Pierre, in my experience, sharing the space with woodworking tools and 3d printers is a terrible idea. I work in wood, acrylics, metals, and 3d printing. The sawdust will gravitate in to the printers and cause you way more headaches than you could ever imagine. Either mvoe the 3d printers into the loft area, or designate a closed off space for the printers and seal it like you would an exterior space. That looks like it will serve you very well as a shop/studio space! It's always exciting to redesign your work flow in a new place!

High five from a fellow procrastinator and overthinker. More often than not it really helps me just to start without a plan and make it up as I go. At least then I get something done instead of nothing.
I’m sure that angle grinder will come in handy before your workshop is complete. I think that the remaining precast base would also look great stood up somewhere as a reminder of the process you are undertaking….kind of a giant medal…..and a piece of industrial history!

Anyway, my suggestion is to put your dust collector outside. Everyone puts them inside but they take up a lot of space and are a huge source of noise, exterior room doesn’t appear to be an issue so why not build a simple enclosure to house it outside the workshop, add a viewing window and some sound proofing and you’ll be set.
This idea comes from a recent visit to a workshop where the owner had done this, it made such a big difference.

id put the dust collector outside in a small shed, keeps all the mess outside, a second floor could be used for photography and 3d printing keeping the space clean. id put ceiling joists across the entire space even if you dont use the whole floor at once, later you can add an elevator to store materials upstairs., and ive learnt over time not to beat myself up about mistakes ive made when doing projects.cheers
Really cool workshop, great potential! Our workshop (mainly cnc oriented, but printing and lasering as well, is about 80m2, so not too big either. Some stuff we figured out over the years: make stuff movable (tables), so you have large open spaces when needed. Storage of plywood: flat, always horizontal. And some tools to move the wood around as well. Really cool project, looking forward to the end.

A maybe cheap floor option - rigid foam insulation with plywood or other wood flooring on top. Insulates the floor, has a little bounce, and gives you options to run electrical under the floor relatively easily. Not going to fit a 100mm dust hose down there, but wiring would fit easily.

My workshop is 7x7m and has the perfect size. Everything is within reach and for all thing that I "never" use. I put in a plastic container and store it in the attic above.

Idea for you: have one or two dust port sweep drops where you can sweep sawdust into it and have it sucked up (or sucked down if you opt for under floor dust collection!). Much more convenient than bending over with a dust pan. I think Rockler sells something like that, but you could probably 3D print something similar. If you had under floor dust collection, you could just cut a narrow rectangular slot in the floor and maybe 3D print a grate that you could sweep sawdust onto.
Just a couple of ideas/suggestions:
- Since its a raw area and unless you are selling it in good condition, just get rid of it. I would have tossed it off the edge to a safer area instead of trying to be careful with it.
- Carve out an area (I’m thinking on a second level) where your dust collection, air compressor, vacuum, etc to keep it out of the way out most of all quieter.
- Run power, air, vacuum, and water (both hot and cold) around via the ceiling. That way you can keep them out of the way and easy access.
- Any lighting that you have make sure it’s either customizable or section off areas to control with separate switches. One switch for everything will limit what you can do.
Just a few ideas I would do. This looks like such a great and fun project.
I do appreciate anyone who admits “faults” as a person or shows their real mistake in thinking. Idk if your actually scared of heights. I am not mostly so I am slanted. But great video overall besides the personal ads. They were just too long. I respect you need the extra money. I get it. And also noticed seemed like little of UA-cam\google adds built in the middle. So ty for that.
You also have to consider, lighting, heating and dust collection. Also, electrical considerations, now and future use. Wall space usages.
I would be making the walls in Ply/ polystyrene/ ply sandwich with a top and bottom plate and studs (verticals ) at 600 centers. make them in 3.6 meter sections, seal the outside against moisture. These are easy to lift and move around and easy to make air tight for insulation__ as a guide it is always much quicker and easier to make sections and install rather than building in place. Looking forward to your progress___ heights rather you than me.
A scissor skylift (saxlyft) could make a cheap elevator.

What an opportunity. I'm really looking forward to seeing what you do with the space.
Looking at the space, I'd be inclined to tackle this as a box within a box project, having the insulated workshop space physically separate from the barn structure, self supporting, with the second level above. For the spans you'd be looking at steel if you wanted to avoid too many pilars in the main space, and new steel will be easier to calculate for the engineer than trying to incorporate the existing barn structure.

My tip for workshop is to make different areas! You do want a dustfree area vs one you do the stuff that creates dust like sanding or other things. Curtains for instance will do it. Also then combine that with how lightning is done. Do you need lighting in the full area or not. Our electricity in sweden aint cheap :D (Yes fellow swede) And as you said about the 2nd floor. Good thinking.. Trust me you want to extra space some day :) Im just doing my extra 80m2 that i never did when i built 10 years ago. but now i need it :D

You are starting a very nice project, good luck. My dream about a future wood shop is similar in size, 50m2 (11m2 today 🙂). As it comes to ideas to think about... I have no idea why all Americans are placing the table saw in the middle of the shop, just keep it in front of the entry door with a space of 2m in front of the blade and push it to the wall on the right. Keep the air "dust free" with a polyester cartridge on your exhauster and an air filter on top of your table saw. Keep the planer on wheels between other higher equipment (band saw) and just move it forward when in use. As it comes to floor, concrete with acrylic cover for durability and dust-free maintenance. Have you thought about in floor radiant heating? That is a big space but radiant heating may be more efficient. You can then cover it with flooring easier on your feet and back.
A lot of hard work done but you did a great job taking it down. This is kind of therapeutic to watch.

