Funny thing to note in lore. As Custodes are picked at a young age, everything about them, including personality gets tweaked to suit desired effect. So, if custodian behaves and acts like a pompous know it all, it is because someone specifically wanted to make him that way.

Tweaked is the key word there. It's just as likely that such traits are just the result of predispositions they didn't see/see the need to alter or counteract, or for that matter experiences much later in life

When I was a custodian I tried to tell my job about the all the effort the Emperor put into me and that I was his voice, and they said "Who is the Emperor and why is the janitor talking about him?"
They are just jealous about how perfect you are

I like the idea of Custodes not only being guards, but actual custodians of the Imperial Palace as well. I mean, someone has to polish all that gold, after all.
A really cool aspect about the Blood Games is that it’s origins are explained in the Alpharius book. Alpharius wants to test the custodians and prove a point so he tries to assassinate the emperor only to be stopped at the last minute by Valdor who he then teams up with to create the blood games and improve the security of the imperial palace to protect the emperor
I find it funny that the emperor HATES the blood games but sees it as a necessary evil and he never holds it against any of the custodians that get close enough to land a blow against him

One thing to note about Custodes is that they have a stronger sense of identity and individuality unlike Space Marines that have most of their personality burned away by way of strict mental conditioning. When a Custodes gets a small bit of free time for themselves they actually have hobbies which is adorable for an 8ft tall demigod.
Have you ever imagined a Custodes just having a cat cafe somewhere in an abandoned wing of the Imperial Palace? I feel like somebody needs to just write that into the cannon, I mean we had a bead on where the Mona Lisa was pre heresy, we also had Fulgrim get tortured in a BDSM session by his sons so a Custodes cat cafe with loads of Fantastic Felines.

You may only need like 10 custodians, but writing their full names would see you die of old age.
Here is my favorite anecdote about the Custodian. A Space Marine with all of his enhancement and armor can fight nonstop (i.e. no rest, food etc.,) for about 4 to 6 weeks. A Custodian can do the same thing for about a CENTURY!

I only hate the two Rare custodian L's:
1) Being decimated by harlequins cause the author thought they were some random ass astartes or infantry unit
2) Horus being able to turn 50 of them to chaos when the emperor came for his ass on his ship (a custodian fighting beside the emperor himself should never fall to chaos, given that their will is definitely stronger than that of a grey knight)

Harlequuins are the custodes of Eldar. Humans aren't beyond end all of the galaxy my dude. It wasn't Horus it was the CHAOS GODS THEMSELVES. I don't care how awesome they are. If one of the 4 appears they sure as fuck will get corrupted.

One of my favorites things about the Custodes is the fact they're basically just perfect humans, whereas Space Marines are made to be perfect soldiers. The Astartes look weird, blocky and kind of goofy and act in a very inhuman manner, but the Custodes are just a human scaled up and perfected. I imagine if the Emperor succeeded in his plans, given enough time, he would of made every human to the level of the Custodes.
Also, I know Custodes are made to be unshackably loyal to the Emperor and the Imperium but I've always liked the idea of a Custodian somehow ending up as the king of a planet of primitive xenos far from the Imperiums borders. Don't know how such a thing could happen, but I imagine the hand wavey answer of "warp fuckery" could suffice. I've always liked the trope of a species being lead by a person of a different species, especially when that person is a human. The Goblin King from the Labyrinth, the Overlord (titular), Saruman from Lord of the Rings and other examples. I think, given 40K's scale, they could allow such a story to exist. It would make for a nice contrast, a story of a powerful human acting as a protector over a race of aliens instead of wanting to purge them like most of the Imperium.
Warhammer is so big,that could totally happen. Write it yourself! It could be fun.
a retired custode, getting lost and finding one forgotten xeno subject species or abhuman species and remembering that the emperor ordered the crusade to not harm them is the most likely way that turns out.

It is alot more likely they'd do it with abhumans though.
@@user-fu2tx9hp4rthere were actually a lot of Xenos sanctioned and basically told "they were one of the good ones" during the Great Crusade. Xenophobia beyond logic is a comparatively recent development, so it'd still work I think.
My first army is Custodes, just started painting them a few months ago. Imagine my surprise when I painted my first Sister of Silence after going through two squads of Wardens.
"Oh. This is how easy it is to paint normal troops."
I had the same experience when painting my combat patrol ( also is my first army). Only difference is that I painted the sisters first. I was shocked by the difficulty jump when I started painting my first custodian guard.

