after throwing now for a couple of years, coming back to your videos. you sir have a very effective no nonsense way of doing the job and doing it right ! In my apprentice opinion.
What a genuine pleasure to watch you at work! Need to say thanks to the infinite patience and talent of Tama Smith of Prairie Fire Pottery when we were neighbors, I've successfully thrown 4 cylinders on a kick wheel... only 996 more to go :-) before I can attempt an actual structure. I'm checking now for more of your videos!
Whoever keeps zooming in so it's out of focus and his hands aren't in frame, please stop. We need to see things in focus and we need to see his hands. He's a lovely teacher and worth capturing every detail.
thanks very much, it is great and informative. We are very much looking forward to part two (saw your response to the previous comment). I will attempt to re-create your technique today, and improvise with putting it all together
Holy crap, that was amazing! Sadly, I'm not aware of anyone where I live that is as good as you that could help me learn. I live in the Unites States near Atlanta.
Hi Really enjoy watching the way you work, clear, no fuss and after watching this I managed to make a teapot for the first time 😃so thank you 👍🏻👍🏻I’ve searched your videos and can’t find the one you mentioned about putting the teapot together, would be great to see it if you did do one?
Hi Pip, really pleased you got something from the video. I have to confess to not doing the “sticking the teapot together” video. It’s pretty straightforward though and I think there are plenty of people demonstrating how to put handles and spouts on. Lee
@@leecartledge hi! Yes I’ve been having a nose and there’s always something on here 😊 again thanks for the videos, will be working my way through them. 👍🏻
Really nice demo, I have never seen a gallery formed like that before, I like it. Nice tool you used for trimming, where did you get it, please? Cheers Bob 🇬🇧
Hi Sandra, I have to admit to never uploading one. I guess I gave up putting up videos, because there are so many on UA-cam. When I do spouts I make sure the spout is quite soft when it goes on. This makes it very easy to smooth into the body of the teapot. Best wishes. Lee
Sorry for taking a year to reply! I’m not great with social media. I have to confess to not making the said video of teapot assembly. To be honest it’s pretty easy and there are plenty of videos of people sticking on handles and spouts. Lee
It enables you to get your hand inside the pot without catching the gallery and then when you flip it over it gives a nice narrow diameter. I first saw Ray Finch demonstrating the technique years ago.
Shouldn’t the spout be tapered so the liquid moves in one direction? Not perfectly cylindrical for if it is, your water, tea, Cream etc, will just come out in any direction around the spout.
lee cartledge is it a specific type of knife? I'm trying to use a different tool because I'm using the wood one to trim the bottom while I throw but I don't like it I have a lot of trouble with it and yours looks like it does a way better job! :)
+Samara Saca it's sold in the uk as a potters knife. It's basically a plastic handle with a triangular blade. You'd be able to buy one from potclays in Stoke.
lee cartledge I am having a hard time finding one in the US, do you have a link to one? I'm searching lik crazy, it looks like a game changer of a tool versus the wooden tool I have been using for the bottom.
+lee cartledge It will be better to just leave the camera hook to a tripod, and leave the focus on your hands and what you are modeling on the wheel, so in that way is easier for the viewers to appreciate more the technique. Zooming in and out can be challenging, mostly if the camera has an automatic focus system. Thanks again for the video, the information is awesome!
+Susana Reyes Mejía I'll attempt to re shoot this next year. I guess my main problem is i'm relying on iphones, ipads and still cameras to shoot my videos. I really need to invest in a good camera and tripod! Come and do a pottery course with me, I will soon have you making teapots!

Every time I come back to making teapots, I review this again. Always valuable. Would still love to see how you assemble it all...
I guess Im pretty off topic but do anyone know of a good place to stream new tv shows online?

finally someone who gives an actual technique tip for making a gallery
Glad to be of service!
I thought this was an absolutely brilliant demo and - as a complete self-taught newbie - I am much more confident in learning to throw!

