Creating a Dramatic Burlesque Style Image with 5 Lights

  • In this Photo Deconstruction I’m going to show you how I create a dramatic burlesque style image using 5 strobes.
This image was taken during my in person Boudoir/Burlesque workshop that I host multiple times per year (lindsayadler.p....
    💡Lighting
To start, my main light is an Optical Spot -- which as the name suggests, lets me create a spotlight on the subject that mimics stage lighting.
I’m also using another Optical Spot with gobo in the far back left to cast a search light style pattern on the backdrop. The reason I opted to do this was simply because I wanted something dramatic in the background rather than just the plain backdrop.
Next, lights 3 and 4 are 1x4’ strip softboxes with grids to help accentuate the model and her gorgeous figure.
My 5th and final light is a large umbrella with diffusion and blue gel to lift up the shadows and provide a kiss of color.
It’s really the multi light setup that gives this image that “Old Hollywood” look - of course in addition to the timeless look of the model and amazing wardrobe. 😆
This is what I ended up with: 4:25
    Straight out of camera: 5:30
    🖌️ Post Processing
Straight out of camera the photo looked great. It didn’t really require that much post processing, but I wasn’t satisfied with the lack of blue in the shadows from the main light, so I decided to do some color grading in Capture One to create a uniform look. I also dramatically popped the highlights, increased the contrast, added clarity and desaturated the colors a bit.
In terms of retouching, there were just some tiny areas that I cleaned up.
    💭 Final Thoughts
A 5 light setup is always going to be intimidating. To be fair, many images can be accomplished with less lighting, but for this photo, every single light had its purpose.
I approach lighting by figuring out what each light will add to the scene. I don’t always dive head first in with the most amount of lights possible. So take this into consideration building your own lighting setups.

I’m always impressed by your artistic vision. I’ve often thought an optical spot would be useful, never considered two of them! Alas, I’ve yet to get even one. But, I’m tempted…

Definitely something better than what I've gotten from the stage. Excellent tutorial Lindsay, but if I were to do 3 lights, would you choose to go with 1 optical spot, 1 large umbrella, and a box opposite the main or something else?

    • @lindsayadlerphoto
      @lindsayadlerphoto  2 роки тому +1

Really depends. The light from the sides really helps pop the model out so maybe those would be used as rim lights and you could introducing some white v-flats to bounce some light back into the model.

The SOOC shot (5:30) is a technically perfect image, but what you ended up with (4:25) is a lot better. The gel and the post processing add the cinematic feel and make the image much more attractive. Very good.
As to the D2 (1,000Ws) what kind of level did you have them at? All at level 6 (*) or below? Or (all) above 6?
(*) The 6 is relevant to Nikon or Canon speedlight shooters as this is about the maximum power of their top models. For Holy Cow (God Ox) we need to draw the line at the D2's 5.5.
That is, at full power and with ~long recycle times.

Lindsay you are very good bike, but it is difficult for me to follow you well because of the English: even reducing the speed it is not always easy to be able to translate everything. The only alternative is to follow the subtitles. Would it be possible to implement Italian subtitles?
