Usually if you're concern about using combos for weapons, press three different arrows on the D-pad and always followed by machine gun, in odd combination, and you'll shoot out a comboed attack. It's pretty easy. That's how I figured out without a guide.

I'm happy I bought the strategy guide for this game back in the winter of 1999 those strategy guides are hard to find now.