Custodes have some really cool sub factions i love the emissaries Imperatus since big e cant talk he speaks to custodes in there meditation so they inact his will. when big e speaks to them they were the sheild host who went to help drop off the primaris marines after they were filled with the spirt of the emperor to help Guilliman
I think the shadowkeepers or solar watch have such good paint schemes vs the regular red and gold
They're so perfect they can't clown around.
That's more a flaw than a sign of perfection, the best humans should be able clown at least on par with the harlequins and show them that they are not so superior after all.
I fucking love Custodes. One of the coolest things I've heard in 40k is that when space marines watch the custodes fight it makes them physically uncomfortable because the space marines are so hard-coded to work as a team they can't handle seeing a little one-man army and it makes them feel the closest thing they can feel to fear. That is easily one of the most badass things I've ever heard. The way the battles are described in the Watchers of the Throne series make everything they do seem so completely effortless. My god they are awesome!
There's an old excerpt of a merc turned soldier from the unification wars era. He said "that level of raw naked power, it was unfair..." after seeing a custodian kill a whole squad of humans in a few seconds then kick over an entire tank and tear it open

The greatest lore master in existence
I'm one of the people who loved Master of Mankind. Custodes in battle are utterly terrifying. Highly recommend the Watchers of the Throne series (wish it were a trilogy) if you haven't already read it. Follows a Custodes, a Sister of Silence, and a deputy to the High Lords of Terra at the moment when the cicatrix maledictum rips open, demons invade Terra, and Guilliman shows up on the moon. The Vaults of Terra series isn't as good, but the first book features Custodes and does a good job with their depiction. When the main character, an inquisitor, meets them, he's shocked because they're so rarely seen they're considered a myth. I hadn't considered that even an inquisitor wouldn't necessarily be privy to the fact that they exist. The book also takes you *deep* within the palace.
I loved, LOVED, the intro for the custodian.
Revus, the captain of the Inquisitor's retinue, was investigating something and got caught by some Arbites. After knocking them out (cause there's no sense in killing loyal humans) he leaps into an elevator and said elevator's roof gets *ripped off*.
Revus looks up and says "Oh... shit..." considering it's the only swear word in the book...
Keep in mind,
Astartes fight like dogs. In packs.
Custodes fight like Lions. A bunch of Lions. Individuals together, but still singular in their direction.
That was old lore against one of Lorgars sons, now after Master of Mankind they're just better at everything in such a way that 5 custodes can fight an entire chapter in an equal way and protect themselves from threats the other isn't even aware was a threat in the first place

Fun fact custodes don’t have two hearts like a astartes.
They are not glorified space marines but more akin too humanity truly perfected in the emperors image.
Another interesting fact the blood games go on for months if not years a custodian isn’t just dropped outside the palace with iarmor on he’s dropped on the other side of Terra no armor and has to make his way back moving undetected through Terra’s seedy underground to throw off any from any spies.

Custodes are quite possibly one of my favorite factions in the setting. I love that they exist as a proof-of-concept for the Emperor's vision for humanity, a teaser trailer or rough sketch for how mankind can become like unto gods.
They are not intended to solely be weapons, though they excel at that as well. I love that they are philosophers, diplomats, historians, etc, because they are the Emperor's bodyguards and companions.
Also, great note on power scaling. While I love alot of ADB's writing, he shouldn't be let anywhere near within 100 yards of anything loyalist. From what I have gathered, his daddy issues prevent him from doing them any justice, continuity be damned. Similarly...Abnett. Just...Abnett.
The dude is the M Night Shyamalan of Warhammer, will just throw things in the for the twist.
Final bit to tie into that: The Horus Heresy Novels have definitely helped the power creep along and the power yoyoing. One minute, Angron is surviving a Titan stepping on him and the next Guilliman is almost unalived by a squad of goober marines.
Magnus probably has it the worst internally. One minute he singlehanded destroys Eldar Titans and creates a forcefield capable of holding off the sustained barrage of an entire Iron Warriors Grand Company while having a tense dialogue with Pertuabo. The next, Doggo Russ and Vulkan are one on oneing him.
I love me some Vulkan, but how that went down was...a thing.
TLDR: Yeah, some things are more consistent than others but drift happens over time. Hell, just look at the Custodes. They went from "almost marines" and "fight like lions" to each one being head and shoulders above all but the greatest of Astartes Champions and even giving Primarchs trouble while being SUPREMELY coordinated as units. The second part made way more sense, because as bodyguards you would have to work like that.
Ehhhh. They are slaves to Big E though. Literally incapable of calling him on his bullshit. Unless I have free will like Kitten I rather not to be one 😂😅

