Hutton Orbital from current location, with optimal jumps to refuelable stars."
"Processing... Alpha Centauri achievable in 17 jumps, 8 refuelable stars en route. Estimated 90 minute supercruise time for final approach to Hutton Orbital."
    "Plot and execute."
"Course set. Friendship drive ready on your mark."

Perfectly achievable with custom instructions, or even briefing the AI beforehand! When this kind of things does get executed in games, it will be very easy for the user to customise the response style to their liking.

Really cool, although the "ChatGPT regurgitates what you said with more words" schtick gets a bit irritating.
For example, you flounder about using super cruise or not and then decide not to because you are getting close to the station and then voice goes on about using it or not then doesn't end up actually deciding and giving any advice and says "whatever you decide we'll be there soon". So you flounder about super cruise and being close to the station and then the voice flounders about super cruise and getting close to the station.
Too verbose for me personally but I assume that is something you could attempt to tame with some additional initial parameters in ChatGPT. In my time with LLMs they tend to fall back into a standard communication format with enough input even when you've instructed them to not go back to that format.
Did you give it any instructions on how much commentary or feedback to give you?

    • @the_underearth6419

I agree with all your points, and yes, when it starts stating and restating the obvious it's a little annoying. This video serves as a concept for what such an AI could be onboard, and it would be wonderful if it were possible to integrate conversation with functionality.
To answer your question, I didn't give it instructions on how much commentary or feedback to give. I only said, "I'm going to make a UA-cam video for this, so please keep it sounding professional" and I think she pretty much adhered to that. Of course, I could have many other things too, and as you imply, the functionality for such customisation is there.

It might be neat to get this integrated so you could be like “Archer, request docking”. I use Archer as my COVAS. Or have it pay attention or summarize Galnet. Or set course/route to places so you don’t have to navigate the map in VR. Or maybe scrub some of the ED sites for part locations or jobs. That way you don’t have to tab out or grab a tablet while playing to look up.
Maybe put a call in to the Fuel Rats

Voice Attack works ok interactive chit-chat is limited but it can pretty much fly the ship for you,
I especially like the Kate profile and if you have different profiles loaded on your ship they can talk to one another that can be interesting.
But if they could incorporate this into Voice Attack then this would be cool to have such an interactive experience.

  • @bystander85

I was using ChatGPT in a similar way, having it roleplay as my ship's AI companion but using it to help me learn how to play the game. I've yet to get Voice Attack to work reliably, the Windows STT engine is absolutely terrible and no matter how much I train it, it misunderstands me and things always seem buggy. I would love to see a ChatGPT backed alternative with an action inference engine to automate tasks. It's definitely possible.

At this early point in time its function is little more than companionship. And I am sure that, in 3300 or whenever Elite is set happens, AIs [or AGIs] onboard will be a reality and will be able to do all the things you describe. For now, it would be great if game companies could integrated conversational voice with functionality. As some in the comments have already said, it shouldn't be too hard for them to do that.

Very verbose with perhaps too warm of an affect. I'd love to see a engineered prompt to get it to more curtly repeat certain commands -- maybe more perfunctory or military-style responses. Also it's feeding off your voice alone, it seems. Would be sick if there were an API to funnel some prompts to it. Great demo, however. Thanks for the vid.

The great thing is that ChatGPT AVM is customisable like that. So before recording this demo I asked it to be professional and neutral, though I could have, in theory, asked for more military-style responses. If such a thing were ever integrated into the game [or other games, and it's certainly doable], the mode of responses - and voice - could be tailored per user.

LLMs tend to reflect what you give them back at you, unless you ask it very specific questions that lend themselves to dry factual responses or you avoid giving it hints about what you are thinking.
They default to something akin to active listening. So when you say something to them, they tend to paraphrase that back at you.
I'm not sure how useful that might be for game play. If you narrate your gaming like a stream, the LLM is probably going to narrate back at you.
If you, instead, have a conversation with it, you'll probably get more interesting responses.

@@samgordon9756 Yes indeed, as I've said above [and now in the description], one thing I could have done was ask it about system maps or even asteroid base locations.
