Yeah, even a week or two can sometimes make you lose your "mojo". I have been working on a no coding freelance course and I am finding hard to get back into serious projects. That is what prompted me to make this video

Great advice Brad! As a software engineer and a small youtuber I agree 100% with Brad that while coming back to programming after a hiatus, we should take our time and get back slowly and not put extra pressure on ourselves so that we don't get burned out right away. Always remember to not let the pressure of your expectations take your joy away from programming :) Brad's advice always helped me in my own programming journey. So thanks a lot Brad :)
I'm happy to hear that I'm not the only one facing issues when getting back to code after a break. it always takes me a few days before realizing that YES, that code was written by me and I can improve it. Just have to get the brain in this coding mode again.
Thanks for this video, Brad! I was actively into coding for a good 1.5 years and when it was about time to get on the job hunt, real life happened, was unemployed for too long and couldnt continue being that way so managed to find a non tech job and it's been 7 months that I haven't done any coding, been going through some videos as a refresher, it really sucks to start all over again but yeah I'm doing my best to stay consistent.
I've had a similar experience. I graduated as a software engineer but couldn't land a programming job so I wasted a few months doing something else. Now I'm trying to get back to coding but it's awfully overwhelming. I hope you're still consistent and it worked out.
Thanks, Brad for the tips. have been off track for more than a year and trying my best to get back on the track and wasn't really getting there and feeling totally blank. Watching this really motivated me a lot.
Thank you very much for this video all the other one by the way. I can relate to what you’re saying. I’m 55, I started to code in 1983 and stopped in 2006. Life is what it is, I decided to come back to programming in 2018, working part time as a freelancer and then full time. But even if the logic of programming was still in my mind, technology had dramatically changed. I needed to learn a lot and you need to know that YOU have been part of my comeback… I followed many of your classes that helped me being back on track. I finally decided to go back to a full time job on a web development agency and although I had to work hard to earn my spot amongst the young and talented developers around me, it was a fulfilling challenge and I’m glad I did. If it can motivate you and give you a purpose, your classes has helped me A LOT. Thanks again !
It is really tough for us "older" developers and in so many different ways. Keeping up with the sharp minds and high motivation of young developers is no easy task. Congrats on pushing though.
I am coming back after 4 kids and 15 years... i am so lost dont know where to begin.. dont think anyone here has taken a break this long. Lol The video is very motivating. Thanks brad
Perfect Advice brother. Your udemy 20 JavaScript HTML CSS got my career started a few months ago. You changed my future, and my sons. I got a job at a biopharmaceutical conpany because your course opened up my eyes about modern technologies and helped shape my career, my future, and most importantly my sons. Thank you brother.
I just resigned two weeks ago from my old job as angular developer because of burnout, and I intend to take 1-2 months of rest. This video feels like it was made for me lol. Thanks for the tips Brad!
This is very true Brad. 3 years ago I was very passionate about learning and using After effects to create motion graphics , and after a long break during the pandemic, I found myself less excited and motivated to use the software again. There is a hope to come back :) , Thank you so much man for sharing this great video ,
Took a break for almost a year because I got burnt out by my first "job" I got after 4 years of just learning. I went and improve on my speaking, writing, and even reading skills. And I gotta say, now that I'm getting back into this that I'm better than I have ever been.
Reading the comments and surprised to see how many people this timed perfectly with, including myself, just took a hiatus and now getting back into things, good tips. I would recommend develop a side hobby that can be completed in a weekend, maybe not a full week off, where you can disconnect, for me hiking/camping. Just something to look forward to outside of work that isn't work.
As someone who burned out after a bootcamp and struggled with the shame of loosing motivation this is really helpful. Especially the first step, "focus on a specific area". I was struggling with what to start first since I was rusty across the board and I just wanted to work on everything but this gave me clarity. Thanks for the tips!
I don't know if you knew, but you're a great motivator! Your sincerity and modesty, each time they remind me over and over that, I am just a human being like you, then something move in my head, and everything seems possible to me again. Thank you, man.
