Clearly the judges are trying to set a scale. (at a reasonable level) But that first wave is basically a 10 so they really should have raised the bar for John. (8 points minimum)
@@vickryan I know what you mean. Put nicely: A scale should be *set*, not in each heat, but for a year, (not per each heat). Period. Overall people, stop listening to the commentators on this matter. The first wave should have been 8+. JJF, ducked into a tube (where everyone says come out and do a cut back and yet, JJF does an air and sticks it. VERY RARE in any hear this early). People were caught off-guard. Again, should have been 8+.
@@learning-and-dreaming the tube alone was really sick. I recall the commentators saying it was the best tube of the contest. (I will have to watch again to confirm that)
JJF is hands down the best surfer in the world right now . Style - Flow second to none Barrel abilities are insane The stall mod face to enter the barrel , not many can pull that
Hahahaha... I dont think so. Medina tops him at everything. Style is something personal and isnt included on the judging criteria. JJ and Medina got their own styles. Saying this or that style is prettier is like saying Sandra Bullock is ugly. Some will agree but some definitively won't.
2 things: 1. They brought in a new head judge last year with the goal of being more critical on scoring, and 2. It was the 1st heat of the day. The judges have always been reluctant to score high in beginning rounds.
There is no such thing as "claim claim". Brasil is a football country... when they finish a good wave, they "cheer cheer", like after scoring a goal. It might be weird for you... for us it's the norm. "is normal" anderson silva would say. It's not their fault everybody else is cold and heartless. Cheering won't get you additional points, though. And yeah, JJF is a beast.
@@jrleite The no claim claim is referring to when a surfer knows they did something good and difficult but stands up straight and acts like it was easy. That's all someone is referring to when they say a no claim, claim.
@@robotsfrom I got that part, thanks. FYI: I respect your opinion, but I see differently. Whenever you guys say "claim", you disregard cultural aspects in their behavior that may not be familiar to you (and to others tirelessly bitching about it) and I understand that you do, but brazilians celebrate every single thing (that we think) we "do well" (up for debate, cause we celebrate all things in life - whether it's well or poorly done, that's just the way we are). "Claim claim" is just a cheap way to rationalize a cultural behavior. Again: not everyone needs to be a stone cold killer while surfing. These kids went through A LOT to be there, I could try to explain to you, but it's something you guys might not understand, specially australians and north-americans cause you guys have dominated this comp for decades. Maybe you're numb to winning... maybe you're just too polite or too pretentious (like it was "all according to plan")... I DO NOT JUDGE what I do not understand! You do you... and let the kids "claim claim", they deserve that. Maybe you learn to cheer up a bit.
@@jrleite Nothing I'm referring to has anything to do with culture. It's just a name used to describe an action. Italo and Felipe have had some of the best no claim claims ever. Italo even did it in the final I believe on his last wave in the final. No claim claim just describes the act of standing tall and proud after a good wave. The way Italo does on his last wave in the final.
On the walled up streaker wave at 6:00, JJF should've done a long floater and then front side spin on the curl and down. Someone in the top pros needs to re-issue long floaters on their repertoire,…. mix it up,… easy on the hail mary airs.
To be fair Jordy has been doing it for a long time, and it seems that the upcoming kids like Herdy and Reef are eager to show that capacity to mix it up and be unpredictable
Something is wrong with the format. Taj Jordy and Julian should have been champs by now...and Shane Dorian. Who else?... Dane Reynolds.... Support these elite athletes!
Kinda difficult & crumbly beach break after the first/main peak. JJ definitely looking more on form, loose & explosive. Filipe either having an off day or his board not well suited to those conditions.
Look. There's 2 ways to score this heat. Using judges' scale they've set, or use my own scale. I will now assess this heat, one more time, based on the judges' scale. (Low scores) John 7.33 (first wave sets the scale for rest of heat) and then 6.0 (a little too generous but whatever.) Filipe earns 7.5 and 5.0 and that should be a 9.0 but the judges set the scale wrong to begin with, that's why it's a 7.5 only, for his perfect air. All in all John wins. Filipe needs a better backup wave, that's his real problem here.
My scoring is 7.33 and 6.0 for John. And Filipe 8.5 and 5.0 John wins is fair bc his first wave was nearly a 10 really. (Low scored at 7 points only) After i re-assess, i can give them each 8.5 and 6.0 so it's a tie.
It’s so satisfying to see John John read waves perfectly
first wave of J.J.F was amazing
how did he land that air
You need to watch their waves in slo mo to really appreciate how good they are!
JJF's scores are way low on the first two waves, but, the rides are excellent.

The best of the best! you know it’s good when you get mini anxiety before each run
What's up with the announcers downplaying John John? The underscoring of his waves? Another scripted year?
2 things: 1. They brought in a new head judge last year with the goal of being more critical on scoring, and 2. It was the 1st heat of the day. The judges have always been reluctant to score high in beginning rounds.

@WHKFTP Why do you say that?
@WHKFTP That's what I figured.
5 seconds In John Johns still got it - complete with no claim claim
