ASME certified air receiver tanks have expiration dates. it will be stamped in metal and usually says discard after XX/XXXX month and year. Air receiver tanks can be re-certified via visual and ultrasonic metal thickness inspection. The cost for inspection usually exceeds the replacement cost for small tanks, and is why there is not much discussion on the topic.
If the air receiver tank is used in commercial facility with OSHA covered employees, then tank expiration date and/or re-certification testing should be part of your site inspection. Expired tanks will result in a negative finding that needs correction.
In many localities, air receiver tank inspection is conducted by local fire marshal or fire prevention authority having jurisdiction in your local. The capability exists in support of hazardous materials tank inspections for commercial business. Any business with large quantities of hazardous materials on site are typically site inspected once every 1-2 years depending on local zoning codification.
For homeowner owning a compressor with an expired air receiver tank you only have a couple choices:
    - If friends with local fire authority, invite them to a BBQ and ask them to bring the ultrasonic inspection tool to check your tank. :)
    - Transport tank to a certified inspection station. Most compressed gas wholesalers (propane, welding, etc) offer tank re-certification services. Call before you visit as many have minimum tank sizes for testing, and require removal of any tank mounted compressor.
    - Buy a new tank.
This little known information is one reason that it is easy to find old air compressors listed on used sites.
And you should always: Caveat emptor
Note: not all localities treat non-commercial air receiver tanks the same way and the above may only partially apply to you.
    Cheers!
PS - Compressed gas tank regulations are PIA. Propane and welding gas tanks have expiration dates also, and supposed to be checked every time they are refilled by certified hazardous material distributor.

Air compressors put me on edge a little, which at least makes me respect their danger and makes me a little safer. I've had my air compressor from new for two years now; I frequently drain the air with the effort made to tip it for maximum water removal. Never had any water come out, but I still want to check for rust with a boroscope next year.

Hello CarsSimplified! Welcome to the channel! And I agree the first few years I had mine I was always hesitant but I trust me and I trust mine now. I drain them frequently and out of my little one never get anything out of my 26 gallon every once in awhile I get the tiniest bit of water. But I’d say definitely stick a borescope in because it eases the mind. I appreciate you watching!

I keep my 20 gallon empty it only takes 2 or 3 minutes to fill when i need it. I don't know if thats the right thing to do its just what i do. Thank you Sir

I do the same with mine as well. Fill it when in use and drain it when not. That is the proper way in my opinion. Especially for at home. Thanks for watching George! Hope your doing well buddy!

I've been around air compressors and tanks for decades and I've never heard, or seen one catastrophically fail from anyone i know...
I seen some videos of people that have trash, that they refer to as an air compressor. They've never purged the water from, or cleaned, or maintained the tank. Apparently the rusty container that they call a tank catastrophically failed.
The small rust pin prick in most tanks is not going to cause a catastrophic failure. I'll just cause air to leak.
Spray some rust inhibitor and oil inside the tank and drain any water... That compressor probably has a ton of life in it

Nah. I believe you but I ain’t running it or trusting it. Who knows how long my brother neglected it. So off it goes but my buddy did salvage the motor for himself. Thanks for the info buddy! And thanks for watching!

@@themaintenanceman1 If you have a rifle; you could bring a fully pressurized tank to a range and shoot it. I doubt you would get a catastrophic failure from poking holes in it. But it would discharge the air quickly.
You mentioned that you like to fully discharge a tank when it's not in use... I don't like to do this as the process of filling and draining a tank creates condensation. It's better to leave the tank charged and purge the water as it collects in my opinion. Then, every once in a while, fully drain and inspect the tank and spray some corrosion inhibitor inside of it.
Leaving the tank fully charged will also help you determine if any leaks are occurring (which could be caused by rust)

@@xephael3485 I’ve heard it both ways. I mean my air tanks haven’t been used in a long time. Maybe 8 months. Sorry dude. I’ve seen some air compressors on UA-cam blow up and they looked fine from the outside. I know they have a lot of built in safety features but mine sit in the garage specifically my 26 gallon is right next to the man door going into the house and I just don’t feel comfortable with it filled being that my kids constantly go in and out of that door. Again that’s just my paranoia and I believe you. Im just a very cautious guy. Lol

7:52 I take it that's from your brother's air compressor and it was all the water that he never drained out of it?

@@themaintenanceman1 Here is a page of the sorts of tanks that have been documented to fail... you can tell from the images that they're complete pieces of junk compared to that heavy gauge tank you had: sites.google.com/site/metropolitanforensics/cause-of-explosion-of-air-compressor-tanks
Some pin holes are nothing to worry about. If you read about the failures, you can see a pattern of stupidity generally.
