I actually like Fetch as the title because it’s a show with a dog for a host, and dogs tend to fetch stuff. Also, it’s a scavenger hunt show, so the dog is telling the contestants to “fetch” him stuff, which is backwards and therefore subversive to how the act normally goes.

Just realized how cool of a title "The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy" is.
Like it's obviously a variant of the "X and Y" titles, but labeling it as the "grim adventures" sets a great kind of mood before going into the show, while also being a pun off of Grim the character

3:12 You would have a field day with Light novel titles. Given most of them have to stand out immediately in the usual japanese website were most of them come from. A LOT OF THEM basically have their synopsis as a title. And sometimes when they get imported to outside of japan, the translations mercifully just shorten the titles (and even then, the original japanese fandom of those lightnovels prefer to sometimes just call the light novel by a shorter nickname)

Though from that tradition of ridiculous and long light novel titles, you also have "Is it wrong to try to pick up girls in the Dungeon?", or Danmachi. The question is just so odd you have to check it out, and the story delivers exactly what you'd expect: and RPG-style fantasy with a harem element.
Also, the anime is better, btw. Not hearing Bell's thoughts on everything makes the story more bearable.

    • @YamatoFukkatsu
      @YamatoFukkatsu 2 роки тому +7

And let's not forget how some of them just seem to pile even more words onto their already wordy title just for the sake of it. For instance, Yu-shibu, which has the full title of "Yuusha ni Narenakatta Ore wa Shibushibu Shuushoku wo Ketsui Shimashita" (I Couldn't Become a Hero, So I Reluctantly Decided to Get a Job). If you think about it, even if you wanted to go with such a descriptive title, was the "Shibushibu" (Reluctantly) part really all that necessary? Though ironically, that particular word also happens to be one of the only parts that's used in the shortened version.
As an aside, there's also something to be said about the amusing way some of these light novel titles get shortened. I mean, you'd be pretty hard-pressed to figure out how the hell "Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai" can turn into "Haganai" if you didn't know a lick of Japanese (and moreso how "wa" is actually written in Japanese).

I also have a bit of peeve with cartoon titles named for the protagonist(s), but it usually depends on the show.

I still think the title works, at least functionally. One, Bojack is still the main “main character” of the five. And two arguably even the other characters’ arcs and stories are in some way still tied to Bojack. PC is Bojack’s agent and on-again-off-again lover, and her story is realizing that do in part to her relationship she wasted her life, and wanting to take control again. Diane ghost-writing Bojack’s novel is what kicks off the show

A good name gives you enough to be interested and remember it. "The Magic School Bus" gives you pretty much everything you need to know about the show. "Darkwing Duck" gives you a little less, but as soon as you've seen anything at all from the show, you understand the title and will remember it. "Super Robot Monkey Team Hyperforce Go!" is a lot of words, and it isn't hard to guess at what a *few* of them mean for the show, but is anybody that hasn't seen it actually going to know what the heck that show is going to be? Curiosity got the better of me, and I looked up "Kissyfur" and "Lolirock" on Wikipedia. Kissyfur is a circus bear and his father who leave the circus after a train wreck to live in the wild. Given that the pilot episode opens with Mama Bear being taken away in a casket, and the train conductor almost certainly dying in the wreck, it seemed like it had it's moments. Lolirock is a French magical girls show; skimming the article I didn't see anything sketchy about it besides the title. It did have a couple of MLP alums in the English dub, for what it's worth.

A simple title I think is perfect is The Mandalorian. If you know Star Wars lore, you know the mandalorians, so the title immediately tells you what to expect. Then there's the use of "the". There are many mandalorians in SW lore, but they're just A mandalorian. This show is about THE mandalorian, the one that will set themselves apart from all the others. And finally, there's the suprise twist in expectations that most people don't even realize is there. Baby Yoda love blew up fast, everyone knew he was in the show and the mandalorian was protecting him, but try to think about it before the show aired. Mandalorians are all about war, "weapons are their religion" and all that, so you'd expect the show to be nonstop action and shootouts of a one man army taking on the galaxy. But the first episode ends with subverting that, the target he was going for and having shootouts about isn't some other action star, signaling the inevitable but epic final battle in the finale. It's a child, and suddenly the Mandalorian is no longer about the mandalorian, it's about someone that lost it all as a kid offering help to another kid who lost it all.
Also, Over the Garden Wall is a terrible title, especially with the character designs. I thought it was a dumb cartoon about gnomes leaving their garden before I gave it a try.

