    I know a guy who gets $8000ish a year on his tax "return" after paying nothing. He always wants more, including "free" health insurance. I told him to use that return to pay his premiums for the year with that. Instead he spends half on toys for himself and blows the rest on various levels of frivolous spending and nothing on debts. Oh it gets better, he gets $3,400 in stimulus and less than a month later he is stuck at home, calling off sick from work because he doesn't have any money for gas before his next paycheck. Wow!

      After your tax liability is calculated, you can claim credits to lower it. Nonrefundable ones can take your tax liability to $0. Refundable ones can make it negative, which generates a "refund". It is legally possible to get paid more than ever paid in.

Polls usually have a margin of error (which wasn't stated here). If that margin is low enough, what Dave said is rather accurate.

    I like most of what you preach Dave, but I strongly disagree on this one. No one should have to pay the federal Income Tax. Its an immoral tax. It is theft. You can accomplish taxing through other means such as sales tax, gasoline tax, etc. (these are taxes you can opt out of) but taxing one's income is unacceptable in my book. I don't expect this to change, but thats just my personal view on the matter.

      If you live in this country and are using public services then you need to help pay for them. Simple as that

    • @javierdiazjr.9856
      @javierdiazjr.9856 8 років тому +24

      +Megan Kramer So, this is just a personal view of mine, I'm a libertarian in case you want to look it up. To start, public schools are largely funded through property taxes and state sales taxes. Medicare and Medicaid I believe we shouldn't even have. Not a function for the government to serve. You can debate this one but that is where I stand. There are various other agencies of government that I think we should get rid of (dept. of commerce, education, energy, housing, interior to start). This would further reduce the need for funding. But yes, we still need to fund the military, FBI, among other things. Like I said in my previous response, you can accomplish taxing through other means. Sales taxes, gasoline taxes, toll road fees, corporate taxes, etc. These are are all taxes you are not forced to give into. You don't need to buy gas, or buy in general. It is an option for the most part. Income tax is forced on you. No way out, unless you renounce your citizenship (which costs money to do so). I'm not opposed to taxes, just opposed to the idea that I HAVE to give in. Feel free to disagree, but idk.. this is just my personal view on the matter. :)

    • @javierdiazjr.9856
      @javierdiazjr.9856 8 років тому +8

      +Michael Seckman My problem with Medicaid and Medicare is not so much the programs themselves nor the services they provide, its that its run by the federal government. I simply ascribe to the idea that the government shouldn't be involved in healthcare whatsoever (many other things too, but thats another discussion). As per education, I did not say I didn't support education. I simply said we should get rid of the U.S. Dept. of Education. Its not a role for the federal government to serve is the way I see it. I suspect you'll disagree with me and feel free to do so. I just simply prefer a smaller federal government with as little intervention in our everyday lives. :) #libertarian #freemarketcapitalism #laissezfaire

      +Javier Diaz Jr.
      I agree with you. Nowhere in the Constitution does it grant the federal government to do about 90% of what they do. That is why our nation is in the mess that it is in. If the federal government was kept in the box that the Constitution says it should be in, then the states and the local government should be able to take care of everything else. I have many Libertarian leanings and agree with much of what the party stands for. All of this discussion is good and is a perfect example of why Constitutional limits on government are a good thing. When the federal government dabbles in things that it is forbidden to dabble in, things go south in a hurry. We could sit here and start listing things and the list would grow very quickly. When the federal government does things that it isn't allowed to do legally, and they can borrow all of the money that it wants from the FED, then we will have $19 trillion in debt, $200 trillion in unfunded liabilities, 700 military bases all over the world, states and people forced to do things against their will because someone in Washington DC says that we have to, etc etc. Our founding fathers revolted against England for much less than what we are faced with today. It isn't just income taxes. Isn't it ironic that America went from nothing in 1776 to a world super power and we didn't even have an income tax until 1913. The income tax is only to keep the citizens broke and to allow the Congress to spend money on things that they are not allowed to spend money on. The federal gov't would function just fine with no income tax. If one would just read the books, "The Law that Never Was", it is proven that the 16th amendment was never properly ratified anyway. There are so many things in this nation that are broken and it all starts with the federal government.