I have taken a break for about 2-3 months now and I have been sstruggling to get back in. This video was just what I needed to see. Thanks a lot for this Brad. It's good to know I am not alone.
I think you heard my mind. Thank you so much. This is exactly what I really needed. I was talking and asking God to give me something. And you gave me this video. Thank you so much. Means the world to me.
Thank you. This alone cannot bring me back to where I left my job almost a year ago, but I'm sure if I decided to start again, I would come back here to check out your tips many times.
Been programming for over 20 years with much frustration and I always found fault with my client/company...and then quit and found another place to work. But I noticed it was a cycle of me working too much and hating the company for it. Now, I realize I should take responsibility for my own burn-out. I was working too many hours (imposter syndrome gets me EVERY the time) to make up for my perceived inadequacies. Yet I was seen as a very competent developer. So, please take your breaks, like Brad says, or it will sneak up on you!
Thanks Brad, this helped. I'm coming back to coding after burning out hard a few years back, and I've been facing a lot of negative thoughts and feelings about how I 'failed' by burning out before. Hearing you talk about how it's normal to go through burnout helped me to realize I'm not the only one dealing with this, and that it doesn't make me a failure. To everyone else coming back from burnout: it's okay! You can do this, and you can make it work better this time!
Thanks Brad for the advice. I've been out 15 years now and worked in VB6, SQL, HTML, JavaScript and ASP back then. I would like to get back in the game but there seems to be a lot of changes since then. But it does seem to have a lot of resources are out there and available too. I like your attitude about working it 2 hours at a time and get on a schedule. That makes a lot of sense.
You seriously dropped this video at such a perfect time for me. First thing I did once I started coding again this week after a 6 month break is start brushing up on React with your 2021 crash course.
I'm also making a comeback after almost a year of break. Not because I was burnt out or something, but after a while, I lost the passion and the drive for working on the computer over and over again, But now I feel my passion is getting back. And right now I started a simple test project. Responsive landing page with HTML/CSS/Sass/js, just to sharp up my mind again.
learning never stops.. i'm also getting back to development after 3 long years of hiatus. Started again from basic html, css to javascript and now im into react, next.js, vue , laravel.and devops
It's been over a month now since I've stopped working on this project in which am working on an idea while leaning both nest and react from scratch. Honestly I lost motivation and stopped... Thanks so much for this video! I got my first programming job a couple months back and it was a nightmare. I was a junior and the only developer there. I ended up quitting in two weeks and since then I haven't written a single line of code. I'm starting to get back to it and this video really gave some great tops to get into the swing of things.
I am Glad that you made this video, because I stopped for a year and two months and now I feel like my mind is blank, or that I have to start all over again!!! Maybe I will get the pace after I start doing it on a regular basis.
Thank you Brad, I just went through a _blank period, like one day I just woke up and motivation was gone. I did too many fields, like front and back development, plus cyber security and blogging (and vblogging) and it felt like jumping in the rabbit hole. I think for me the biggest problem was doing it alone, I needed some kind of validation (did pass exams so not that kind of validation), feedback from another human. It is sort of playing a Chess game with AI which completely damaged my perspective on how to play a game with a human. Took a break this summer, and taking it slow but surely at this point. Great points about financial, family our own fitness and healht! Thank you again!
Thank you for this video there wasn't a lot when I googled this I took about a year break I was in a really bad place mentally and physically I've been trying to start getting back to it and have found myself not feeling confident at all I'm refreshing my knowledge in everything I know and this was a good sign that im going in the right direction
I often forget things that i have learnt and feel that I don´t measure up to people like you who i learn from because of it. Much more so because you all make it seem to seamless and easy. So, thank you for this video. It makes me feel a bit more normal.
I took 15 years off. I agree with everything you said. The only thing I would emphasize is when you start, focus on the core. If you are a web developer that means HTML, CSS, JavaScript. If you are a Microsoft developer focusing on C#. Once you get your core reestablish then start reaching further and further out in the different technologies. Having just done this with in the last two years, it’s very easy to overwhelm yourself trying to learn everything all at once. Fortunately I recognized that and followed my own advice. It was a much better path.
