    46:00 When you discuss something like this, you cannot just lump F1/FOM and the FIA together. The person who cuts the highlight reel for the cooldown room is almost definitely not employed or influenced by the FIA, but by F1 itself, who would have an interest in showing Max comment on it in the cooldown room. I'm surprised as well the scene wasn't in there, but insinuating its because the FIA tried to cover a controversial stewarding decision is quite the conspiracy theory I'd say.

      People have really been acting like they're one and the same lately (it was like that with coverage of the swearing controversy too). It's leading to constant accusations of hypocrisy and conspiracies just because people don't get that the FIA isn't FOM.

    My understanding was that Lando overtaking off-track was a cut-and-dry 5s penalty. Max was allowed to go as wide as he liked because he was ahead at the apex, even off track, and he just gets a track limits violation.
    I don't think that's how the rules SHOULD be - I think allowing the driver ahead to dive-bomb the apex then push the overtaking car off track makes overtaking even more difficult than it already is

  • @danielmetcalf
    @danielmetcalf 3 дні тому +30

    I'm a kiwi and stoked for Liam, but that isn't the same car Daniel was driving. Literally that many upgrades and changes that he got a 60 place grid penalty. Also, VCARB seem to have picked up their strategy game and stopped pitting their drivers 5 times a race.
    Love Liam, Yuki and Daniel, dislike VCARB (down with the 2 team ownership of RB)

    Honestly if Lando gives the place back I don't think he overtakes. I think he had been trying for like 8 to 10 laps? If he gave it back he would have had 4 laps, assuming he stays in DRS, which isn't a guarantee because letting another car past will give them a lot of time and cool your tyres and off balance the car for maybe a sector at which point Max is going to probably go full out and pull a second.

Perhaps making defending illegal as well now McKaren has the fastest car? Lando never breaked went offtrack (his 4th time should result in 5 seconds penalty and passing outside another 5) so the stewards where actually very nice to him will be laughing my socks of if in the review he get's that 5 seconds added and drop to 5th place...

They both did went past track limits but lando by not giving the place back is ultimately the one who benefited. Exactly! If drivers understand this rule it makes it virtually impossible to ever pass around the outside of a turn since the defending driver can gun it into the apex and drive off track, purposely forcing the other car off track and proceed to complain that he got overtaken off track. It's such a stupid rule.

    • @MrVsGarage
      @MrVsGarage  3 дні тому +4

      you are right and I realised it as I was editing. FOM handles the TV direction and probably that highlight reel as well, but I do think it strange that THE biggest moment of the race didn't make it in. Feels intentional to leave it out when any normal viewer would call that a highlight. It seems quite weird, but If the rules say who is first at the apex has the right to the corner, then so it is. However it really seems like they gave a 5 sec penalty instead of the new standard 10 because max was also of the track. The rules need some serious rewritting though, because they can be easily abused like Max showed a couple of times.

    • @thomasvrielink299
      @thomasvrielink299 3 дні тому +2

      It doesn't seem like that's why, as for some reason every penalty given this weekend was a 5 second penalty. Not that dishing out 10 second penalties instead has changed much, as the real issue is the penalties not being instant, but it's weird that they decided to deviate from the new standard this far into the season.

  • @andreasnygaard4834
    @andreasnygaard4834 3 дні тому +12

    I think it is relevant that Lando was decently ahead befor braking, and if max had braked in such a way he would have made the corner, lando would probably be along side or slightly ahead at the apex. So id argue the only reason max got ahead at the apex is that he broke too late to make the corner.

      Yup and he got a (first) warning for tracklimits because he didn’t make the corner.
      Still doesn’t allow lando to overtake outside the track. Also Lando got 5s penalty instead of the normal 10s. They took in account Max pushed him off.
      Don’t blame the smart driver using the rules as they are. If you don’t like it, make them change the rules. Now you are just fighting a lost argument just like McKaren.