5 seconds in and already a jojo reference lol
There are a billion lore things to gush over here, and probably a massive debate to be had about Norn Emissaries and clowns, but rather than poke that beehive or author a lore rabbit-hole, I feel compelled to bring any new fans present into contact with one of the best series of fan animation that have ever been produced.
The Adeptus Custodes have the honor of being featured prominently in "If The Emperor Had A Text-To-Speech Device", a non-canon fan work made by a team of people now referred to as "Ogre Poppenang" and released by Alfabusa on his channel, "Bruva Alfabusa". The main characters, apart from Big E himself, overwhelmingly consist of Custodians and returned Primarchs. Since scenes from TTS were often based on actual battles on the Warhammer 40K (9th Edition predominantly, IIRC) tabletop, Custodians were much squishier in TTS than in lore (because a lore-accurate army of Custodes would instantly destroy any illusion of game balance, tabletop Custodes are strong but nerfed SEVERELY to ensure that they aren't just instant win tickets. They can't just have a single squad of Custodes balanced to the points cost and power of an entire army either, because otherwise, nobody would do anything but buy like four Custodian models to complete an army, and they still need their model sales to make profit).
Thus, keep in mind that Custodians are generally much more powerful, competent, and mature than TTS makes them out to be... TTS was plenty hilarious and took many liberties to deliver a better end result, and we love them for that, even if it did lead to some lore deviations. Most of those deviations were hilarious (e.g. Kaldor Draigo being portrayed as a godlike madman due to Warp exposure, the Engine of Woes being a particularly meme-worthy model of modern day car, Corvus Corax doing nothing for 10,000 years but compose Gothic poetry while stuck in said car, and taking the whole "Custodians took off their golden armor in their grief and shame" to a whole other level, even though they've been retconned to only swap the color of their fabric accessories), and some helped drive the plot or allow for more control of the story! I can't say too much, for fear of spoiling things.
TTS is set pre-13th Black Crusade and features the Emperor regaining the ability to command his Imperium and learn of it's present situation (that disgusts and disappoints him in many ways). The art style of TTS is deceptively simple, and likely started simple... but over time, became a massive undertaking to retain the style and identity of the series while increasing the quality. Voice acting is amazing and largely done in-house by the group of friends who created the series. The series may not be suitable for young audiences, but is definitely worth checking out if you are mature!
After GW's infamous crackdown on fan animations and artists, Alfabusa and friends stopped making Warhammer content, rebranded to the aforementioned Ogre Poppenang, and now produce similar format content in the World of Darkness and Half-Life settings ("Hunter: The Parenting" and "Half-Life: Zero Viscosity" respectively). Text-To-Speech is on infinite hiatus, waiting until GW deals with the fact that curb-stomping fan works in order to leave Warhammer+ as the only player in the Warhammer content niche was a horrible idea and repeals the ban on fan animations.

Funny that old Uriel is mentioned, while I was reading swords of calth(book 7), I noticed a few changes about him - for one, he had a bionic eye in book 6, yet here he both his bio eyes, and he started in gravis rather than tacticus armor, ofc, he gets it in the end(so model matches). And his 2nd Pasanius, while remains firstborn, got his own tacticus armor (scaled up to his massive frame).
Just the idea that the dimwitted and friendly Ogryn you've been traveling with, gets a Vox notification, stands up straight, ends the fight he's in if you were in the middle of one by himself, and then leaves without saying a word to you or your other companions, is just funny to me.
Custodes have been my main army for years, I painted them based on some fanart of Artorias from Dark Souls as a Custodian. I really recommend them for beginners, they're relatively affordable, easy to make look good, and they have strong base stats without much in the way of rules bloat, kinda the complete opposite of the Mechanicus in that way
I have a custodes fan made character who is basically what happens when a custodes decides he's to small. So, he stands roughly 50% taller, and is way bulkier than the other custodes to the point where they were able to fit weapons systems into his armor like shoulder mounted missile launchers, wrist mounted plasma weapons, and much more. During training they put blocks of ceramite on his back to add even more weight. They call his the titan of tera and spends most of his time running around the galaxy putting out as many fires as he can by dropping on them from orbit, and he doesn't use a drop pod he straight up just hops out just outside of the atmosphere and drops the entire way to the surface with nothing but his weapons and power armor.
Can't believe Alpha Legion used to have Golden Armor...
So with each piece of their armour ..an artisan could spend his whole life creating just one part ...
I think I was expecting more when I first read about custodians. One book had a custode dead from a lascannon and in another 2 space marines jumped on one and blew themselves up. Kinda imagined them more invincible
Isn't it makes better? Primarchs don't invincible too,and can be harmed by enough power,so why custodes can't?

I got their Xmas box last year and plan on picking up the combat patrol to bring it up to a full 2k list. Then The plan is build it all and get it all painted in one big batch. I’ve been building up a stockpile of gold spray primer for when that day arrives.

As a bananna boi player myself, in 9thed i would weep in the shooting phase as 1/4 of my like 18 guys died. But then, when my charge phase came the joy in my heart as i would procced to evaporate 3/4 of a Votan army killing everything i could get in range of and then spending the next two turn chasing and mopping up the rest as the Sisters just held OBJ's
When I got into Warhammer40,000 a couple years ago, the first thing I drilled into my head, THE #1 RULE… Is the Rule of Cool.
So now I have a Custodes and Dark Angel army I’m in the middle of putting together and painting.