Hey Brad, haven't visited your site since you took your break. Wound up doing more app support than development. Glad to see you're OK and back in the saddle!
I really liked your course about 50 days of css and js. I enjoy watching your channel and at the same time learning English, it's a combo! Thank you Brad!
This is exactly what I needed. Thank you for this! While I haven't taken a break, my coding skills have been spread out across multiple platforms/libraries, and I feel like I've completely forgot how to code in the area I love the most.
Thanks for these kinda vids Brad. I think you should do these kinda vids every now and then in between your programming tutorials. Whenever I listen to you I always feel motivated and inspired. I feels so good to meet someone on the internet and completely relate to them. I always thought I was the only one who had impostor syndrom. I can relate to you and your stories in many ways man. I even prefer to be self-employed than working for companies. Thanks once again
Hey Brad, I remember taking web design course back in like 2000 at UML. This is purely an interest in me but I sometimes think I should have kept doing the web dev and programming stuff. I do this partially for my work but we also use Confluence ( which I actually really dislike) anyway I really appreciate the volume of quality content you produce. It has really sparked my interest in this stuff again!
I love this topic! I've been programming for 2 years and start feeling burnout because of the amount of projects and stress that comes from supporting them. The automation industry is crazy in my country. Even though there are managers, at some point you have to do planning, coding, management and communication all by yourself.
I was learning web development for about a year; however, I had to stop in April due to personal issues. I have a basic understanding of Html, Css, JavaScript and was beginning to learn fletch API. I just want to say, thank you for your motivation and I am going to continue my programming journey; I've invested too much to have it all go down the drain.
Three years ago I started a self (UA-cam/free courses) taught developer journey. After many courses and a 6 month free bootcamp, I felt like having enough knowledge to start job search. Had a nice internship, but then got hired as a WordPress dev. Now, after two years of doing that I want to go back to JS - React - Node...It feels like coming back after a break. Thank you for the courses and the advice. Hope you and your family are doing well.
I think these kinds of videos are as important as the coding ones because they help a lot in the coding journey. I enjoy them, since they keep me going . Thanks and do these kinds often
Solid advice. Having your own project is especially important to help with encouragement. You didn't mention watching videos like those on Traversy. I've made the plunge into tkinter through one of them. Good clear code-along!
Thank you so much for all those tips. They are very helpful. I am coming back after 2-years break due to massive burnout. I feel ready but I didn't know where to start. Thanks to you, now I know!
I took a break for about 4 months and can't seem to motivate myself to start again.. so I decided to check my favorite coding teachers channel and what a coincidence this video is haha
Brad, I really must say, your courses are the best I have seen. They are all very easy to follow, explained very well and concise. Thank you so much for creating so much content. Especially the free content! Thankyou thankyou thankyou thankyou.
Thanks for this!! I took a 4 month break due to a personal problem and i just turned 19 last week and i think i should learn again, i know it's hard to start and continue but i can do it!!
Thank you so much brad. I needed this. I have spent the last year learning a whole new skill in a different industry and whenever I wanted to learn code again, I just could not bring myself to write the code again. It's as if the love is gone. This is valuable advice. This should help me ease my way into it again and kick on.
I just took a week brake today because of psychical health 😔 Today I'm still sick but better and I'm back to it with one of your videos to start things off. It's third time in past 4 months I'm getting sick, different this time I decided to take a brake instead of pushing through as a normally would. I wish I wouldn't had gotten sick because it gets in a way of programming, but I suppose I've been getting sick due to enormous hours I put in into it due to my love and passion for it. I'm learning to find a way to balance it out and I think I'll have to almost make myself not to program and rest more, it's hard tho
This needful but beginners shouldn't settle for videos alone, deep thoughts of life is not shared or made available to everyone. I am so happy for taking the bold step in working and investing $2000 with him after a week I received $9,300 to my bank.
I have been researching all this while for a digital assets investment and I found Bitcoin to be the most profiting of them all, I'm definitely bouncing on this opportunity, thank you so much.
