  • RVV-AE Air-to-air medium-range missile is designed to engage aerial targets (fighters, strikers, bombers, helicopters, military transport aircraft, and cruise missiles) day and night, at all aspect angles, in ECM environment, against earth or water surfaces, including multi-channel firing according to fire-and-forget principle. The missile is intended to arm MiG and Su type aircraft.
    The missile has the inertial targeting system with radio correction and active radar homing on the final stage of the trajectory.

      Exactly and that is the reason why newer R-77-1 has dual-band radar seeker. Type 9B1103M-200PА has ARH and SARH , where ARH mode works in Ku-band and SARH mode works in X-band. When they work simultaneously in terminal phase of guidance , it is almost imposible to jamm it. DRFM technology is good for jamming ARH but not SARH .There is also multi-band radar seeker 9B1103M-PS with ARH mode ( Ku-band) and passive radar homing mode that works in 7 differ bands for use in radio-silence combat mode. This subversion can be used against fighters with radars and jammers turned on.

    Hi everyone !
    May I write some I hope interesting details and info's .This is promotive video-material about A2A missile R-77E or Product 190 ( manufacturer's GosMKB 'Vympel' designation) as export version of old R-77 (Product 170 ). On sequence 0:32 we can clearly see Russian cyrilic letter designation 'PBB-AE' or translated in english, it will be RVV-AYe because that letter E is not E but Ye in Russian .So it does not mean E for Export as many sources wrote about. In fact RVV-AYe was designation for project of new A2A missile from 1982.Product 170 was Vympel's designation and it was later known as K-77 ( test version ) and R-77 ( serial/operational version ) /military designations. From 1995 Moscow's company GosMKB 'Vympel' is producing export version R-77E or Product 190 .
    RVV-AYe was a project of first in the world highly agile and maneuverable AAM for BVR combat especially for combat against fighters.R-77/E has very inovative movable Steel-made lattice stabilizers and thanks to them has phenomenal agility and maneuverability ( laterall movements). The required torque of them doesn't exceed 1.5 kGm, which allowed the use of small and lightweight electric steering gears. R-77/E can pull 50G lateral load in active or passive phase of flight so with 175 kgs of launch weight it is easy to calculate its weight in any given phase of flight. With that 50G load target must pull 12G load in evasive maneuver which is impossible for any fighter or fighter-pilot. It has 40°-50° AoA limit and 150°/sec turn rate ( angular speed) .Same flight-maneuvering abilities has new A2A missile R-77-1 ( Product 170-1).R-77/E can also turn and maneuver even in subsonic speed ( 0.5 Mach and more) and that is something imposible for western missiles.
    If we compare these parameters with parameters of western A2A missiles like Raytheon AMRAAM and MBDA Meteor ,R-77E is much better because they have next limitations: 30-35G lateral load,no more then 35° AoA and about 100°/sec turn rate and can not turn and maneuver in subsonic speed mode as mentioned . Fly path can be straight one or with 'loft' scenario .
    R-77 was developed to achieve result of Ph ( probability of hit ) 0.8 or 80% with one missile and use of radio-corection channel and with launch distance of max 50kms in BVR combat against incoming 9G capable fighter. Max authorised launch distance against big incoming target is 80 kms ( launch in stratosphere with supersonic speed). Vmax ( true air speed) of R-77/E is 4.5 Mach after active phase of flight ends ( solid rocket fuel burn/acceleration phase).Time of aerodynamic stability and controlability is 60 sec.
    R-77E has guidance in two phase : first inertial guidance with modified proportional closing method (mathematically modeled flypath ) and with possible use of radio-corection channel wih max range from fighter's radar of 50 kms .Second phase is active radar guidance/ARH or active radar homing with use of active radar seeker type 9B1348E or in Russian '9Б1348Э' .So this Russian cyrilic letter Э means E for Export. 9B1348E works in X-band and can lock-on incoming fighter like MiG-21 ( 3 sqm RCS in X-band) from 15 kms. It has HoJ mode. R-77E has laser proximity fuse. With R-77E it is possible to engage target that flies 90° ahead of own fighter and with +/- 10kms altitude difference between fighter and target. R-77E can be launched in two combat modes: inertial-radar guidance in BVR combat ( LOAL ) and only radar guidance in WVR combat ( LOBL).

