Where you were sitting and looking north to the Suspension bridge, was the location of a bridge that was torn down. That location then became the Wheeling island Is Yacht Club. Which eventually shut down. Don't know what they have done with it since.
There is no eastbound ramp from Ohio to WV on I-70. You do have to go through Bridgeport. However there is a westbound ramp coming from WV on I-70 to get onto Wheeling Island. Zane Street Exit. Nice video. You can also get on I-70 east from Wheeling Island but not I-70 West. I guess they figured if you live on the island you can just go to Bridgeport to get on I-70 and that does make sense because there is no ramp for I-70 west on the island. That entire southern tip used to be an amusement park when the wealthy lived on the island.
I was Born in Wheeling in 1940, Lived on the Island until I was 9 yrs old On Front St.I remember the fairgrounds the Island was so Homey then.Of course I didn't see anything I rememered.but I enjoyed the Video Thanks.
Wheeling is my favorite town in the USA . And l drove 7 times across America . It has old town charm , great architecture , the right size and so on . I want to live there . Right music for the drive .
Well, cmon down. /they are building loft apartments like crazy in downtown Wheeling. They are going for a residential community in the business district with all the construction.
@@piotr.leniec-lincow5209 I hear you. I' getting up there also. I doubt I will move again. I'm not against getting out of town but I don't live in a big city. I live in Bellaire Ohio which is about 3.5 miles south of I-70 where it goes through Wheeling. I have worked in the Capitol Theatre and the arena in Wheeling since 1976. Arena wasn't opened until 77.
The suspension bridge closed because people wouldn't obey the weight and height limits. A tour bus caused the last damage. How in the hell can a CDL passenger bus and truck driver not see the huge signs when approaching the bridge. Not to mention the large metal signs that he had to hit on the approach. He just kept going and the bridge has to be shut down for inspection every time something like that happens. It's a historic landmark. That was national road back in the day. Wagons crossed that bridge. It may never again re open to vehicle traffic. It was the gateway to the west.
I'm from wheeling island there use to be a big skating rink that burned down where the big orange things were and also there us to be a go cart racing track by the foot ball field another cool thing if you look from the Ohio side or a drone view of the island its a island one the river
You can get to to the island from the Zane Street Exit on 70 east after passing through Wheeling Tunnel heading west. There is a lot of construction going on the interstate bridge though so it's possible that ramp has been closed during the time this video was made
@@DugrozReports The major construction is about done on the interstate bridges. However the City Wheeling itself is doing a complete downtown make over. the streets in downtown suck because they have already put in entirely new underground utility infrastructure. Gas, water and electric. So after all the new sidewalks, lighting and every thing is in it will be beautiful. I don't know what the actual timeline is but it has got to be at least two years and in phases because it is major renovation.
Did you stop and get a bite to eat at Golden Chopsticks or Godfathers? Wheeling Island floods every 5 years or so. There are markings on one of the buildings by the entrance to the suspension bridge. That's one reason why many homeowners moved elsewhere. Also when the housing projects on the hill in East Wheeling closed, many of the residents moved to the Island. A lot of drugs and prostitution there.
I did not eat anywhere on the island. Back in "Wheeling Proper," I ate dinner at a sportsbar. Can't recall the name, but it had great fries! Lots of things that looked like trading cards on the outside. Right across the street from the "Best Hampton Inn in America." Thanks for watching!
Grew up on the Island. Still live close by. Its a shame you didnt go down south front street. Lots of historic houses and buildings in downtown Wheeling as well. During the 1800s and early 1900s the Island was for the wealthy. Some of the mansions still exist on both front streets.
I wouldnt move to Wheeling if someone gave me a free home there. The Island at one time was really nice. Now way too many drugs, child molesters, shootings and robberies on the Island. Most of Wheeling is a dump.
@DugrozReports Yes it sure is. I was in the Delivery Business up there. It's a Shame what Wheeling has become. Sadly it's full of Low Income People now who don't want to work and the City has provided them with Brand New Homes. I asked a Maintenance Man that worked for WODA and he told me most of them only pay 25 dollars a month. Certain Parts are not a Safe Place to be at at Night Time. There are still some great people who live there in some of the Better Suberb Areas.

Wheeling welcomes you!
I’d love to see you go further north on River Road and do a tour of Warwood.

It’s so sad!!! And I was really disappointed that I couldn’t drive over it!
That driver should have his license yanked …
My dad is from Warwood his house was located at 347 Hazlett Avenue right next to Wheeling Laundry the house was torn down some time ago
Thanks!
They were flooded really bad. They had to close dog track and caasino .that why theree is still water around on the ground.😮
Wheeling, WV - I like this town!
Seems like a very cool old town. Not sure if I'd want to live there? But very cool to visit.

Could be!!!
I messed up when I said at the very beginning it was the "only" way on or off.
How are things in Wheeling now?

I could tell that once upon a time some of those houses were top tier!
Thanks 💐❤️🌿👍
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching.
The houses are built high off of the ground. I'm guessing that's because of the history of floods.
Seems probable
The huge houses are great architecture, but all I can think of are the massive heating bills!
Many are very beautiful, but it's too bad so many are crumbling.
These large homes are not usually heated 100 percent. Half of the rooms might be closed off.
Might be better suited to leave music off so as not to struggle hearing your comments. I have a friend on N Front street. Thanks for the vid
Very cool! And I will keep the volume comment in mind. (In theory, getting a camera with a better mic would help too!!!)

Thank you for this tour.
I just want to see Indian area..
💟💟💟 From Indonesia ...🇮🇩
you are welcome. Is there an Indian area in Wheeling?
@@DugrozReports i dont know...
In the 1700s Wheeling Island was entirely an Indian area.
Yes they still race.Greyhounds
Like every city, Wheeling has slums and mansions. Depends on what part of town you are in.
Good point!
Hello from Wheeling 👋🏼
👋🏼👋🏼👋🏼
Great little tour of the island, but that music is annoying AF ! 😖
Sorry. I like the old style music helps me relax. Thanks for commenting!
I was on one of the bikes
:o
Spiritualists are big on seances, messages from beyond, etc.
Thanks for clarifying.
I saw my truck
Woah! Where at!??
Observant u are..
Wheeling, West Virginia looks like a run-down industrial slum
Kind of. Wheeling looks like it was upper crust at one time, but has seen better days.
Aren’t you sweet?
