I believe that the university was gifted that land in order to locate a university on it. Not as an asset to be sold off for profit to build houses on. If they don't want the land any more, then surely it should be given back to the people, where a wildlife refuge could be established, for example. Clearly, building a lot of houses there will be destructive to a beautiful area with lots of wildlife. No wonder the proposals are so unpopular! There are 3 astronomical observatories on the edge of that area, including mine, that will be rendered useless by the additional light pollution. I think the university has always struck a very good balance between their needs and the local environment, blending in with the surroundings while providing access to open land and views over the city of Canterbury. I have always liked the campus and the way it is laid out. This is very out of character and clearly a big mistake.
K... but the map of the proposed development area you put up doesn't appear to interfere with Blean Woods so I'm a little confused as to what the issue is. Housing has to go somewhere and it seems equitable that if the residents of South Canterbury have to put up with the development around Thanington and Nackington then those of Blean and Tyler Hill should bear some of the brunt too. It would also help the university out of the hole that the govt's stupid approach to funding has landed it in.
Good luck