      Yes, in WVR combat ( close in combat ,so called dogfight) ,R-77/E can be used in radar combat mode ( LOBL- lock-on before launch ) .Pilot can even guide active radar seeker 9B1348/E with his HMS Schel-3UM-1 or Sura-K/M .

    Why are you advertising the old R-77? This has been superseded by the R-77-1 since 2015 which is almost the same but better in every aspect and trials are now ongoing with the R-77M.

      This is promotion material about R-77E as export version of old R-77. There is export version of new R-77-1 ,known as R-77-1E and R-77-1EL( with laser proximity fuse) .PLAAF and IAF were the customers .

      In Russian it is AAM Active and that E is not for Export as many sources wrote ,it is Russian cyrilic letter Ye ( in Russian ''PBB-AE '' ) .

    Marketing an Active Radar homing A-A missile which states the max range as 80km, thus effective kill zone/No Escape Zone certainly being much less than 80km! Where it's western and even Chinese counterparts are easily surpassing the envelope of 100+ even 180km now! No wonder why in recent modern air combat scenarios that have taken place, Russian made platforms have been put in a severe disadvantage facing western (Specially US) origin platforms and their weapon systems.

      @@gmr1111 Another thing is R 37M that you mentioned is kind of a hybrid between an Active and semi active radar homing missile, having both modes along with inertial navigation. While R 27EM, this is a semi active radar homing Missile (Fox 1 's) .
      R 37 and it's variants (including R 37 M) are focused on dealing with large sized non manueverable targets like, Heavy bombers, Strategic or tactical airlifter, AEWACS or mid air refueling tanker's. Against fighter sized tergets its kill probability falls drastically! While R 27ER/EM , being a Fox 1 means not having the fire and forget/shoot scoot capability, which the aircraft enjoys with a Fox 3 (Active radar homing Missiles) such as R 77, R 77-1 or R 77-1M on Russian side, PL 12/SD 10A or PL 15 on Chinese side, AIM 120B, C, C5,C7 or D on US side , MICA of France or Meteor of UK/France/Germany/Italy .
      So again not an impressive weapon package that a third world country can have let's suppose with platform like Su 30SME or Su 35S/SE or Mig 35.

    Seems like the MiG-35 lacks of hardpoints that can bring more confidence to the pilot, maybe the MiG-35 can find more potential clients if they sell it with at least 12 hardpoints and 1 specifically for the external tank.

    Can this be used by a jet fighter to kill a surface to air missile that's been fired at the jet ? From the ukraine situation Russia lost some jets recently and the RuAF hasn't been able to conduct operations above the front-line or further westwards.
    If Russian jets could use this missile to shoot down an coming patriot/ s300 missile you would save a jet fighter and live another day ? An active seeking head means the aircraft could fire its missile then turn back to put distance between itself and the oncoming missile.
    If you could do this jet fighters would now fly in large groups, the air to air missiles of each fighter protecting the group. It would be a numbers game who has more jet fighters moving as a group. Bombers like the Tu Bear could carry them to protect themselves.
    Maybe this system could defeat air to air missiles fired from the other side ?

      What ? RuA&SF is conducting combat oper. every day since start of SMO above the front-line or further westwards ,that's the fact. Su-35S in patrol and SEAD/DEAD missions e.g. fly even three times a day.
      R-77 ( R-77-1 ) against incoming SAM or AAM ?
      Su-35S has PESA N035 Irbis which is capable to detect/track incoming aircraft with RCS of only 0.01 sqm ( VLO , in fact bigger SAM or AAM ) from 100 kms but main factor is its speed. Max speed of SAM e.g. S-300/400 AD system ( SAM of 48N6 family ) is 2km/s and more . 2km/s is more then 7000km/h and max speed of aircraft that can be tracked by Irbis is 6000km/h. So that SAM could be detected/tracked only in passive phase of flight ( terminal phase),reaction time is questionable.