    • @andreasnygaard4834
      @andreasnygaard4834 3 дні тому +3

      @@bjrnchrstn you make fair points, allthough abusing loopholes and grey areas, that are inherently hard to control,as the breaking telemetries implies he intended doing, isn't a smart driver in my mind as it is risking the integrity of the sport for personal gain. You could say it is being smart, but in my mind you are just a bad actor. Secondly "Mckaren" as the way you say it implies that other teams, including red bull wouldn't pull every possible argument, no matter how lost, to win on their cause.

      but what's relevant is the rules ? Max put his car in that position because that's the rules. if the rules stated otherwise Max would have done something else, all Lando had to do was not put his foot down and overtake off the track and he would have been fine, like Bottas and George situation. Lando is desperate and needs to calm down and get better at wheel to wheel if he wants to be WDC.

    The stewarding this weekend was so inconsistent it's crazy. Lap 1, Sainz sent it down the inside of Max same corner Norris v Max, both went off track in pretty much an identical way, Max kept P2. Is that also not gaining an advantage off the track for Max?
    Putting the inconsistencies aside this weekend, this whole thing that's been going on since Max did it big time in 2021 of throw it down the inside, defending or attacking, leave no room for the other car who is forced to go off track or crash, is just bad racing.
    It shouldn't come down to trying to define where an apex is or any silly stuff like that, if someone's front wheels are saying, halfway alongside the other car, they should be entitled to racing room, ie: an actual cars width.

  • @yolomolo2736
    @yolomolo2736 3 дні тому +17

    • @Selendeki
      @Selendeki 3 дні тому +9

      Since Lando elected to not cede the position the stewards netted him a 5 second penalty in lieu of what Max had done, instead of a 10 seconds penalty which recommended by the guidelines. If McLaren had been smart they should have ceded the position and argued for Max to get his 5 second penalty, which I think he definitely would have gotten. McLaren dropped the ball here, not Max, everything Max did was deliberate. Just listen to his radio afterwards, you can practically hear the smile on his face.

    I’m a big fan of both Norris and Verstappen. Bottom line, you cannot make a pass or complete a pass in a corner by going off the track. This is all my opinion from watching more than just F1 racing. The argument that Verstappen forced him off is a separate argument. Norris should have given the place back and if Max forced him off he would get a penalty for it and Lando would get another shot to pass him anyway, which I think he would have but we’ll never know. The other examples the overtaking car did the forcing, so it makes sense they would get a penalty for forcing off the driver being overtaken. Obviously none of those statements are black and white and just guidelines. Saw that penalty was coming for Norris🤷🏻‍♂️. Keep being you. Cheers.

This is a garbage call by the FIA and an unfair and illegal maneuver by max (no space left, which he also did to lando on sprint lap 1, so there is precedence for a decision or warning against max). They need to make decisions within 2-5 laps. if theyre nearer than 5 laps from the race end they need to inform the team immediately they are under review so they can voluntarily correct the issue, or accept the results at the end of the race. I have to respectfully disagree on the Norris penalty. Looking at other angles, Lando is almost a full 2 car-widths wider than Max when they are off the road. Lando realizes Max is leaving little to no room and pins the throttle off the apex to get a better exit outside the track. To me, at least, that signals his intent to overtake off track all the way back at the apex. I think if he had been right beside Max when they went off track and overtaken, then it would have been just a racing incident.

