My favorite thing about Super Heroes is how the story changes majorly depending on not only which character you pick, but also the difficulty you pick. Like how everyone is basically a Saturday morning cartoon character in easy mode but on harder difficulties the plot starts becoming more complex and the villains start becoming morally grey and even the plot twists are different.
Super Heroes and Astro Boy: Omega Factor show that when they actually care to Treasure can do some really interesting things with game stories.

I bought this game when it came out and it was amazing... pretty much a perfect 16-bit action game. One of the things that really impressed me about it is the amount of random calls the devs included with the boss battles. Their patterns and the order of attacks would randomly change with every fight, so you had a slightly different experience each time you fought the same boss! You think you've gotten the boss' pattern down to a t? Nope, it's different the next time! This was an incredible feature and is one thing that not enough people bring up when talking about this masterpiece.

Love me some Gunstar Heroes. Probably the best purchase I've made for the system. Always wanted it as a kid and only got to play it once. Got my own copy about 15 years ago and it's never leaving my possession. Treasure are videogame magicians. Working on a vid about one of their games now if I ever get done editing it.

Had a family vacation when I was in high school, and I remember being in love with Gunstar Super Heroes (I played the original on Sega when I was much younger and loved that one too). I actually decided to go through the game and beat it with every single weapon and weapon combination; including only melee. That was some good fun. Gunstar Heroes is still one of my favorite games. Over the last Christmas season, I actually played it with my dad on the Switch, and he was like "Wow, I remember this game, we played the crap out of it when you were a kid." :D

    Ahh Gunstar Heroes :)
I never did own this game personally, but my friends across the street did when we were kids. We finished it one sitting and moved onto Dashin' Desperadoes. Then we went back to my place and played Streets of Rage 1 and 2. We had a lot of great times growing up playing games in one sitting from that point on, Gunstar Heroes was the literal the start of it.

Gunstar Future Heroes has got some absolutely jaw-droppingly good graphics for a GBA game. Like yourself Dan, despite being a Megadrive owner back in the day, the original somehow passed me by and the GBA version was my first experience of this great series. If you're a Treasure fan, I'd highly, highly recommend checking out Astro Boy: Omega Factor on the GBA, it's equally just as stunning looking and also plays great too.

It's worth mentioning that Guardian Heroes and Advance Guardian Heroes are set within the Gunstar Heroes universe.

      Huh, that's pretty interesting. How?

    • @SaturnMemories
      @SaturnMemories 8 років тому +9

ColonelSandwich They're quasi-prequels. Guardian Heroes takes place in the distant past while Advance Guardian Heroes takes place centuries later, closer to the time of Gunstar Heroes. Both GH and GSH feature characters named Gray (Kanon the Gray and Emperor Gray) who share somewhat similar fates. Kanon builds Golden Silver who, of course, is the ultimate boss in Gunstar Heroes. Randy's master in Guardian Heroes is called Mannon F. Brown. Professor Brown from Gunstar Heroes is likely his descendant. Furthermore, a younger Professor Brown also appears in Advance Guardian Heroes.

Saturn Memories I find it cool that they linked both of those games up in a coherent manner. What's next, Ikaruga is actually followup to Radiant Silvergun?!

ColonelSandwich It's not, the characters he mentioned are like how Cid ends up being in every Final Fantasy game. They're just in jokes for fans of the game. Guardian heroes is in no way set in the Gunstar universe.

I didn't discover it until I bought Super Gunstar Heores on a whim for GBA as a teenager. Inspired me to dig up many of Treasures previous master pieces (especially Alien Soldier/Sin and Punishment), and the original. Good times. Lol SEGA began to "royally fuck it up," couldn't have said it better. Really happy there was at least one person at SEGA with good taste and an eye for talent though. Another great video.

Very well done. Like you, I completely missed Gunstar Heroes the first time around. On top of that, the game didn't click with me the first few times I played it. I knew it was good, but I couldn't see why it was great. I went back to it, and it suddenly became amazing to me, which was great since I love amazing Genesis/Mega Drive games. I'm glad I saw what so many others do. It's so true about the different play styles it allows too. I seem to be in the minority, but I much prefer fixed shot. Free shot has its upside, but I found boss fights to be maddening without fixed, so I insist on that. I had no prior experience with the series when the GBA game came out, but I had the good sense to listen to reviews and recommendations and picked it up when it was new, also in support of Sega publishing games of that sort. It stayed in my backlog for a while, but I ended up really loving it when I got around to it. Incidentally, I finally got to it right after playing one of the Metal Slug games.

