  • This gameplay tutorial for Mechwarrior Online shows you how to utilize your Mech to it's best extent. I'll give you a rundown of the build and what it is made for and show you the actual combat role in two games on the battlefield. Today we talk about the PPC nerf/buff and the current MWO patch notes.
    Mechwarrior Online is a competitive first person shooter where you build and pilot massive Mechs and prove yourself on the battlefield. The game is based on the Battletech franchise, which originally was a science fiction tabletop game in the 80s. Big part of the game is configuring your loadout and find the best match of missile, ballistic and energy weapons for your playstyle. The weapon variety ranges from devastating autocannons over particle projectors to deadly arrays of laser beams. On the battlefield your team of 12 Mechwarriors fight the enemies on rather small arena-type maps. Teamwork is crucial here because a single Mech does not survive long if it steps in front a full firing line. Communication and teamwork is key on your journey to glory and victory.

    The increased cooldown will take getting used to. In my Blackjack I would listen to the sound of the PPC resetting, now the sound does not align with the cooldown time. They will need to fix that.

    This build went from highest damage ever at 1766 to around 700 damage even if he gets used to it we're talking like 1,200 damage. I'm not happy with the patch the more I play the more I seem to remember why I keep quitting this game. But I always love watching Baradul!

      I did two rounds of 1000ish damage with four CERPPCs this patch, but I'm a substantially worse player than Baradul.

      Had a 816 dmg round in my 2 ppc adder today. Enemy team kind of milled around in front of me, so i was shooting constantly, but still shows it is doable. With the increased splash as well, Clan ERPPCs are doing 18 damage now so its still some big numbers on torso hits. I don't ever like my beloved PPC's being nerfed, but at least it was like a sideways one rather than a full out nerf

    Long toms bring back memories...those turrets shredded my mechs in mech commander.

      I feel like the Rockets are the poorer substitute for the Long Tom. Your mech could carry one and that was it. Now, you could load up on rocket pack (assuming missile hardpoints) and have a one-shot for tons of damage.

      Totally not happy with the change in PPCs. Agree fully with Bara. Not it penalises people learning to use PPCs and gives maximum benefit to those who are masters at it

      no kidding. +2secs is +50% cooldown!!! thats a huge change, the added damage does not make up for the loss dps

    I am noticing how much weirdly cooler ppcs are in the new patch. Baradul didnt even cook himself in this video. yes dmg and heat are up but the heat per second is down with longer cooldowns.

      yes, I would consider this change more of a buff that reinforces pop-tart/sniping. +20% damage, +7%heat, +40%cooldown means better heat efficiency, less face time, more pinpoint. Should consider adding an extra PPC for the typical builds - what would be a good heavy for a 4X erppc build?

    Lumping the snub nose in with the rest of the PPC's really wrecked its purpose and ability. Why PGI did this makes no sense.

      I agree, the increased cooldown time really hurts. I have been playing a Javelin with a Snub and 3 ER Smalls, and only getting roughly 1.5ish shots per pass is painful (especially because my aim isn't the best). I am hoping that they'll fix it in the next patch, and I'm confident enough to say they'll probably be tweaking it again.

    Shoot the stars, they are ofc UAVs as well! Long Toms, the only missile-weapon I could use to any real effect back in the day...always forgot to watch the cooldown for LRM and I brawled with ERLL back then ;)

    I feel like the changes to PPCs are good for very standoffish and passive players but bad for more aggressive players that are likely to brawl with them. Now, I think the PPCs being in certain builds (like PPC LB 10 builds) are still fine because the LBs are still good for cool down.

      The irony of nascar was that it forced scared and timid players to maneuver lest they get run over by the enemies. Now these same players have an incentive to stand back and peek and pole with PPCs forcing games to be standoffish and slow. Its really easy to underrun these guys, but for that you need people to push decisively and most players are scared of that. Its a strange situation now. Honestly if I had to pick I'd go with nascar over long range peeking duels. We will see how this eveolves going forward. I hope we dont get sniper-meta though.

    The cooldown really DOES mess with pilots now. I totally felt the same way when I was trying out the VGL. Accidentally overheating, thinking my weapons were ready when they werent, it just felt like an unequal trade off for 2 damage.

    I enjoy playing fast lights with one or two erppcs now. Since I am always running anyway, I do not think the cool down nerf hurts as badly. The damage buff has improved my Spider-5d match score, for instance, and as we all know it is not easy getting things done in a 5d these days!