Like Power Rangers would change up the name to fit theme or something crucial in each season, power rangers Zeo was about the new power source the rangers would take on after the original powers were destroyed, Lost Galaxy was about exploring the galaxy around the series, S.P.D was about the new space police space patrol delta and there adventures, the worst seasons had some of the tittles that came out of nowhere and didn't fit the theme of the show like operation overdrive or “Super Mega Force”.

as for anime, you tend to get mostly good titles as long as you arent getting an overly wordy one. even on the rare occasion of character name titles, if you know a naruto in real life, it was probably the result of someone naming their son after the character. you also have "jojo's bizarre adventure", which immediately intriguing because of how weird the word choice is of "bizarre". translated titles usually do a good job or are at worst a direct translation.
sometimes the title is in english as well, like dr. stone or spy x family or hunter x hunter. speaking of which, dr. stone is both an apt title and a "roll credits" moment later on in the story, and if you pretend the x isn't there in the others it explains what the show is about without saying too much. hunter x hunter is also a wordplay title, gon wants to become a hunter to hunt down his father, who is also a hunter, making him a hunter hunter. now, anime can have subtitles too, but you usually forgo them in casual discussion. code geass: lelouch of the rebellion is just shortened to code geass, which is a decent title. demon slayer is about slaying demons, food wars is about cooking competitions, etc. sometimes you do lose stuff in translation. haikyuu is apparently derived from the kanji, so in those cases you cant really blame anyone. that, and most anime watchers arent browing based on title alone, mostly the reception.
i dont mind long titles for anime, though. sometimes you get funny ones like "science fell in love so i tried to prove it", which is intriguing based on how silly it sounds.

I don't like live action shows but there are a few I can name with the characters name in the title Sam and Cat, The Sopranos, House M.D., FRED, Icarly, Nurse Jackie, and Dexter. There are more Live Action shows then Animation so I think people just forget live action shows faster then animation. But overshadowing can be another factor. Live action also has more constraints with it's titles because there are more of them so you have to get creative with the titles. Like if your gonna make a Zombie game, movie, show or book in the 2010's they had to get creative so we got titles like Left for Dead, The Walking Dead, CoD: Nazi Zombies, 28 Days Later, Dead Snow and Resident Evil (though this one is older in fairness). But if your making the only animated show about an anthropomorphic horseman in Hollywood you don't really need to think of a pop out titles to separate it from all the other anthro horseman shows. Titles are important to an extent and do have an effect. I remember people not giving MLP:FIM a chance because of it's title or bronies not wanting to say the title.

This was a very enjoyable video! It's an interesting topic to think of. There's certainly a lot you can glean from an interesting title alone; there are some shows I can just tell are not for me based on their titles alone (like the random words titles.) Also, Uncle Grandpa is that show that I absolutely refuse to watch based on the title alone.
A show I personally think has a great title that made me immediately intrigued to check out (and which became my second favorite cartoon of all time) is Infinity Train.

I grew up watching the show Franklin, which is about a turtle who has a childhood, goes to school, and has friends. He is the only character in that show who has a normal name - everyone else is named after the animal that they are (like Bear, who is a bear - Beaver, who is a beaver - Snail, who is a snail - Fox, who is a fox - Rabbit, who is a rabbit). Not only is this very lazy in naming your characters, but it’s very inconsistent with the rest of the show. Even as a kid, I always hated it when shows did this.
Another example is the show Little Bear, which is also a good show and a show I recommend for kids. I just hate the naming of the characters. Little Bear’s friends are named Owl, Cat, Hen, Duck. People who write these shows need to give their characters real names, and those are not real names.

It's not a perfect show. It brought to the network the annoying catch phrase character that isn't even a main character in the show. Cheese, and Fred Fredburger (who were both used in advertising as if they were main characters). Characters who the show would probably be better off without if they remained in their single episodes. Bloo is also a really annoying character most of the time. I can somewhat forgive that and Mac because well, I'd assume Bloo and Mac are both about the same age and kids do act like that, but, honestly, a lot of parts of that show seem like they would have been a lot better without Bloo and Mac.
I enjoy the show but there's a lot of stuff I have problems with, even back when I saw it premier, these issues stuck out to me. I can't say I'm a fan of the trend of "YELL AND MAKE LOUD NOISES AND FUNNY FACES IT'S FUNNY!" that spawned around that era of cartoons. If Fosters was about Wilt, Eduardo, Frankie, Mr. Hareman, Mrs. Foster, and maybe an imaginary friend of the day, I think the show would have been better. You can write children characters who are annoying to everyone else but not annoying to the audience, and that takes skill. But yeah, a good amount of episodes would have been better off without Mac and especially without Bloo. It'd be like if Ed Edd n Eddy only had Eddy as the main character. I don't think that show would have done nearly as well if Eddy was the only main character. I'd probably have to watch it again but I really remember not liking a lot of episodes that I thought had fine concepts, but Bloo and Mac drug it down. There were also other bad episodes like that one where a new Imaginary Friend resident is doing all this stuff and getting the main cast in trouble because Frankie and Mrs. Foster and Hareman turned off their logic centers of their brains. I can't think of a single episode I liked where Cheese was present. I never found him saying I LIKE CHOCOLATE MILK funny. The show has problems, it has a lot of charm, but from what I remember, there were more than a few episodes that made me wish Mac would stop coming back so Bloo could get adopted.
I had similar issues with Billy and Mandy, Billy and some of the other non Mandy/Grim characters ruined a lot of episodes.
Just my two cents, and purely from memory.

