Riot nerfed support item a few patches ago so that you can't have 2 support items on team. A patch later they bugged it back to how it was originally. The idea is to get first item, finish haunt guise or blasting+amp tome, sell dring if you went it or just start out with sapphire crystal+refillable. Buy world atlas after that. You will lose about 300gold on the deficit but you'll get to 3 items + finish support item around 25mins giving you a harder 4 item spike. Getting to your 5th item isn't really slowed as you gain an extra item faster and can start building to the 5th item faster. The support item when finished is about 1300gold value effect +800g it gives you so you're sitting on a 2k gold efficient item (more efficiency with more wards).

​@@cruetusnexLess necessity to farm, and more of an excuse to group up and support the team. You're better off making the enemy team's game a living hell putting them behind than farming yourself evenly with them. The support item lets you do both.