      I've just been looking back through it and actually Lando gets ahead under braking before turn in. I assume he thought he would be fully ahead and so takes enough speed for basically a normal racing line. However, we can see in telemetry that Max then comes off his brakes to roll into the corner with more speed and get ahead again for the apex which meant he couldn't make the exit.
      Norris turns out slightly to avoid and then decides to carry on with the speed he has, and I agree a penalty for pinning it off track is valid, but it looks like Max should ALSO get a +5 second penalty for forcing an overtaker off track after Norris was ahead under braking

    If your car goes off track, then you have no claim to "the lead". If you force another driver off the track, that's illegal.
    So neither Max nor Lando would be entitled to the position because they were both off the track. If you are the inside car, and the opponent is alongside you, and you go to the outside of the track (not even off the track), then you are forcing the opponent off and the opponent will have to swerve or break or completely back off. We can debate whether that is just racing or whether that's illegal. But if you, the inside car, go off track, and the opponent is alongside you also attempting to make the corner, then you've forced them off the track no question.
    He has no claim to the lead, and no claim that the move was right either. Norris got a penalty because Verstappen, to put it lightly, compromised his own exit. Despite Verstappen being in the way, Norris just drove around a crashing car and took the lead. That's not a penalty for Norris, I don't think, and I'd even argue Verstappen gets a penalty for that. Should have had a penalty for doing the exact same thing on the first lap, but first lap grace I guess is a thing. Others got a penalty for doing it, why not Max.
    The annoying part about it is the championship battle being decided yet again in the stewards room rather than on the track, Max yet again pulling dodgy moves rather than fighting fairly (which he is absolutely capable of doing and very skilled at, if he wasn't such a cock and actually tried to race normally), and Max yet again getting FIA bubble-wrapped. Lando absolutely needs to stop being a bottle-job, McLaren could have had a better managerial strategy hat on and made the best out of the situation, but we can't honestly watch that and say Max doesn't get a penalty for it and Lando does.
    I dunno. What do I know, not very much. I'd been enjoying watching Max not be a shoe-in for victory all the time, cos it looked like we might actually get to see his stellar driving ability in action. Nope, all that ever seems to happen is he comes under pressure so defaults to a dirty move. Thought he was a world champion?

      All Lando had to do was not put his foot down and overtake on the outside of the track ... its simple its his own fault he got the penalty, Max used the whole track and the rules in his favor... Lando was desperate to get ahead, as Max was just hitting the same lines each time and he had no idea how to get in front. so Max made him desperate to make a outside lunge with an overtake on the outside of the track. MAx outraced Lando once again and if lando wants to be WDC he needs to get better at wheel to wheel... Sainz was able to get past Max, why couldnt Lando ? in a better car ? its because he is cracking under pressure.
      Also do you not think a person using not only the full track in their disposal but the rules to the letter of the law ? Max is literally using everything possible to win this WDC, Lando has an insanely overpowered car while max has a 3rd place car and he is holding him back. Max is racing insanely well, and literally driving like a robot as he was under pressure from Lando able to hit the exact lines over and over again and held Lando back so much that Lando had to do an illegal overtake to get past. if you cannot see this then you don't know what you are looking at and don't understand racing.

