Someone may say: "Well, this is the Chinese counterpart of the Japanese Katana", except that, very probably, the Katana originated from this ancient Chinese sword.
The only thing I want to say, in regards of this sword and a Katana, is that I like more the decorations (so pure aesthetics only) present in the various Katana Tsuba etc while this one is more "spartan". But nothing to say about this ferocious cutting power. Amazing sword :-)

There was this Chinese "Katana" that existed in the Han dynasty(that point of time , the name "Miao dao/Miao Sword" have yet to get it's name yet")
Japan did not even exist yet as a nation or an empire , let alone katanas.
fast forward later on in history(Han Dynasty collapsed hundreds/Thousands of years ago ),
Enter Tang Dynasty , the "Tang Dao/Tang Sword"(based on the design of the Han dynasty sword) was the
Original "Katana version 1.0" , it was an Era , where Japan existed as an Nation/Empire. The Japanese Emperor even complemented that the most beautiful sword is "Tang Dao", there were cultural exchanges between both China and Japan.
Thus this "Tang Dao" was shipped , copied and remodeled into the "Katana version 1.1" and from there, "Japanese Katanas" were born.

@@ricflair4052 No but I know what you mean. Without doubts a lot of Japanese weapons originated from Chinese ones. My point was that, the sword in this video, is IMO aesthetically speaking, way more 'spartan' than a Katana (less decorated etc). That's all :-)

Miao Dao is a 20th centaury sword so this being the originator of the katana is ZERO. Also the Chang Dao which was used during the Ming era is also a no go for the originator of the katana. Zhan Ma Dao from the Han era however is a very likely source for the early Tachi of Japan.

U are right, Miao Sword is not from Han dynasty , I got the name of the sword in Han Dynasty wrong.
However I am right on the fact there is a Sword that existed in Han dynasty and it continues to Tang Dynasty .
it was at this point , both China and Japan have exchanges, Katana didn't exist yet.
it was after Japan imported a lot of sword from China(tang dynasty) and modified it and from here, Katana is born.
and later in later part of history , In Ming dynasty a general modified Katana due to Japanese pirates pillaging china , and Miao sword was born to fight Japanese pirates.
see this link below for the history of Tang sword , Katana and Miao sword.

@@yuenhai you get more reach vs having your lead foot back...but you shouldn't be doing that unless you have a shield or some other blocking item in the other hand...or being very defensive or doing a passing cut. If you have your lead foot forward, you will get more reach. Passing cuts will give you astronomically more reach. As for power, unless you have a broken core or some other fundamental problems with your techniques, there is absolutely no way you get more power from making an attack on one foot vs a planted stance. However someone did explain to me why you would do that cut however. It's supposed to be against horse riders. You get a bit more vertical reach to maybe impale the charging horse rider better...but than the lack of balance would be an issue I would think. Not really a satisfactory answer...but not like I can actually test it either. I just know that if I had this weapon and faced a charging horseman, I would not be doing that.

A nice-looking video, but I would have enjoyed it more with way fewer cuts and speed changes. Clearly, about one minute of this video is really educational and matches the video title, the rest is the presentation of a form with many (video) cuts and speed changes (and without comparison between katana and miao dao). This editing makes it look very cool and flashy, but makes it more difficult to follow the details in the techniques, which is bad for education and also somewhat hides her skill (because with enough editing, everything looks good). That's why I suggested to cut down on the editing (pun intended).

Basically katana is a short nodachi. And Nodachi is a Japanese version of Miao Dao.

Chinese swords are good looking from outside, like their products, and can't take a blow from Japanese sword. Like Japanese electronics products have 1000time better lifetime than Chinese products

Metalurigical speaking: the Katana is a bad quality sword; that is why mostly fighers carried two swords.
The reason: the back of the blade was covered with clay before hardening; that gave a beautiful decoration.
But it gave also much material stress; so much, that it could break easily.
I once was chalenced to make a Katana in my workshop. I did; 8 hours all together. Hardness of the blade: 54 HrC,
I just used good quality steel, and made it a mlling and polishing job.
Allthough mine was very hard: I made a testpiece of the same material. Did not break.