      In fact and indeed the idea was made in the beginning of the 1980's .Idea by two genius engineers and constructors from Moscow's company 'Vympel' G.Sokolovsky and V.Pustovoytov to develop first in the world highly agile and supermaneuverable AAM for BVR combat especially against 9G capable fighters. It was 1982 when development of new AAM under Project name RVV-AE started. Project RVV-AE was in fact second project of these two men ,first was RVV-A called 'Bisector' for short-range /WVR AAM. What was common to both AAM ( Project RVV-A was later rejected ). It was very innovative lattice stabilizers which give AAM phenomenal turn and lateral maneuvering posibilities. AAM developed under Project RVV-AE was intended for the 5th gen Soviet fighter developed under Project MFI. Vympel's designation was Product 170 and military designations were K-77 ( test version ) and R-77 ( serial/operational version ). K-77 was flight tested from 1984 ( on some prototypes of MiG-29) until 1992 when R-77 became operational on MiG-29S ( Product 9.13S). R-77 was officially accepted into RuAF in 1994.
      Those innovative lattice stabilizers are true miracle.They enable R-77/E ( also to newer R-77-1 ) to pull 50G of lateral load in active or passive phase of flight and in comparison with western AAM like Raytheon AMRAAM ,Matra Mica and MBDA Meteor which can not pull over 35G, it is awesome. AoA limitation is 50° vs 35° for AMRAAM,Mica and Meteor and has turn rate (angular speed) od 150°/sec vs no more then 120°/sec of AMRAAM,Mica and Meteor. So we can see that in flight-maneuvering domain ,R-77/E is far better then any western AAM for BVR combat .
      R-77/E has inertial guidance ( strapdown INS with modified proportional closing on mathematicaly modeled fly path ) in first phase ( with use of radio-corection channel) + active radar guidance /ARH in terminal phase .Active radar seeker 9B1348/E works in X band ,has laser proximity fuse and so on . With all of this ,R-77/E is in the level of older versions of AMRAAM ( A,B and C6). Newer R-77-1 has two-way data-link and dual-band radar seeker which is far better then only Ku-band active seeker in AIM-120C7/ D and MBDA Meteor .
      So that idea from the beginning of the 1980's lives even today and makes these AAM phenomenally agile and maneuverable. 9G capable 4th/5th gen fighters must pull 12G in turn maneuver to evade them and I don't know that any fighter or fighter pilot can withstand 12G for some time. So yes, it will be ''Welcome to the 1980s.'' or ''Back to the future ! ''

      ​@@herptim No the R-77 and the 77-1 are not the same. The 77-1 is newer, the Russian air force uses it since 2015 and has scored several kills during the smo. What we are being shown here is the original R-77 from the 90's and it is inferior to the new version in every way.

      @@akosmaradi5281 R-77-1 or Product 170-1 is in serial production from 2015 and is operational from 2016. First public appearance was in february 2016 on Su-35S based in Hmeymim air base in Syria. About SMO ,only two Su-35S fighter-pilots have 7 air victories with them ( they in fact shot down 7 ukr Su-27) with new R-77-1 . Main outside visible difference between old R-77 and new R-77-1 is in rocket engine nozzle .R-77-1 has narrower nozzle and thus more thrust /total impulse .

Besides new solid rocket propellant dual-stage engine which gives R-77-1 more energetic-kinetic potential, there is completely new dual-band radar seeker and that is very inovative. Radar seeker type 9B1103M-200PA has active mode ( ARH that works in Ku-band or in 12-18GHz frequency range) and semi-active mode ( SARH that works in X-band or in 8-12GHz frequency range). Both modes in terminal phase can work simultaneously or separetly. When they work simultaneously it is very hard , almost imposible to jamm them.
      Besides this radar seeker, there is 9B1103M-200PS with active mode and passive radar homing mode.Passive mode works in 7 differ radar bands . This version can be used in radio-silence mode where passive mode is used for guidance on source of radar illumination. R-77-1 has two-way data- link also and has two subversions, one with radar , another with laser proximity fuse..