      @@lightningv4210 I drive up to a corner, and lose control and go off the track, then spin, come to a standstill, etc. That's a crash. If someone's on my outside all the way through that corner, they're in harms way. They have to take avoiding action, or be a part of the crash. That avoiding action takes them off the track as well, forced to go the long way round because they are travelling in a forward direction and can't teleport. Sure they can "not put their foot down", your still in motion, but lets say it's possible and was caught at an early enough stage and the driver on my outside slows down to a stop, pivots direction and drives away on the track.
      They shouldn't have had to. I am the hazard. I have caused a hazard. Clearly indicated by the fact that I am no longer on the track AT ALL. They have had to take avoiding action. Whichever way they do it, whether it compromises their race or not, whether it involves them going off the track, is legal. Because all they are doing is driving around a crashing car. It is not an overtake.
      Then you have to factor in my actions. Because it doesn't happen quite like that. I don't actually end up crashed, or stopped, or spun at all. My trajectory was into a crash, took me well off the track, but because I'm a competent driver maybe, I don't actually bin it. At most, I'm a little slow on the exit, not an optimal racing line.
      Doesn't change anything for the other driver. They don't know I'm not just crashing. They are fully within their rights to drive past me, I welcome it.
      Except... I intended for it to play out like that. So I never meant to make the corner at all, I was never going to bin the car, I was going to go deep without a care in the world about whether the car on my outside was there. I intended to force the other driver to come to a stand-still while I drive off the track and drive away. I wasn't trying to make the corner, I might as well have just crashed into my opponent because it would have worked out better for my stated goal - they'd be out, and wouldn't still be driving to drive around me - but I didn't because I still wanted to be able to drive.
      So does that change anything? Am I still crashing out? Why not? Just because I'm not planning to, or because I didn't in the end, or what?
      Maybe, because I left the track entirely and had no intention of making the corner, as soon as I go off, that's me crashing out. And that my intention was drive wide and to hell with the other racer, that's a penalty for me. And whatever avoiding action the other driver had to take, even if that took them off the track, is perfectly fine because they were avoiding a crashing car.
      And don't get me wrong, I'm all for if it's in the rules take advantage of it - they're quick to apply letter of the law when it benefits them, so use it for yourself - no problem with that, it's a really good quality of Max's, and yes a big weakness of Norris'. But you'll have to tell me where in the rules I just drive entirely off the track and force my opponent off the track and hope they crash out or back off to a standstill and then I get to drive away, is. That's not using the "full track at their disposal..." off the track isn't at their disposal - it's not where the racing happens, it's where you go to crash and escape obstructions on the track.
      "He was driving insanely well ... held Lando back so much he had to do an illegal overtake to get past."
      What you should be saying is, "He was driving insanely well, until the no-consequences switch flicked, and he sensed his opportunity to kamikaze his rival off the track, and went so hard into the kamikaze that he himself drove off the track, and Lando, not wanting to be the meat on a Red Bull nose-cone kebab, swerved out of the way and drove on passed the crashing car and into the lead of the race. What a blunder from Max, how can a world champion be so braindead! I hope the FIA punish him for that reckless taint on an otherwise exceptional driving standard." That's what you should be saying, if you're at all rational.
      Maybe you're right, maybe I just don't understand racing. I don't understand how binning your car into your opponents is racing. Maybe at the dinky dodgems, or if we were counting the drivers championship with points for most confirmed kills. What do I know?

    I completely understand the criticism that can be attributed to what happened in the corner between Lando and Max, however I do not get at all anyone who says that Lando/McLaren should have given the place back and attempted another overtake. The chances of overtaking someone again in just 4 laps after giving them a place back are next to impossible. The amount of slowdown you need to make to let someone pass you is insane, and especially since this is Max we are talking about, he would have put in an instant 2 seconds if not more if Lando gave him the spot back. The decision the team had to make was either give the spot and finish 4th with no chance of getting to third, or continuing and hoping the stewards don't give a penalty. No sane team/driver would have given Max the place back in that situation and it is baffling that people think that would have been an understandable choice.
    Max's comments on the situation are also a showcase of me that Max is clearly not this quiet saint that never bullshits anyone and only focuses on driving. I'd argue the only reason Max is gonna win this year's championship is because of the frankly absurd amount of stuff he has done during races this year with the knowledge of how the FIA handles drama and events. He knows all the right ways to "cheat" while getting the best result. Some people call that "champion mentality", I call it a sad consequence of the modern FIA.

He knows with references what is condoned and what is not (e.g. he knew that Norris's overtake off the track behind on the apex with both going off is 100% penalized because he also got penalized for the same offense a few years ago). And Max just maximizes results.
      If you don't agree with the driving/rules you can blame FIA.

Sure, in the end both made a wrong move because both went off track, however, the punishments for that was a warning for Max (track limits) and a penalty for Norris (overtaking outside of track). If anything they were still rather lenient because what Norris did has been penalised with a 10 second penalty multiple times this season already (Magnussen), so they probably took the fighting into account. Besides, Max made that move knowing the rules and Norris should not have accelerated after missing being ahead in the apex.