Brilliant tutorial (and in 7 minutes!!!) Impressive. Thank you
I would really love to see how you put all this together. your video was very informative
I keep meaning to do this but i'm just inundated with teaching at the moment!
@@leecartledge I’m pretty sure the clay is at least leather-hard by now so you can assemble it :)
I guess I should video me assembling one. To be honest they’re easy to stick together, it’s the throwing that’s hard
@@leecartledge Haha, I have hard time visualizing things, so I hella find it easy to throw, but hard to assemble.
Great video, clear and no nonsense. I’m about to make my first teapot. Thank you.

what should be the credit limit of the card?
You make it look so easy...
It’s really just spending a lot of time throwing.

That is some distance! I would be delighted to teach you one day!
AJohnson0325 same here
That was really good, thanks for posting. Unfortunately I can't find part 2 where you fit it all together.
The dangers of promising a sequel video and not producing it. I will try and do something about this at some stage.
Nice. Fast, confident, no messing around. I like it. I also like the home made plywood bats. Splinters?
Never had a splinter. I use 9mm marine ply cut on a band saw
That credit card trick is amazing!
this is so impressive thank you! using this to reference my own teapot today in pottery class :)
That was cool. Thanks for sharing!
What a master, makes it look so easy
That is one heck of a huge teapot! Very interesting video.

👏🏻Eureka moment for me when the external gallery went internal Thanks!’🎉

Its just a bog standard turning tool. I probably bought it from Potterycrafts, or Potclays in Stoke
How fast is he?! Beautiful to watch!
awesome! thank you for this
I'm having trouble finding your follow-up video on attaching the spout. Interested in a lesson from you vs. someone elses method.

this really helped me make my first teapot! could you help me find the video teaching how to attach all the pieces?
Did you find another YT video showing you how to do this?
@@kadensmike8190 I did! I either found another video or intuitively did it on my own. thank you!

Brilliant technique. Thanks. Is there a follow up to cover assembly of the teapot?
I will eventually. To be honest sticking em together is pretty straight forward. It's just scoring, cutting and smoothing.
Why the outside gallery flip to inside, instead of creating the inside gallery directly?
It enables you to get your hand inside the pot without catching the gallery and then when you flip it over it gives a nice narrow diameter. I first saw Ray Finch demonstrating the technique years ago.
one piece lid! love it.
hello mister Lee.Did you use youre moterbike engine to use it for the turntable? :) :)
Thanks for a wonderfully informative video. At the end, you mention sticking the bits all together in another video. Still playing on making that one?
Yes I aim to do that soon!
Nice work! Thanks for sharing!
I was wondering, could I use parts of this video for a college short film for a class?
No problem. Sorry for taking 4 years to reply! I’m not that good with social media!
Amazing skills - magic!
How tall was the height of the teapot on the 2 pound clay?
They all vary slightly Raj. I would say 16 to 20cm. Hope that helps
Shouldn’t the spout be tapered so the liquid moves in one direction? Not perfectly cylindrical for if it is, your water, tea, Cream etc, will just come out in any direction around the spout.
The title could be an entirely different video haha. And yes, I know this is throwing.
Very nice, just a quick question, do you make your own throwing bats?
Yes. I use 9mm marine ply and cut the bats using a band saw.
this is teapot elan chickrn yes
I just wanna know who let him buy and wear those shorts?
Pottery sorcery!
Loved this video, what is the name of that tool you use to trim?
Hi Samara.
I'm just using a knife to trim the rim. I use an old credit card to create the internal gallery.

You ever get your stomach caught in the wheel?
This is clearly an expert at work! But....a handle would be nice!!!!
can you link me to the turning tool you used at 2:50 please?

No way that's 2 pounds! ...3 or 4 pounds i'de say.
I was thinking the same. I’m in a college ceramics class and we’ve been using 2lbs. That is definitely 3 1/2 or 4.
You look like a meme is he that guy all over the UA-cam
