My Dad passed away from cancer 4 years ago and this song came up on UA-cam and I balled. He loved the water and fishing. We lived on the bay of Galveston TX. I think about him every time I hear this song 💜
The only frustration I've really ever had with this band is that quite honestly, I've consistently liked their b-sides more than some of the ones that made it to the album haha.. God I love these guys..
Such a prolific band, never afraid to change direction to keep it interesting for themselves and always leave you wanting more. I've never been happier since they came back from their hiatus.
Let's be fair....TBEITBN wasn't missing anything...but this is an incredible b-side. I also got the FoD feeling immediately and feel a bit of Disarmed...it's beautiful :)
Sunny Mittal Exactly. It's a stunning sculpture which needs no additions or subtractions, but can and should be admired from all angles. Also, it maybe successfully supplemented by nearby works which are thoughtfully placed in relation to it (hence this song, which lacks nothing, IMO).
Yeah I agree this is beautiful, but sooooo many thrice songs are beautiful. I agree also that TBEITBN wasn't missing anything either though. Their "red telephone" b-side should have been on an album also. Everything they create and feel themselves resonates deeply with me... and all of you too I suppose :)
So brilliantly simple. Gorgeous. Love when Dustin does that lower husky vocal. So haunting. Reminds me of a cross of red sky and open water. Very 'water disc' .Thrice will always be the best 👌👌
Lyrics: We scoff and roll our eyes Yeah, we've heard this all before in a different guise These shrill alarmist fears We don't deign to entertain them, covering our ears So where will we go when the waters threaten to wash us away? And all of our sons and our daughters wilt in the heat of the day? I feel the sun draw nearer, I feel the sea start to rise Who's looking back in the mirror? Why are they closing - Why are they closing their eyes? Now that heavy curtain sways And the man who stands behind tries to give his name So we ask ourselves, "Who stands to gain?" Soon our tired talking points are feeling awfully strained So where will we go when the waters threaten to wash us away? And all of our sons and our daughters wilt in the heat of the day? I feel the sun draw nearer, I feel the sea start to rise Who's looking back in the mirror? Why are they closing - Why are they closing their eyes? So where will we go when the waters threaten to wash us away? And all of our sons and our daughters wilt in the heat of the day? I feel the sun draw nearer, I feel the sea start to rise Who's looking back in the mirror? Why are they closing - Why are they closing their eyes? Why are we closing, why are we closing our eyes? Why are we closing, why are we closing our eyes? Why are we closing, why are we closing our eyes? Why are we closing, why are we closing our eyes?
The song can broadly be interpreted to be about the uncertainty of death and not knowing what our future holds. And the insecurity and fear that comes with that. Everyone feels that way from time to time... It reminds me of the movie Melancholia, which is about (existential) anxiety told through a giant planet approaching and colliding with earth. We do try to ignore it, but death will come to us all some day. So we might as well open our eyes, uncover our ears, accept the inevitable, and face death with no fear.
Oh^ that's really sad, Colton. I thought it might be, if you take it literally, it sounds like that. It's sad though because it ruins the song, imo. It becomes too heavy handed. Also it's sad because it implies that people who don't think we play a significant role in climate change are ignorant and don't look at research, typically it just means they look at research not funded by government or cronies; not funded by those who have something to gain by misleading the public.
Yeah, funded by YUGE businesses that have a lot to lose from accepting the truth. Governments have almost nothing to gain from climate change. #MakingAmericaStupidAgain
That's because those people are absolutely ignorant and listen to "research FUNDED by government or cronies; FUNDED by those who have something to gain by misleading the public." Geez, the only political party on the planet that denies climate change is funded massively by the conglomerates doing the destructive actions. Can't imagine why they would try to tell people we shouldn't take care of the planet and not to listen to 98% of the scientists on the planet. You are the person this song is written about, and that is why it "ruins it" for you.
Altough I've been listening to TBEITBN for a whole year now, I never knew this song existed. I'm listening to it right now for the 5th time now, and try not to fucking cry.
My Dad passed away from cancer 4 years ago and this song came up on UA-cam and I balled. He loved the water and fishing. We lived on the bay of Galveston TX. I think about him every time I hear this song 💜
@@brandonspeich3483 I'm sorry. But it's really nice to have a song, that brings back so much good memories of a loved one. Art is probably the best thing to happen to us, and for many it's Thrice
It has a very ocean-like atmosphere and sound by delivering the title of the song. That minimalistic repetition from 3:23 to the end is really soothing and blissful. Love it.
Sat in the ER waiting to find out the news, and I'm listening to this and watching all the sad people come in & out with their various issues. Brings tears to my eyes. Love one another!!!! I love you thrice wish this song would have been in the vinyl version I bought.
Such a bold song! I love this band, thank you Thrice! Dustin's lyrics have always challenged the beauty of complex ideas in simple or bold statements. This band continually brings humanity's good and evil to light and they do an amazing job to help alleviate and open eyes.
Although I love TBEITBN, I can't get my head around how this didn't make the album. I'd go as far as saying it's my favourite track [that wasn't] on the album
Time to see the big picture and time look up. Getting caught up in the divide and distractions won't do anybody any good "For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places."
Man, how does Dustin's singing voice get cooler and cooler album after album. Just turned 30 today, and it's crazy to think I first saw these fellas when I was 16 in Fort Worth. Rock on!
For me, there's a play on words here - sea change/see change. The refrain (why are they/we closing our eyes) might therefore be referring to our apprehension or ambivalence towards confronting problems that face our society (global warming) or ourselves as individuals...
Rodolfo Loredo No need to be So mean... And its not too obvious because the phrase "Sea Change" refers to a drastic change. So if he saw a play on words, well that might not have been obvious to everyone. So respectfully, get off your high horse.
or more like the masses are easily swayed by the media into false dichotomies like Anthropogenic Global Warming vs Alarmism What if instead we ask WHO STANDS TO GAIN - he's not talking about BIG OIL. The man behind the curtain is the MEDIA and THE ESTABLISHMENT trying to FEAR MONGER people into a tax scam TECHNOCRACY. The people are being put to blame for a paper tiger they were never responsible for.
This song is awesome. I understand why it was a b side though, has a different vibe than the rest of TBEITBN. Glad to finally be able to buy it though my local record store didn't have it!
Arya Stark I like this song a lot, but the overall tone of tbeitbn is what made it so impactful, I think this could have watered it down a bit (no pun intended). I can't wait to see these guys again and hear what's next from them.
This song is certainly calmer and more peaceful than the songs that made the record. I see why it didn't make it but I'd fucking die for a full record of b-sides like this one.
I wonder where this would have gone on the album. I think the reason it ended up as a B-side is because its an album closer, much like Red Sky, but they chose Salt & Shadow because its was written with the phrase "To Be Everywhere Is To Be Nowhere" ingrained in it. Either way, phenomenal track.
simple chord progressions but so brilliantly addressed with instruments. Complexity within simplicity..... I still don't feel too well about whatever the hell is up with the effects on Dustin's vocals.... It feels like a pitch correction but with rasp. Maybe his vocals were compressed too much and seem inhuman..... idk. I love this song to bits, even if I slightly disagree with the meaning.

