I enjoyed most of your video. I lived in Vicenza from 1973-75 and loved it. The city has a warm place in my heart and I would go back in a flash if I could. Re: Anti-American sentiments - most Vicentini like Americans on a personal level, and most are glad to have the US as an ally, but it is important to remember that, ally or not, it is still a foreign military base on their sovereign land. How pleased would you be to have an Italian airbase in Cincinnati?
Indeed sir. I know I am jumping a little late on this but as a vicentino after watching this video I wanted to point out exactly what you've said. Although I appreciated the video overall, it is a bit unfair to call "just a bunch of crazies" the people that have expressed concerns on the enlargement of the US military installations in Vicenza. The author of the video might not know that it was a sentiment shared by many more citizens than the usual "far leftists" and co.. Most of the fear was based on a factor mentioned in the video itself: Vicenza is a small city of approx 100k inhabitants, and placing there 1/5 (20K) extra population of foreign military people well, doesn't it seem quiete a lot? Not to mention the not so chrystal clear history of "drunkness and damaging" of soldiers there over the years (dont get me wrong im not saying that its an only american thing but put in perspective of a normal-sleepy italian countryside province where drunk fights are normally not implying big dudes that maybe were in Iraq just one week before..). Anyways the decisions of where and how to place new military bases into the italian soil are obviously taken way above people's awareness and way before they actually start to take place so people were kind of bummed by that reason as well, so they were enraged not towards our american allie but instead to our politicians muddy politics on the matter. Now a few years have passed and the equilibrium that was already there with the old base seems to have adjusted and hold to this new scale so don't worry, beside the bs we're friends with our fellows americans as we've always been.
You are very welcome. It is a great town with amazing people. we love it there and we have so many friends there. thanks for watching and commenting! glad you liked the video!
Spain, Portugal, Italy have similar eating times like Vicenza. Germany and the north and east are not as late and usually do not have the closed kitchen during the afternoon.
Army guy here, I liked Vicenza. I stayed on base when I visited. I spoke to a number of the citizens and they told me that the protesters were bussed in from farther south. It is only like 30 min to Venice and Verona. The architecture was cool without a doubt. The citizens were really nice people, especially compared to my staying in Berlin just before.
We are getting the biggest American military base in Europe, two steps away from a beautiful historical city like Vicenza, without anyone asking our opinion as citizens or caring about the environmental impact of the project. How would the Americans feel if 20,000 Italians decided to make a big ass base next to a quiet american town without the approval of the Americans??? Please you cant condone that.
Even if it was a ninja base, thats not the point. It should be decided by the locals if they want a big ass military base outside their doorsteps or not.
I was stationed in Vicenza from 2009-2011. Gotta agree with the convenience of travel to other amazing cities. Venice, Verona, Florence and Bologna are all pretty close, and Milan is only a little farther. Plus if you have a little more time, you can travel down the coast and visit a whole different country in San Marino, which is near a great beach in Rimini.
@OVOLOYGustavo I lived there in 2008 as well. Fun town if you know where to go :) i drank so many spritz and the bigoli with duck sauce was amazing! thanks for watching and commenting! i have some more vicenza videos on here too (top ten vicenza) and a few of my learn italian videos are from vicenza so you can get your vicenza fix :) thanks for watching and commenting!
I always end up coming by Rick Steves' or your videos on accident, so I just had to subscribe to you as well! Usually I'm just looking up Italian or Greek places I'd love to visit, but this time...I recently & randomly became interested in joining the Army. & Then I learned they had a base in Italy! A blessing from God because idk what else it could be! So I looked up the city & of course you had already done a video on it & even mentioned the Army base! I'm strangely grateful for you honestly. I really like your channel & your love (& experiential knowledge of! &) for other cultures, & your cute family!! :)
@LadyDior88 Yeah... I am still working on the video software... is it that obvious? ;) thanks for watching and commenting and pointing out my own stupidity :) Have a great one! Hope you will subscribe!
@Hypnagogia1 Thank you. I really love Vicenza. I have spent so much time there and love the people. Even the soccer team :) Thanks for watching and commenting and subscribing. have a great one!
I'm not saying they should not be annoyed. I more made this video for the families from the US that will be coming with the expanded airbase. Thanks for the comment and watching!
I was stationed in Vicenza in the 80’s with the 325 Airborne. Best duty station. Vicenza is awesome! I wonder if Del Folgheria and September’s is still there.
