Thank you! My husband ordered custom made dress shirts for weddings. He is a body builder. It was the first time he has ever had dress shirts to fit his huge neck, arms, and chest. To my disgust after paying $100/ shirt they look like maternity wear. I have sewn for 30 years but never altered a flat seam dress shirt. I have been terrified I will mess them up. Tracy Smith Thank you for your comment. Having worked with Bodybuilders in the past, it’s not always enough to take up the sides. You might need to dart the shirt. Please check out this video. It might be helpful as well.

Your expertise combined with your drive to to do things “right” even at the expense of some extra time is the approach I take when I fix anything around my house. As I am learning to do my own alterations, that quality aspect combined with your clear step by step actions are a very effective way to learn. Thank you.
A question I have is: why do you unpick the seams? The unpicked area gets cut off anyway. Once the shirt is pinned to the new desired outline, why not cut of just the flat felled seam. The two naked ends of fabric in this example would have about .75-1.00 inch of seam allowance left, enough to create a new flat felled seam? The reason for the unpicking escapes me?

When I have to figure something out on my own, I do what makes sense to me. I’m a visual person so that makes more sense than going by the numbers. If I don’t have to blend back into the original flat felled seam, I will just cut the seam off as you’ve suggested.

Hi! When you open the side seams of the shirt, do you also have to open the seam on the sleeves, too? I have a dress shirt that the seams are flat fell and the side seams need to be trimmed, but the sleeves are fine just the way they are. How would I be able to do that without disrupting the sleeves? I've watched several of your videos about tapering a flat felled shirt. Did I hear you mention that you have a serger that does flat felled seams? I couldn't wrap my head around how that would work. Is there a video on how to make this process more streamlined using a serger?
No, sergers don’t do flat felled seams. They finish seams. I don’t know which of the two videos you’re referring to, but if you have a shirt with a flat felled seam and you want to take your shirt in, but don’t want to do the flat felled seam, then you can open the seams, take in your shirt and then finish the edges with a serger then top stitch it to give it the flat felled look from the outside.

I heard you at 2:45 say to be careful not to pull the fabric apart since it would be a pain to put it back together. Recently though, i tried to alter a shirt.... and then the shirt accidentally came apart 😬
Fortunately it was only the body but now i cant seem to put it back together. What would be the best way to put it back together to alter it? Ive tried everything but i think im ready to give up :/
I would button the shirt and lay it flat. Smooth out the fabric. The side seams should align. Then pin where you want the new seam to be. I hope this helps.

When you trim the side seams of the shirt, do you also have to make the armhole smaller and trim the arm sleeves starting from the armhole?

Are you wanting to know how to do a Flat-felled seam from the body, up through the sleeve and to the cuff? Or just the sleeve?

Only because, I'm trying to learn how to do flat felled seams on both the sleeve and body, so I'd love to see how you would approach it, and what the workflow would look like.. This hasn't been something I've been able to find easily on UA-cam. There's a lot of videos around doing flat felled seam, but hard to find any with someone actually doing it down a sleeve (and body combined). Also, I don't know if this is too detailed.. but if you'd be open to sharing any thoughts on how / where you'd adjust the arm width, to allow for more room to make the flat felled seam through the arm, that would be a bonus :) thank you so much for your replies and help!!!
Doing the body and the sleeve at the same time is actually easier than just doing one or the other because you don’t have to blend back out to the existing flat-felled seam.
As far as making room in the sleeve for a flat-felled seam, are you taking a shirt with a serged seam and turning it into a flat-felled seam? Because generally, when you’re doing a sleeve alteration on the seam, it’s to take out fullness out and just putting the flat-felled seam back in. Sorry for all the questions, I want to make sure I answer all your questions in the video.

I'm actually not making alterations on an existing shirt - but trying to learn how to make my own shirt from scratch. I'm working off of a shirt pattern. I've been practicing for a bit, and have most of the shirt down.. this is just one area I'm still struggling with.
@@nickwetta4624 Perfect! If you lay your shirt out on your work table with the wrong sides together, pin the sides. Then, sewing from the right side of the fabric, sew 5/8” or whatever your pattern calls for. Then you trim the upper layer of the seam allowance then fold the bottom layer of the seam allowance over the trimmed layer, then lay it down on the shirt and pin. Do this from the hem of the shirt to the end of the sleeve.
I hope this makes sense since you watched the video. Let me know if this helps or if you need a video.
