Having studied plant breeding and biotechnology I too wonder who is gate keeping the off target effects of this gene editing. Apparently nobody because the micronutrient profile of today's tomatoes have undergone a significant decline in comparison to heirloom varieties from about a 100 years ago. Not to say that all this decline comes from breeding but it's definitely a big part of the reason... I too am of the opinion, that genetic engineering is a great exploratory tool but it's use should be much more sparing..
Nowdays you should eat organic produce (no GMO and no pesticides), and to get the nutrient level required do some juicing as well. Even the soil gets depleted from overfarming and not rotating crops.