    IS ppc section didn't need that much increase in cooldown. They already lack the splash damage.

    There was absolutely no need for almost all of the weapon/gear changes that were made. They need to roll those back ASAP.

    Well, time to switch out the PPC's for ER Large or Pulse Larges and sink points out of velocity and into cooldown /heat management. Nothing like chain firing 5-6 LL's at a target to piss him off.
    C ERLL 10.75 dmg, 11.8 heat and 4sec cooldown. With enough heat sinks / heat containment, I can fire 3 times for 32.25 Damage in the same time it takes for 2 C ER PPC shots at 12 dmg, and 7 sec cool down regardless of heat.
    better dps / heat & cooldown IMO

    What I want to know is why light ppcs and light gauss rifles got a 4 second cooldown nerf instead of the 2 seconds the heavier ones got.
    EDIT: A little math says for standard PPCs damage per shot increased by 20% but rate of fire decreased by 33.3%, so it's a net loss of about 20% of your dps.

    PGI changed the cooldown but not the audio que for it... thats why the muscle memory was kicking in so hard. The wah wah wah wah sound wqas still timed for the old cooldown... poor attention to nerf details

      Those are my favorite weapons. Honestly I don't know if I'll play again unless they change it back. There was no need for almost any of the adjustments they made.

    I am reminded of Warframe's Daikyu. The doubled the firing rate so it drew a lot quicker, but also dropped 300 points off the base damage, which ultimately lost me 800 points of damage. Maxed out 4 Forma Daikyus with headshots were still lethal, but at base it was now just a slightly stronger Paris.

    While the cooldown does feel a little long, and the sound cue needs to be updated to match it, there really weren't many points where a faster cooldown would have mattered in these two matches. It mostly only came up when you were going in to brawl. It looks like the change was designed to encourage the use of PPCs as more of a sniper weapon, and you can definitely see that part working as intended here.

    To be honest I like the new changes. PPCs are supposed to be Sniper Weapons (with the exception of Snub) and for a Sniper weapon, they used to shoot WAAAAY too often. The changes make it so that each shot matters a lot more for them now, but they are not as rapid fire. The fact that they did not just up the damage but the Velocity as well, emphasizes that aspect. Which means that if a Close Range build mech manages to get in range with a Sniper. The sniper looses, cause you dont win a CQC fight against a Shotgun with a Sniper Rifle. Or you should not at anyrate. But if you stay at range, you are truly devastating.

    The cooldown is low, but now you can do 18 damage with a Clan ERPPC, meaning that hitting two does 32 pinpoint and 12 splash, heating all four grants a total of 64 pinpoint and 24 splash.
    88 damage at 800 meters+ is pretty good IMO

    Its rather annoying that other than on the clan side, ton for ton and heat for heat, the LPL out performs the ppc family. The cooldown is now double an lpl salvos, meaning that your 2 extra damage on the first shot are eclipsed by the lpl's second shot, grossing 20 damage vs 12. The cycle time and nature of how the lpl works means its a very forgiving weapon to get at least some damage with, even on a missed shot. Also RIP 7 LPPC chaingun builds.

    It's generally better for poptarters. Can push out more dmg every time you expose yourself to return fire. Totally useless for brawls now (not that it was good anyway...) with the lowered dps so get some backup weapons for that or always stick to team mates who are willing to help you out with the pesky lights that may want to push you. In short position yourself where they can't reach you and comfortably can engage your jetpacks around every 7 seconds. No need for active gameplay anymore. 😔

    They dps isn't maintained even if you land every single shot.. You're generally getting only 2 additional dmg but the c/d is being increased from 5 to 7 which is a 40% c/d nerf for only a 20% dmg buff... It leads to a total 15% dps hit from 2dps on avg to 1.71...

    I like player a mech with 4 plus light PPC's does not really do a lot of damage but feels great as you chain fire these puppy's :)

    I wonder if this nerf will encourage mixed loadouts. Where you can't just pack 3-4 PPCs in your mech, you just carry one or two for sudden bursts of pinpoint damage, but you carry lasers or autocannons for constant DPS. I don't think it will work with autocannons though, those are usually too heavy. I don't think it's a good idea to make sniper platforms that pack Gauss Rifles and PPCs either, GRs take a long time to fire. Besides, the "shot velocities" don't really line up well enough to use both of them unless you're fighting a sitting duck.
    Most likely they'll just tone down the nerfs.