Gunstar heroes is an all time classic for me. But honestly, Gunstar Super Heroes.. it stands at the very same level for me. Why? Mainly because Gunstar Heroes original itself gave me some forever memorable experiences and holy hell did I work myself up to beat the max difficulty. Now why don't I argue about Gunstar Super Heroes? Because honestly, while the original is more well rounded in levels, this one makes uip for it in game play fluency. The bosses are the biggest joy to fight of almost any game I ever played, specially in the hardest difficulty. In that difficulty, I had the most *epic* battles of all time *EVER*, on which not only was the epicness coming from the soundtrack, the boss itself, the situation, no, it was the skills required, the gameplay itself made it feel like I was doing the impossible. The fight with Seven Force keeps you on your toes on the hardest difficulty, and it requires deep knowledge of the super guns to beat, as in when to use them to maximum effect and how to charge them effectively. Trying to mow down Seven Force in any iteration with simple gun blasts in the hardest difficulty is like trying to cut steel with a knife. Yet it is the last round of bosses before the fight with Golden Silver reborn which is the most epic and fun of all, as it requires for you to have absolute control of the fluency of movement. You have to be precise and abuse the movemt dashes of ALL your attacks, be it dahes, jump kicks, wall kicks, you need all of them and you need to execute them perfectly to beat the bosses. It was the biggest yet most fun challenge I had had in any game ever and thats why I can overlook the bland enemy segments and the helicopter segment.. ugh.. main reason I don't really let it win over Gunstar Heroes.. In any case, that game gave me the most memorable epic battles I ever had, and it will remain in a pedestal with his predecesor for all time for it in my book.

man, Gunstar Heroes was easily my favorite Genesis game of all time! that's definitely one game I regret ever getting rid of... I have it on Wii Virtual Console but I definitely miss my original copy. (oh and also on Steam after SEGA gave it away earlier this year as part of a promotion.)
I also had the GBA sequel but can't for the life of me figure out where my old system and games disappeared to :( It did feel more like a remake of the original than a straight-up sequel but that doesn't make it any less of a good game!!
this was a great video and it's making me want to fire it up again later!

I don’t remember how I required it, but this is one game for the Sega Genesis, that I as a kid owned and loved playing it.
A lot of action, a lot of tension, and the screen never really slowed down too much when it was filled up with all the characters and explosions and things moving around, but I liked all four of the starter levels.
I definitely liked how you could switch up the different weapon modes to create different ways of firing your weapon.
And to me, probably one of the best video games soundtracks for the Sega Genesis, hands down.
It obviously might have been techno type music because the game was spacey and action packed and all that stuff, but not only was each song so creatively and impressively put together, it’s like every single individual song told its own story.
So I have a ‘favorites’ West on here, on UA-cam, which is my general song list, and I’m like a lot of my other friends who would probably have thousands of songs from several albums of some of the same bands, depending on my taste in music, like how the music itself actually sounds or the beat of the song or the band that I like, my music list is filled up with random songs and it’s about 150 songs or less that I just repetitively listen to every day and I never get tired of it.
But a handful of those songs are songs from other video game soundtracks overtime, to name a handful….Sonic the Hedgehog 1, 2, 3 and Sonic and Knuckles, Castlevania’s 1 and 2, Fester’s Quest, F-Zero, the 1st and 3rd Mortal Kombat games, Silent Hill’s 1-4, Intelligent Qube, 3 Xtreme, and several other songs from other earlier video games in my childhood but the ones that really stood out to me, and the ones I mentioned above or just a handful.
This game though, had one of those soundtracks that I enjoy listening to whenever I come to a track from this game on my favorites list because I always shuffle it.

Isn't Alien Soldier a spiritual sequel to Gunstar Heroes? It has a lot of similar stuff (weapons are pretty much the same for example) and it also focuses on the most exciting part of GH - the boss battles.
Gunstar Super Heroes is more like a reimagining of the original game.

Very nice video Daniel, excellent work. There also one more game that was not directly related but heavily influenced by this series, Gunners Heaven / Rapid Reload on the PS1. It reviewed poorly in the early 'everything must be 3D' PlayStation days but it's another gem for sure.

I don't think it would be as popular a video, but a Complete History of the Shining series (the one that started with Shining in the Darkness, on the Megadrive) would be really cool. ;) Great episode, by the way!

congrat-u-fucking-lations on an amazing channel. Seriously. Just when I thought everything was on youtube I went on a binge on this channel. You found a missing hole and your passion for the the old games is outstanding. I got into gaming when my mum programmed educational games for me on the ZX spectrum and to listen to a guy who talks about the old days makes my nerd hairs tingle.Just when I thought everything was on youtube I found your channel. Hats off sir,..

I think the SNES game that comes closest to replicating the chaos of Gunstar Heroes is Rendering Ranger R2. It's rare and expensive unless you use repros, but it's worth trying out.

Superb video Daniel. You've got to love the run n' gun genre and Gunstar Heroes is definitely one of the standouts. Have you ever played Rapid Reload on the ps1? it's very much a Gunstar clone but a really enjoyable one at that.
I'm glad you covered the gba title as I've always felt it was criminally overlooked.
Any chance of a retrospective covering the Contra series? it's always been my favourite run n' gunner series and the Megadrive title was always a bit of a standout for me and yes I did like it more than Gunstar Heroes.

One thing you didn't mention, is the fact that the last boss of Gunstar Heroes ... is also in Guardian Heroes. That Weird Silver/Gold Robot existed in two versions there ... one with the 4 Crystals floating around and one without. And even better, you cold select both in the Multiplayer mode ;p