    While we pay very little in federal tax, we pay a lot of other tax. Social security, Medicare tax, sdi, property tax, sales tax, all the taxes that added onto utilities like phone bill and stuff, car registration tax. These are the taxes all people pay regardless of the income. These taxes alone will add up to at least 18%. Just the taxes of my paycheck are like 10%, and it doesn't include federal tax, then, the 8% sales tax on everything I buy, plus all the hidden taxes we don't even see. For a family with an income that is less than 25K, paying 4k in just these taxes, plus another 2k property tax every year, is a lot bigger chank than for someone making over 100k a year. It takes at least 30k a year just to meet basic human needs for a family. If we make less than that, plus pay a huge chank of it in taxes, we end up going without a lot of basic needs. So every extra dollar that goes to taxes on top of that, makes us go without even more things

    You can make the same argument against the Child Tax Credit. Why do I, as a single, childless person, have to pay more than a person earning the same amount that has a child? That child demands so much more from the system than I do (schools, Medicaid, police, etc.). We are no longer a nation in need of more people like we were in the 19th century. There should be a child tax PENALTY, not a credit.

      A child tax penalty would not stop everyone from having children, but it may stop low income people from having children, which would be a good thing as there will be less demand for entitlements. The fewer people we have here in the US, the more resources will be available for those of us that are here.

    • @deteriaF82

      There shouldn't be any deductions for having children. People need to learn how to adult and quit having children if you know you can't afford to raise them. Everything in life has a cost and most of America is too stupid to account for consequences of raising a child.
      Step 1, make enough money and have career on track. Step 2, have kid(s) because financially ready to. Step 3, raise them appropriately and give them good childhood growing up because you aren't broke and missed out on Step 1.

    Easy to say everyone should pay income taxes when you are worth 55 million dollars. Why should Americans pay more taxes when the money goes to a bunch of politicians that haven't been able to balance a budget in years. Americans have skin in the game, they've been showing up to work forever. The issue is, Americans don't get to vote on real issues. They get to vote on a bunch of politicians that don't really represent peoples interest. Dave, for a guy worth 55 million dollars you sure aren't looking out for the people that made you rich. Why should everyone join the military? Let's be honest, we haven't been attacked in over 70 years. Everything else from that point on has been government agenda. • @knpstrr
      @knpstrr 8 років тому

      goldfische The thinking is that if the government subsidizes them, the corporations won't move over seas and so it gives people jobs. This isn't a new phenomena at all. These type of tax incentives have been used for a long long time. More so on the state level to attract businesses, but with globalization it is occurring more on the federal level.
      You are definitely allowed to disagree with this, but that is the rationale.
      Also for information's sake, in 2015 GE had an income tax expense of $6.4 billion according to yahoo finance and that left it with a $1.7 billion profit after tax.

    • @goldfische
      @goldfische 8 років тому

      +knpstrr Thanks for the correction. Obviously I've got GE mixed up with another corporation. That said, I can't help but feel that paying subsidies to profitable companies just for a few jobs (remember that many of the worst offenders still hire foreign workers and buy foreign parts, etc.) is essentially blackmail. I know that's working out better for companies like GE than it does for us. Just saying.

    Income tax shouldn't exist at all.
    But on a side note(without seeing the study)---I don't think your rant is contextually right. Even if your stats are right that only 55% of the total millions of Americans pay income tax, the study was not based on total amount of Americans. I didn't answer that question "Do we pay too much in income tax?" just to prove it, neither did my wife.
    It's possible the sample included more people who do pay than those who don't pay income taxes--or due to an odd fluke they only questioned people who actually DO pay taxes.
    Again I haven't seen the study--but this rant seems like it's based on a false foundation.

      +droptozro The study is based on IRS statistics. I am a tax accountant, and from experience I can tell you that this number is entirely accurate. Many Americans who make less than 40k and have children pay nothing in income taxes, but get money back due to the earned income credit. I've had many low-income clients with children get back anywhere from $4-10k without any tax liability due to EIC and ACTC. Also, many farmers and business owners I've worked with pay nothing in income taxes due large write-offs with depreciation. You also need to consider senior citizens. If their only income is social security, they pay nothing in taxes. In fact, if they structure their income accordingly, they can have around 40k in combined social security, IRA/Pension/Investment income due to the taxability rules for social security. Of all the tax returns I completed, 45% not paying taxes actually seems accurate, and what they're doing is perfectly legal.

    Nobody who earns a wage, salary, commission, etc. is required to pay federal income tax under the 16th amendment. "Income" is a gain from business or investment activity. The wage, salary, or commission you earn at your job is not "income" because it is not a gain. It is an equal exchange of value - - you exchange your time & labor for an amount of money that you and your employer agree is what your time and labor is worth - - therefore no gain. There is NO LAW that requires most of us to pay federal income tax, but we do anyway because the IRS will have us locked in a cage if we don't. As for "paying our fair share", everyone should know that NOT ONE CENT of the federal income tax goes to pay for ANY government service or program. 100% goes to the federal reserve as interest on the 'money' they create from thin air and the loan to us WITH INTEREST! END THE FED and END THE IRS.

