It was also used by many other stations, especially during the 1970's and '80s by WPIX-TV (Channel 11) in New York when they used the Action News format (though sped up and without the vocals).
I came to Philadelphia for a training class back in 2001, and the first time I watched Action News, I fell in love with the theme. I'm absolutely thrilled that WPVI is still using MCTYW after all these years.
This. So fucking much this. That bumper is the most memorable and chilling special report music (second only to what NBC uses). They should have never stopped using it for breaking news.
Enjoy your retirement Jim Gardner, we’ll miss you!!! Whenever I’m in Philly, I have a cheesesteak, a pizza or a hoagie and watch Action News… it will no longer be the same without you Jim 🥲 I’ve watched you from the beginning!!!
Real inviting, attention- getting theme from the 1970's onwards, memorable from WPVI Philadelphia. This theme, had and has, great cred throughout the Delaware Valley and Brandywine Valley. There was also an abridged version of this theme at Action News with WTNH, New Haven CT.
At 0:21 “Nightline is next on Channel 6. Action News continues at 6am with Monica Malpass, Rick Williams, and Dave Frankel. Now for Gary Papa, Dave Roberts, and the entire Action News team, I’m Jim Gardner, have a good night tonight❗️” Keep this going❗️
not only that, this should be entered into the Guinness Book of World Records for the LONGEST-RUNNING use of a news theme at any station in America. News themes and logos come and go, all just to find NEW ways to attract audiences. But the MCTYW and the 6 logo withstood the test of time.
I lived in Philadelphia in the early 90s and this theme song whisked me back to my childhood watching Action News on WPIX New York. The same song as Action News WPVI. Great memories. The bumper is the best part!
I've always appreciated the fact that Channel 6 (yes, I'm old enough when it was just Channel 6) uses the entire 4 bars of the key change in the bumper loop. I've heard the other stations bumpers and they always sounded lame by only using the last 2 bars over and over. Also, to note, OPEN A and the bumper are a half step higher in Bb from the original A. This was part of the reversion of 96 when they dropped the LSO opening. 615 came in and tweaked the original Cut 1 from '72 by raising it up a half step and adding the low brass choir to it. They essentially were trying to do away with the 70's bongos because they were dated in the 90's.
THIS is real musicianship right here. I’ve always wondered why the Open and the Bumper were in different keys, especially when the original ran though all of it in A Major. Also, if you notice, the singers are actually singing with the intro melody from the original version. Something I was yesterday days old when I first found out, having finally listened to it closely.
In that part I can hear what sounds like a marble rattling in a jar. Way way in the background. Very subtle. I'm guessing you detect it since you're a musician. Anyway, I suck at music. I'm curious what is making that sound. Is it electronic?
My brother lives in Del Val and I have always enjoyed this theme! As a musician, this song is probably the most enjoyable news theme I have ever heard and it doesn't get old. My favorite part is the bumper for sure.

You're not wrong, it sounds like 615 Music made that, the instruments sound similar to their other packages like High Velocity, Impact, or Newswire, maybe cause' they are the same ones.
@@friesareyummy And indeed you are correct. WPVI reached out to 615 Music in the interest of commissioning a package to contrast the music heard during regular broadcasts back in the early 2000s.