. 4 years , i got a complete understanding of html, css, sass, js, jquery, xml and ajax including php. complete undestanding of mern stack, doing ssr's sending data properly andd neatly vice versa server to client. using git, githubs then webpack, compiling and transpiling your assets . using librarys such as bootstap . complete understanding and layouting your website from design and images specially layout to make it easy and fast . mobile app development then networking . came back after a break realizing i can already continue with ease ^^_
I've had a three year break and getting back into the swing of things. It feels good to know that I'm not alone.
How is it going now? How difficult was it for you to get back on track?

I feels so good to meet someone on the internet and completely relate to them. I always thought I was the only one who had impostor syndrom. I can relate to you and your stories in many ways man. I even prefer to be self-employed than working for companies.
Thanks once again
Good to see you are back Brad. You always seem to come out with these types of videos when I need it most. Thanks Man!
Im glad your back brother we all missed you
Hey Brad, I remember taking web design course back in like 2000 at UML. This is purely an interest in me but I sometimes think I should have kept doing the web dev and programming stuff. I do this partially for my work but we also use Confluence ( which I actually really dislike) anyway I really appreciate the volume of quality content you produce. It has really sparked my interest in this stuff again!
You're an incredible speaker ! I'm going to come back soon to coding after a depression and this is has been really helpful.
I feel like this video was made for me, had to take a 4 month break due to chemo. Also purchased your react course on Udemy. Thank you.
Brad always hits the correct spot! My opinion is to move forward, not to try to mix old and new
Thank you for always being a great mentor, Brad
Brand you are a legend. It is never to late to come back and try it again.. Thanks for your tipps. All the best and stay safe !!
Cheers Ch
Welcome back, I hope your health now good right now 😊
Thank you so much for all those tips. They are very helpful. I am coming back after 2-years break due to massive burnout. I feel ready but I didn't know where to start. Thanks to you, now I know!
This was exactly what I was looking for a couple of days back.
Brad can read minds
happy to see you again, welcome back sir
I took a break for about 4 months and can't seem to motivate myself to start again.. so I decided to check my favorite coding teachers channel and what a coincidence this video is haha
Great tips, thank you for sharing. I took a couple of weeks break to avoid burning out. Taking breaks is super important
Brad you always posting content that i need when i need it the most
Brad i learn lot from you, we all love you
Brad, I really must say, your courses are the best I have seen.
How timely and important for me personally, I can't even begin to explain. Thanks Brad!
I am very glad that you come back!
Thanks Brad, you said you are not motivated like before, but you encouraged me to start again. Thank YOU, again!
You are amazing Brad, thanks for the motivation... I really needed it and genuinely feel better right now! All the best to you and your family!
I just took a week brake today because of psychical health 😔
Today I'm still sick but better and I'm back to it with one of your videos to start things off.
Thanks Brad. I needed to hear this as I'm starting my job for a company as an IT Manager and enhancing their website is one of my main priorities.
Happy to find this, thanks! Crawling my way back to the programming industry. Wish me luck!! :)
My man! Glad to see you looking good and healthy!
The economic hardship , recession , unemployment and the loss of job caused by covid pandemic is enough to push people into financial ventures .
I wanted to invest more in crypto, but the fluctuations in crypto value discouraged me into dumping.
@@annabellemichelle2376 That won't bother you if you trade with a professional like Mr Richard Emerson
Yeah I know him, who doesn't know Mr Richard Emerson of (HSBC SECURITY (USA) INC).
Thank you for posting this great video on International Programmers Day (Sept.13). Perfect timing Brad.
. 4 years , i got a complete understanding of html, css, sass, js, jquery, xml and ajax including php. complete undestanding of mern stack, doing ssr's sending data properly andd neatly vice versa server to client. using git, githubs then webpack, compiling and transpiling your assets . using librarys such as bootstap . complete understanding and layouting your website from design and images specially layout to make it easy and fast . mobile app development then networking . came back after a break realizing i can already continue with ease ^^_
this is such a big help for someone like me who's a self-taught dev. thank you so much ❤💯
Great that you decided to get back on, I owe my career to you!