The wage, salary , or commission you are paid at your job is not income; it is an equal exchange of value and thus not subject to income tax. But, as you pointed out they have the guns and the courts and the jails, so we pay it.

    What do you think about the large corporations such as GM and United and American Airlines not paying any tax this year? Or the the 300,000 religious congratulations that absolutely 0 tax as well? By the way, they 600 Billion dollars of property. Is it ok for them not to have skin in the game?

      +ReyReyloads There are a number of reasons why a profitable company may not pay taxes. In this case they wrote off loses from earlier years . That's the law under the tax code and it's legal. In fact any business can do it. Big or small. And the fact is In 2015, General Motors saw a tax credit of of $1.9 billion, even though its earnings before taxes hit $7.7 billion but they did indeed pay a big tax bill.

      +TELEVISIONARCHIVES And the half-ish not paying any income tax is supported by law, as well. I'm not saying I agree with that or not, but I don't think that the legality of things was really his point. There is a principle at work here, and this country desperately needs tax reform (in my humble opinion).

    If 57% of people on a survey say they pay too much in income tax, that doesn't mean 57% of America thinks that. The survey is not representative of Americans, clearly. In fact, where ever they source the respondents, might be overrepresented by upper middle class people who do pay too much tax

    Only corporations should pay taxes!!! No individual people should pay taxes just like it used to be before the Federal reserve!!!! Now NO one should be getting any free money either!!!

    I only pay property and sales tax. The government then proceeds to work with my employer to steal about twenty five percent of my income.

    I think a straight flat tax would be the most fair. People on the lower side of the income would pay something and people on the high end of the income spectrum would not be allowed to use loopholes like depreciation to get out of paying taxes. In a real flat taxes system there would be ALMOST NO DEDUCTIONS, which is how the wealthy avoid taxes. Some deductions like a education deduction and a foreign income tax credit could still exist since education is good and double taxation is bad.

    57% of people that took the quiz/poll might not represent individuals who don’t pay taxes. If you survey 100 people and 80% pay taxes then that 57% that have an issue actually might pay taxes.

    I'm poor enough that I receive a Pell and other government grants. I also worked hard enough to earn private scholarships that I actually have to pay tax on those grants and get paid by the government to go to college outside of room and board. Gotta love a government that just takes other people's money, gives 1-2k to someone who paid nothing in and gets to go to school for free, while inflating the price for the people who paid in.

    Dave I believe your statement is off.
    1. The rich are not the only ones paying taxes. In fact there are enough tax loop holes where they pay much less than middle class by far.
    2. If you work for any kind of company usually your Federal and state income tax is taken out of your pay before you even get paid.
    I would really like to examine the data of the statistical analysis of the statement that only 50% pay taxes. It just doesn't add up.

    For those that currently so broke and pay no taxes, the behavior needs to change. We live in a capitalistic society, where you could have limitless potential (IF YOU WORK FOR IT) and don't make poor life choices. Too many people don't think of consequences of their actions and just complain for free handouts. Take a look at someone richer than you, and use that to motivate and drive you to succeed further in life so you can obtain similar success.

    It amazes me how deceived 90% of the people on this thread are totally ignorant that they believe they are liable to pay a federal income tax to corrupt wasteful system. The 23 trillion in debt is the only thing you are paying into, because the gov’t keeps writing checks from the treasury to operate, not to mention student loans, and welfare.

    I make 7.75 per hour... actually scratch that, since like 15 percent of what I make gets stolen by the government anyways, so I’m actually only making about 6.50 an hour.
    And don’t even get me started on the taxes of products...
    Since they can’t raise taxes THAT much on products, they raise the price itself, even more than how much the tax percentage is, but you still gotta spend more tax money on a price raised product anyways because it’s already based on a certain percentage of how much you are spending in the first place!
    Also, what’s the point of taxes in the first place? They are going to do tax returns in February anyways, so the government really isn’t gaining any money, if they are spending the tax money, how are we even getting that money back from tax returns?
    What, is my money just fraud counterfeit?
    My conclusion:
    It’s just one big scam!

    The federal income tax is an ILLEGAL tax. Just being subjective here because I’ve made 10,000 a year when I was 14 and have increased my income every single year to what I make now. It NEVER PASSED AS A LAW PASSES IN OUR GOVERNMENT, yet it was pushed through anyways.