I feel your pain. I was once a framer and not afraid of heights, but in my mid forties I fell off a roof! I got lucky with the injuries but now I'm afraid of heights. I know it's in my head, it's as a switch was turned on and I can't find it to turn it off! So now I prefer to do finish carpentry. Hey I built a couple of ukuleles, new territory, well the first took me 160 hrs bc I had to figure everything out for myself.

What a fabulous space you have! I'm with you on working at heights. My toes were curling just watching your video.
My only advice about laying out the workshop areas is to not rush into making decisions (I get the feeling you know this already!). Live with your ideas in your head, perhaps mark out the positions of walls, benches, machinery on the floor. I know you have your model but standing in and moving around the actual space can offer different perspectives.
We moved into our house over a year ago and I have only just placed my table saw and bench/outfeed table in their final positions. I'm sure my wife would put this down to procrastination but I call it decision making...

Watching this video series more closely now. Looks like Ill be having to move my nicely finished 1000 sqft shop to a dank 100 yr old barn half the size, but twice the height. Its going to be a lot of nasty work. Looking forward to see what you do.
Looks like lots of elevation inside. I would put in a false floor 12” deep and run electrical and dust collection inside it. My workshop has a window and I love it!

Hi , great job, hardworking always pays off in the long run, planning ahead, back in the late 60s and early 70s , I hoped a friend take down 5 five grain silos, The ones we took down, we made up sections rings, luckily, we had a gantry gone across the Top, and as for work shop space you can never have enough, please make sure dust extraction is earth, and I don’t know whether you know that some polishes cleaning products, et cetera, if put into a container, especially plastic, there is a chemical reaction where heat builds up, and they will self combust, so a metal dustbin wherever is possible, and lay your polishing rags out, so they can dry out, Definitely if you can afford it, put smoke detectors in, By the looks of it, you’re going to end up with a beautiful workshop and studio. Good luck for the future., PS I’m hoping to lay concrete next week weather, permitting workshop or garage area is only 6 m², a bummer, my work facilities back in the UK was similar to what you’ve got a grain store?, approximately 7 m plus wide and somewhere between 36 to 38 m long., I was producing very large, windows, stairs, kitchens and tables, And I had a warm air blower,

Always love your videos. Looking at the model of your space and this video, seems like you have a lot of ceiling height. I hate working on a cramped space (wish I had your ceiling height). Any way, I would suggest you make your workshop double height and build your video/editing room above that. Then when you are working in your shop it will feel light and airy allowing your creative talent to flourish.
Man, Id make use of the vent in the floor and have some hidden tools that come up out of it when in use. Id run the electrical and air lines in the walls before you cover them up also. And for the floors, the coolest floors I had seen in a shop before were floors totally made of 4x4 (inches) boards set on end. I think they were about 3 or 4 inches long set on end. They were put in fairly tight and with the wood dust and oil from the mechinery being swept over them over and over again there were no cracks after time. Look up end grain wood flooring.

Can't give you any advice since I would have even less of a clue what to do than you, so all I can say is good luck with building and renovating everything!
Making a mini layout to try stuff out is very smart, with my own project I just used paper and cut shapes to move around but with 3d models you get a way better idea on the actual 3D layout than a blueprint.Also can't wait to hear some mooos of your neighbors when you're setup in this shop later.
Pottery studio underneath mezzanine saves you building a ceiling and creates more open space?
Adding windows to the mezzanine would make it a nicer workspace (provided rest of barn gets some windows? (also awesome look over your workshop). Dust collector in outhouse to reduce noise?

Placement of the crosscut saw looks a bit tight. If that is the only wall you want it on I would shift it to one side to accommodate long trims and boards alternatively have a portable setup at hand.
I have about 5 meters on one side and that tends to be about perfect for most things.

Going to flea markets for bibs and bobs and tools is a huge cost saver for me. Im renovating a small farm from the 50s and Im using tools way out of my price range, were they not second hand.

How will you approach insulation for the walls?
I am currently renovating my old garage to a workshop. Big headache with the whole insulation topic, as my garage was build without "luftspalt". To all add it I would have to tare down the entire facade, which was not an option for me. So I went with "öppen diffusion". Have had it for a few weeks, so not sure how it will turn out in the long run.

I'd have kept at least one of those silos and just reduced the height of it, then made the opening larger, turning them into your 3D printer room. Now, on a more serious note, you cut away the truss beam in the roof right at the top of the silos. The problem with that is on a A frame roofing structure that beam is a major part of what holds up your roof. The downwards load force ontop of your roof is supported by the beam that joins the A frame from one side of the structure to the other. Even though at some point some others have been removed the one you removed was in the centre of the structure. The best advice I would give you is to contact a structural engineer regarding your roof and the potential for it collapsing in the future!!!. As always buddy 💯% 👍 🇬🇧.
Will make sure theres enough strength, the one I cut away was attached there to keep the elevator in place so I might get up there and attach something else instead
I see high ceilings, but in your model no tall storage, some hard core shelving system. Pretty sure you'll be able to find a sponsor for such system. And library style sliding ladder would look cool too.

You are going to have to create a lot of sawdust and offcuts to keep that place warm . Either that or let the cows in the workshop. Either way that ceiling height has to come down. Looking forward to the series. ( glad you only found a dead bird and nothing else...)

Always carry an angle grinder. Especially when you are working with old metal.
Just be careful! I know a few persons that have had bad injuries with them!
@@mrboics I know, I am one of them. I was grinding over my head with a big angle grinder and it slipped. Cut through my steel watch band into my wrist. Lucky for the steel band, otherwise I would have cut the artery and tendons.

Give your kids some magnets, they can go and find nails and skrews on the ground.
Nice project. The first thing that came up to me is make a good seperation/ventilation area between your cows and your shop. Cows will give a lot of humidity and ammonia.
That might ruin your tools and your projects.