    Talking about long Toms. I think they should consider adding thunderbolt missiles into the game. This would be more realizeable then longtoma in terms of game Balance. Also i would love to shoot some really big boys at the enemy

    Some are too hot with the old cooldown to spam fire, but we will see with this rebalance

    DPS with shorter cool down also means you need to fire every time it is ready to maintain the DPS.

      True, but irrelevant. Not only do longer cool downs make it more difficult to position and give you wider windows of vulnerability, but missing is a lot more punishing. If you can fire three times in a given period, but miss one of your shots, your DPS goes down the toilet. On the other hand if you can fire five times in a given period, but miss one of your shots, you’re relatively ok.

      @@nekekaminger You also have to think about it from the other end. If you see a guy with PPCs, and you're running a bunch of SRMs, pushing him is suddenly way easier, because if he misses even a single shot, you basically get free damage on him. That nerf is enough to give others an extra chance to alpha you. It's a bad change to systems that already had some of, if not the longest cooldowns in the game.

      @@nekekaminger You only miss one shot in both cases, and if that's as many shots as you can make in a given time period, that's what you're stuck with. The accuracy isn't the problem. The cooldown is.

      @@timtarbet4594 but you won't just do 3 shots per game. Assuming that the average DPS is the same (I haven't actually done the math on that since I don't actively play anymore) a longer cool down is no inherent disadvantage. Take a look at the opposite scenario, you get a chance to hit an opponent for half a second before they get back to cover and you manage to get two PPC hits in. There's simply no way you could have applied the same amount of damage with a faster firing weapon with the same DPS. It all depends on your play style.

    New patch and my Vapor Eagle 1 with 3x C-ER PPC I can manage the heat, no more alpha or you take willingly the heat damage, but I can live with it, but the cool down kills it for me... I have tried my build with many cool down nodes as possible but the cool down is high and for my play style it's bad... so my PPC Vapor Eagle stays in the garage until something changes for the better...

    Okay, so he doesn't like the patch. Fair. But Baradul did just prove that a mech most affected by the changes is still quite useful.

      CERPPCs are the weapon most benefited by the changes by already supporting the high cooldown PPFLD poke/poptart playstyle, while also being the most efficient PPC in general. In fact, for strictly poptarting these changes are probably a net improvement since you have longer downtime between shots anyway so you lose very little but gain some additional damage.
      The real pain point is -every other PPC variant-.

      This is Baradul. He can make anything useful. He consistently gets over 600 damage in even the most meme-worthy gimmick builds. His performance is not a great indicator for how good something will be for the average player.

    This patch makes PPCs very bad for middling players like me.
    The nerf also makes PPCs less effective in negating ECM.

      I suppose it depends on the playstyle. But brawling took a very heavy hit with this, and a lot of the shorter-range builds definitely got hurt--on the other hand, poptarter supremacy is back, so... yay?

    Overall percentage DPM changes to PPC's:-
    PPC, ER PPC, Snubnose PPC - -10% (133.3 -> 120)
    Light PPC -~14% (66.6 -> 57.6)
    Heavy PPC 20% (180 -> 145.7)
    Clan ER PPC 15% (120 -> 102.8)
    So yeah, this is if every shot hits the mark. Damage will be massively lowered overall now, and that's before having to take into account heat.

      The snub CD no longer aligns with the AC20's, which was a popular synergy that gave both weapons a better lease on life.

    If you mix omnipods do you still get the benefits of their individual quirks or do they all have to be of the same model before the quirks are applied ?

      Mixing does not give you the benefits. However some omnipods have minor bonuses that apply during a mixed build. Those are listed in teal and are usually structure or armor bonuses.

    Hey Baradul in my opinion ppc should stay how they were before patch, some setup now are less efficient cause of heat and longer cooldown, everyone misses and ofc now its less forgiving but what I cant't stand is the higher heat generation. Anyhow can I ask you something the sounds of weapons in your video are really different from what I normally hear when I'm playing and compared to other's videos. Are you using a mod or something cause honestly I prefer yours...

    They should have made it 15 dmg with 5 dmg splash with that kind of cool down. Light mechs will absolutely destroy you now if you run PPCs.

      Due the fact that the build never gets the overheat threshold before patch and now the general PPC DPS is lower, it's mean that the build is simply worse.
