For a smooth gradient, i wouldn't use columns. You can actually specify a gradient in the decoration of a container. That would be more suitable

What is the difference putting inside children and not putting it ?

Nowadays it just already knows you are placing widgets inside the children so no need to explicitly tell it that you’re placing widgets in there. Doesn’t make much of a difference :)
