Mike. I was waiting on your review of this plug in before I downloaded it . I didn't hear any harshness while you were sweeping through the different bands. This sounds really musical on the mix bus and gives you plenty of options to find the sound you are looking for.
This plugin completely impressed me. It sounds so transparent as no other EQ I know of. It had mixed response on gearslutz and I'm glad you did this presentation which shows how good it actually sounds. Even the MS shift sounds awesome. Not artificial at all. Would you say it's somehow close to the hardware? Cheers
I’ve been waiting for you to review the Brainworx SSL 9000; I would love to hear your in depth perspective. Thank you for the Amek review though and thank you for your outstanding reviews.
Thank you for your reply. I can kind of tell your timing now. When you’re busy in the studio or the production school, you’ll disappear from UA-cam for a bit; and when you finally get some breathing room, you’ll grace us with your in depth analysis. Which begs the question... Do you ever take a break? Hope you do and thank you for your videos.
its getting difficult to chose what to use at this point. between the Curve Bender, The Bettermaker & the Amek, do you have a personal favorite that you find yourself reaching for more often?
@@TP-ev8xp yes, I have all of the above mentioned, and they're all great in their own ways. but right now I find the silky highs of the Bettermaker hard to beat
So this is a software transparent EQ that sounds very nice. The difference between this and something like Pro-Q3 which is another transparent software EQ that also sounds very nice and is more flexible, is? Just asking why one would chose "x" transparent software EQ, over "y" transparent software EQ.
It's basically for two reasons afaik: You can come up with very complex curves, you wouldn't as easily and intuitively get to with something like Fabfilter and second, because of the curves and the q's in these emulations that generate the "particular" sound of the original. Otherwise it's really hard to distinguish between the same curves on different transparent eq's. With tube stuff, it's different, but there's no real reason to get plugins like that except for said conveniences and workflow "enhancements".
@@mixingwithmike I would argue, that it is nearly impossible to distinguish between Fabfilter and Equilibrium in a blind test with the exact same curves applied. Granted, there is a difference how these algorithms sum and work with the frequency of the curve, but if you are able to tell, you have great monitoring, good ears and you are listening carefully. While I would agree with the usage of different analogue emulations in the context of quality variety, especially when it comes to the emulation of the distortion character, I wouldn't say that a session mixed with the exact same curves on fab and dmg, will sound noticeably different to anyone. With analogue emulations, the effect adds up to a different overall sound, because distortion is still very hard to emulate perfectly and therefore, you'll hear a distinct difference, when mixing complete sessions with waves ssl eq or brainworx for example. The only reason to choose one hq digital transparent eq over another, in my conclusion, would be the feature set of the software: available curves, filters, workflow or visuals as there is nearly no noticeable difference in the end product, even when mixing a whole session. Oh and one more thing: I learned a lot from you, when I was starting out and I appreciate your contribution to the community. Thank you.
Manley is a bit quirky with the band interaction, takes a bit of getting used to. The SPL is also very clear but doesn't seem to have the same surgical precision of the 200. I am not familiar enough with Elysia to comment.
Manley too small to read, it' sonly 2 inches wide, and cant be adjusted in size..ity' sleek from 2005. Forget it or get glasses. Dont matter how good it sounds.
Great presentation, Mike! Have you tried IK Multimedia's Sontec? If so, how do you think it compares, other than the additional features on the PA plugin, or to the UAD MDWEQ5?
2 great references! I actually like the Sontec emulation by IK, but the hardware itself is a bit limited for regular use. Not quite as clear and open as the 200. I LOVE the MDWEQ5 which was the closest thing I'd heard to the GML 8200 until this. Doesn't hurt that George Massenburg created it!
I just found out the super expensive BX Amek 200 is digitally cramping at Nyquist with bell curves at 44,1. I compared it with SPL passive EQ and that one doesn’t. I’m really bummed out I payed 399 plus taxes for it😞
Came here from GEarslutz where hobby producers and unemployed DJ's and Cubas guys with UAD interfaces from 2005 keep mentioning Softube Weiss etc..Sure Softube, the company that brought us crap like Console 1, bad SSL emulations etc with an iLOK key from 2009 lol lol... They are a hobby company....Or Equilibrium, the FabFilter knock off...suuure, these cheapos will compete with the Amek? No way...They whined like crazy....I didn't even correct them. In the meantime, pros work. This is a solid plugin. Maybe Gearlsutz people are older, where the ear only goes to 14khz (after age 40), at age 50 all they can hear is 12K and they cry loll lol lol!!! this is why.. People from Gearslutz been their since 2004, and never left that forum..hangin on two the old ways....haha...
Oh man, it is so totally UNFAIR to demo this eq with a song that sounds so incredibly STELLAR!!!! Ummm Hmmmmm!!! Will all my songs sound this amazing just by adding this plugin? 😄
Unfortunately I was very dissapointed by the AMEK. Here's why: * Even with all the eq bands shut off it reduces the extreme highs per default. * It is not possible to boost a frequency above 20 kHz and let the slope of the filter fade in the audible range. The peak of the filter is always under 18 kHz or so. * The Eq frequencies are not precise. When boosting 20 kHz with the blue High Eq, then about 17 kHz gets boosted, when boosting 20 kHz with the yellow High Eq, then about 16 kHz gets boosted. * It is very CPU-hungry. * I couldn’t found out how to use it in mono-mode (and save CPU). * It’s not possible to use the EQ-section or the BX-Module only (and save CPU), they work only in conjunction. * The high pass filter sets in too early. Already in the lowest position (20Hz), the lower note of a 5-string bass (30.87 Hz) gets reduced by round 0.8dB. Not suitable for Jazz. * I couldn’t perceive the effect of the TMT section. I spent lots of time on A-B listening with monitors and especially with headphones with no success. In case something’s wrong with my ears, I did a test, setting identical signals left and right and turning TMT on/off and from 01-02 to 19-20 but even my goniometer stood absolutely still. * The amount of “mono-making” in the BX-Module is not adjustable. My DAWs onboard stereo-imager is able to monoraulize for example by 5% or 25% or up to 50%. * Some minor issues in my opinion are that the knobs should have at least a slight “tendency” to stick at the 0 position in order to avoid the ctrl-shortcut (or let a double-click set it back to 0) and the contrast of the GUI should be a bit higher (the letters “whiter”).
Tried this thing today. I was unable to make it sound bad. It almost doesn’t matter what you do on it. It’s distractingly good.
Like that eq I'm using it sometimes, but it has a weird harshness to it if you push it to far
When you played with the Hi Band in M/S I was like, instantly in love. Thank you for this.
Just bought, definitely well worth $24