There are plenty of these scenes but I can't remember any of them confidently enough besides the worst one imo where Bloo finds a pair of Frankie's bras while rummaging under her bed and makes a sick face.

Well, I really like Lolirock given that it's a magical girl series about a pop star band that are princesses from other planets stopping evil, inspired by stuff like Sailor Moon and the name itself is like the word Lollipop which might inspire the title despite many people being questionable about the name itself though it's a shame it ended with a cliffhanger.
But if it's one thing I can say about titles, it's cartoon titles from franchises when they usually change things up a little to be different. For example, the Transformers series can be a bit too simple on their titles like Transformers Armada, Transformers Cybertron, Transformers Animated, Transformers Prime, two RID series being the 2001 version which is the dubbed version of Car Robots and the 2015 version which is it's own thing but they had to be used on their year number to not be more confusing. Transformers Cyberverse was recent but it was used before as a toyline for smaller TF figures during Prime. I do like Earthspark being the upcoming Transformers series having a different name instead of borrowing it from a line of toys or a simple name used for TF media.

I'm guessing Mr. Enter hasn't seen much of recent anime. The titles alone would be enough to give him an aneurysm. Reincarnated as a Sword, Summoned to Another World for a Second Time, Delicious in Dungeon, Lycoris Recoil, The Vampire Dies in No Time, Goblin Slayer, Mob Psycho 100, One Punch Man, March Comes in Like a Lion, The Devil Is a Part-Timer! Just to name but a few.

i don't see how mob psycho 100 is a bad title. it's catches your eye because of the number and has a surprising amount of meaning. the character is nicknamed mob (which is japanese for background character, because the main character lacks presence i.e. part of a mob), psycho because he has psychic powers, but it's also how you pronouce the japanese word for "the best" (saiko) as he's the strongest psychic in the show and 100 refers to him being the strongest, his emotional bar that goes up to 100 and the manga has 100 chapters.

@@Crabgar I wasn't implying that Mob Psycho 100 was a bad title. The point I was trying to make was that titles for anime and manga are often wild and wacky, sometimes too esoteric to comprehend and other times too on the nose. But in the end, they do catch your eye with how bizarre they can be. Mob Psycho 100 is a great title. If you've never seen the show before, you'd take one look at the cover and begin asking, "Who or what is Mob? Why is he Psycho? And what is the significance of the number 100?" That's the power of a good title.

What about "Randy Cunningham 9th Grade Ninja"? The title may seem too long and a mouthful but the premise delivers what the title promised: it's about a boy named Randy Cunningham, whose in 9th grade and he is a ninja. Although, you could argue that the title gives away the plot of the show, but it doesn't go into too much detail, especially when the plot of the overall series is given to us in the first ten minutes of the first episode.

@@bobi200samatar6 And I just thought of another example: Wordgirl. Yes, that's an educational cartoon but it's still a good show and it's another good example.
It's a really short title, only one word long, but this show also delivers what the title promises: this sounds like a superhero name, the show is about a girl called Wordgirl who is a superhero and one of her super powers is having an extensive encyclopedic knowledge of the definition of words. In every episode, she tells the audience the definition of a new word, two words actually.
Even for an educational cartoon, this is works perfectly. In fact, it can be surprisingly self aware about it's premise and that's what makes it so smartly written

Team Umizoomi, looking back on it, has one of the weirdest titles. Like, it pulls you in to figure out what makes this team of “Umizoomis” But then once you see an episode, they kind of obviously do not explain its meaning. Reply to me if any of you know what an Umizoomi is? It gets weirder when the town is named Umi City. Then I have to ask the question of “What in God’s name is an Umi?” But it sure will lead to some parents accidentally finding Umibouzu.