Thrice b-sides never disappoint.

Kenny Flores I don't think ANY thrice song does
They should just release everything they do, haha. Absolutely. There b-sides are far better than most bands best songs.
Just throwing it out there, but I'd love to see them take on a film score. Can you imagine the sonic perfection?
It will probably happen some time in the future, maybe not in our lifetimes though :/
Such a prolific band, never afraid to change direction to keep it interesting for themselves and always leave you wanting more. I've never been happier since they came back from their hiatus.
This is what TBEITBN was missing. Seems in the vein of Red Sky and Flags of Dawn in the best way.
All these years, and Thrice still gives me chills.
It's missing that build up though.

Dustin Kensrue, thanks for exist.
underrated song by them... easily top 10 in my book.
Thrice is the best band ever! 🔥But you need to go listen to Whispering Wolf by SLT right now ! You’re missing out 🤘🐺🥁////////

Dustin said it was about climate change and climate change deniers.

Why is this band so dam good and not insanely popular? 😆 Maybe it's the system
+1...have always wondered why.

Rock kinda stopped charting by the end of the 2010s I think. That probably explains part of why

So glad this is going up online, and not just the Record Store Day release! Thank you!
I just ... I have no words. To goosebumps.
Absolutely love this 110%

Thrice is known for withholding exceptional material from their LP's. Flags of Dawn is another fan favorite.

Such an different song than what I would of expected. Really gentle and calming in the best way. Then the pickup towards the end. Love this song.
I love his voice so much, I wish I could sing like that. Great song!
Gorgeous piece of work! Will always love Thrice!
Thrice! You've done it again!
This song would have fit nicely on the album between Whistleblower and Salt and Shadow.
These guys can do no wrong. So damn good.
perfect for this night
Really cool to see how they've developed over the years
Agreed
Beautiful, as always.

Good song! I definitely get a bit more of his latest solo album on this song, but that was excellent, so i am happy.

Hey I'm early for once
So how did his vocals get raspy?
it is definitely on their basic song list, but darn, don't they mandate even the simplest of songs to sound amazing?

what happened to the old thrice?
Kracker they evolved theres no point in making more albums if you keep making the same album over and over
obviously no one wants that, theres not even a remnant of thrice left.
Old thrice turned into better thrice
Trevor Iverson old thrice turned into, pop/light rock/folk wack ass thrice. I've been here since "identity crisis" dropped and let me say this shit isn't even in the same ballpark.

Took me an entire year to realise that this is Halo by Beyoncé. Still love it.
This is a great song but I can see why it became a B-Side, it's almost too reminscant of Dustin's solo work
