My Dad passed away from cancer 4 years ago and this song came up on UA-cam and I balled. He loved the water and fishing. We lived on the bay of Galveston TX. I think about him every time I hear this song 💜

The only frustration I've really ever had with this band is that quite honestly, I've consistently liked their b-sides more than some of the ones that made it to the album haha.. God I love these guys..

This is what TBEITBN was missing. Seems in the vein of Red Sky and Flags of Dawn in the best way.

Let's be fair....TBEITBN wasn't missing anything...but this is an incredible b-side. I also got the FoD feeling immediately and feel a bit of Disarmed...it's beautiful :)
Sunny Mittal Exactly. It's a stunning sculpture which needs no additions or subtractions, but can and should be admired from all angles. Also, it maybe successfully supplemented by nearby works which are thoughtfully placed in relation to it (hence this song, which lacks nothing, IMO).
Yeah I agree this is beautiful, but sooooo many thrice songs are beautiful. I agree also that TBEITBN wasn't missing anything either though. Their "red telephone" b-side should have been on an album also.

Reading the lyrics, seems like it has to do with global warming... but I know Dustin's lyrics can have multiple meanings.

The song can broadly be interpreted to be about the uncertainty of death and not knowing what our future holds. And the insecurity and fear that comes with that. Everyone feels that way from time to time... It reminds me of the movie Melancholia, which is about (existential) anxiety told through a giant planet approaching and colliding with earth. We do try to ignore it, but death will come to us all some day. So we might as well open our eyes, uncover our ears, accept the inevitable, and face death with no fear.
Dustin said it was about climate change and climate change deniers.
Oh^ that's really sad, Colton. I thought it might be, if you take it literally, it sounds like that. It's sad though because it ruins the song, imo. It becomes too heavy handed. Also it's sad because it implies that people who don't think we play a significant role in climate change are ignorant and don't look at research, typically it just means they look at research not funded by government or cronies; not funded by those who have something to gain by misleading the public.
Yeah, funded by YUGE businesses that have a lot to lose from accepting the truth. Governments have almost nothing to gain from climate change. #MakingAmericaStupidAgain
That's because those people are absolutely ignorant and listen to "research FUNDED by government or cronies; FUNDED by those who have something to gain by misleading the public." Geez, the only political party on the planet that denies climate change is funded massively by the conglomerates doing the destructive actions. Can't imagine why they would try to tell people we shouldn't take care of the planet and not to listen to 98% of the scientists on the planet. You are the person this song is written about, and that is why it "ruins it" for you.
This band makes my feels work
Such a prolific band, never afraid to change direction to keep it interesting for themselves and always leave you wanting more. I've never been happier since they came back from their hiatus.
You could slap this on the Water album and it'd fit in swell (pun)

So brilliantly simple. Gorgeous. Love when Dustin does that lower husky vocal. So haunting. Reminds me of a cross of red sky and open water. Very 'water disc' .Thrice will always be the best 👌👌

It has a very ocean-like atmosphere and sound by delivering the title of the song.
That minimalistic repetition from 3:23 to the end is really soothing and blissful.

Gorgeous. I think that TBEITBN, while fantastic, could've used more songs like this to break up the heaviness of the album overall.
Arya Stark I like this song a lot, but the overall tone of tbeitbn is what made it so impactful, I think this could have watered it down a bit (no pun intended). I can't wait to see these guys again and hear what's next from them.

For me, there's a play on words here - sea change/see change. The refrain (why are they/we closing our eyes) might therefore be referring to our apprehension or ambivalence towards confronting problems that face our society (global warming) or ourselves as individuals...

simple chord progressions but so brilliantly addressed with instruments. Complexity within simplicity..... I still don't feel too well about whatever the hell is up with the effects on Dustin's vocals.... It feels like a pitch correction but with rasp. Maybe his vocals were compressed too much and seem inhuman..... idk. I love this song to bits, even if I slightly disagree with the meaning.
I wonder where this would have gone on the album. I think the reason it ended up as a B-side is because its an album closer, much like Red Sky, but they chose Salt & Shadow because its was written with the phrase "To Be Everywhere Is To Be Nowhere" ingrained in it. Either way, phenomenal track.
This is a great song but I can see why it became a B-Side, it's almost too reminscant of Dustin's solo work

Such a bold song! I love this band, thank you Thrice! Dustin's lyrics have always challenged the beauty of complex ideas in simple or bold statements. This band continually brings humanity's good and evil to light and they do an amazing job to help alleviate and open eyes.
Man, how does Dustin's singing voice get cooler and cooler album after album. Just turned 30 today, and it's crazy to think I first saw these fellas when I was 16 in Fort Worth. Rock on!

Kracker same. I have all their CD’s this CD is more musically mature. You can tell they have become better musicians. But I also won’t deny that they killed it playing punk back in the day, I wouldn’t call this pop though. Alt. Rock for sure. And it has folk influence. After all. Dustin’s solo stuff and worship songs are very folky