@tompaultompaul thanks tompaultompaul. I do appreciate it. Hope you have subscribed. If not please do and thank you for watching and commenting. Will be doing some more US based videos for the next six months (with a few different concepts, US vs UK, US Holidays, which probably is boring for you, but its funny hearing non-US ask what exactly we do on thanksgiving and if there really is turkey and pumpkin pie. Some fun comments usually ensue. Anyway, thank you for the kind words and see you!
why would they have a thanksgiving. thanksgiving in the u.s.a.is celebrating a big meal between the indians and the white man. later it was a super early day, to begin christmas the next day.
My wife and I will be visiting vicenza the whole month of July. My plan is to learn as much Italian as I can, be as respectful as I can be, enjoy the beauty and history of the region, and avoid talking about politics as much as possible.
About the hotels in the area and in Italy in general: a common thing is to stay at apartments and family B&Bs. We stayed in a small village next to Vicenza and it was the best experience ever! B&B Le Stanze di Rosy was the name of the place.
I know, but as i was trying to make this more for the tons of US people that will be heading Vicenza's way i thought i would give them the heads up so they are not all going to mcdonalds at 4pm :) thanks for watching and commenting!
There are fireworks at the American NATO base every July 4th. Vicenza is one of the few cities in Europe which actually celebrate US Independence Day. LOL. My dad had to buy a Opel to replace his Ford which got stuck, jammed, in a Vicenza street. The Alps aren't far away and can be seen from Vicenza.
Thanks for posting! My wife and I are being stationed there next year. This gave us some good insight as to where we'll be living for the next few years.
Bravo, I live in Washington D.C. but I'm from Vicenza. You covered almost evetything but didn't mention, unfortunately BAD FOR PARKING! During the nice weather go bike riding or get a scooter its easier for parking! A plus, if I may mention, is taking the Eurostar train and visit if you are stationed there (military folks) the rest of Europe......so worth it!!
Italian people against military base in Vicenza are not "just some crazy people". A LOT of citizens demonstrated since 2006 against US military bases in Vicenza. You know, it's difficult to talk about peace and environmentalism to americans, but the reality is that our wonderful city (World Heritage Site, the city of Palladium - the architect in which you have been inspired to build the White House) has been "devastated" by Americans. In my region (Veneto) there are 18 Us military bases and across the Country there are 113 Us military bases. We don't want to be accomplices of your fucking wars, we have enough of your bases which have a devastating environmental impact in our territories. We like americans who come here to contemplate how much infinite beauty has our Country, we love americans who come in peace. But we don't like uniforms, guns, bombs and all kind of things make you violent and ignorant people.
Jack webb Hi Jack. I was born and live in Vicenza. That's not true. Probably the 15th of August, but you'll always find the essential you need even that special day. Of course Vicenza is not New York, so if you're looking to go shopping and want to find fast food every corner, Vicenza is not the right city for you. We do not have metro. To walk the city center it takes maximum 25 minutes the longest way. For the rest, it is a stunning city. It is rich of art, history, architecture, food, wine, and the city is a feast for photographers. 10 times better than staying in the crowds of tourists in Venice or Verona. And cheaper. Enjoy Italy!
i be to differ the pasta everyday my mother inlaws has it everyday for lunch I lived there for over 3 years and I can tell you this they do eat pasta everyday
We love American people what we don t like is the Perennial American military presence ,makes as feel we still POW since WW2 , that s the only reason , but we welcome ordinary American citizen .
hey man, I am going Vicenza next week for a 10 days... So I have question about Vicenza.. Can you tell me what's the level of English of the people who lives in Vicenza?? Can they speak English ?? thanks..
In the veneto region there is a strong attachment of our heritage and dialect so people are not that keen of learning foreign language , Venice or Padova are more tourist friendly and language focused
I don't understand your hatred of American military. Also I am a regular American & I am married to a service member... So what makes me welcome & my husband not?
taffygirlgood is your fucking nation the problem if you didn't understand. Your nation, without a story...The United States of America...the only problem in this world!
We were just downtown and a lady hit my husband with her car which seemed on purpose even though we were on the sidewalk. She got out and proceeded to yell profanity in Italian to us as if it was our fault. I love Vicenza, I love the people, but people like that. Wow. Just wow.
ok I went to Mexico I had a couple of bad experiences with some of the Mexican people I was like wow just wow.....but do I let that bother me or blame all Mexicans or Mexico NO!!!! please don't tell me you haven't had any bad experiences in the U.S. ma please some of the most rude people in the world P.S. there are rude people all across the world in every country.
The airfield north of town is being turned into a NATO base, it will no longer be an airfield. You can see it under construction with Google Earth/Maps. The US military presence will double in size.
I really resent Vicenza. I lived in Padova 10 years ago as part of a work and language course, but then got sent to work in Villa Michelangelo which was totally out of the way of everything and my friends, I was isolated and alone and I just grew to hate this place. I'm sure if I visited again though and stayed more central it'll be better.
