There was nothing wrong with the "Indians" name. My guess is that there were many real-life Indians who were opposed to changing the name to something else. I would think that many were proud to have a MLB Team named after them! It gave them recognition, and to me since i was young, it's always been Positive recognition. American Indians are a huge part of our history...and our present. I actually think this change is BAD for them. To me, this is actually taking recognition away from them.

Jim Thorpe played for a team that called themselves the Indians. It was a point of pride. Indian is a signifier for a group of people, like Yankee or Canuck. Any word can have negative meaning if you assign one to it.

Lmao. This reporter is woke herself. Guarantee you she only used the ones that liked the guardians when she said “most people I talked to”. What a joke.
This is what happens when you put people in a front office that are from other industries. The Indian's head of marketing does not have a baseball or even a sports background. It's all about the money in MLB which is ruining the sport. The name change sucks and if they really felt a need to change the name, there were so many better choices. Wouldn't care if they moved the team now.
FUN FACT: After helping Pedro Cerrano and the Cleveland Indians win the pennant, Jobu went on to become the Mayor of Chicago under the alias 'Lori Lightfoot'
When the Cleveland Naps changed their name to the Indians in 1915, the franchise reportedly did so to honor Sockalexis.[11] The Indians' official media guide says that the owners solicited sportswriters to ask fans for their favorite nickname, and the name Indians was chosen by a young girl who wrote to one of the sportswriters whose column requested suggestions. She specifically mentioned Sockalexis and his heritage. The attribution of the new name as being in honor of Sockalexis, a member of the Penobscot Tribe of Maine, is generally discredited given the discriminatory treatment of Native Americans in general, and Sockalexis in particular during that era.[12] The news stories published to announce the selection in 1915 make no mention of Sockalexis.
I was on a plane and had an interesting conversation with a native American man. He gave me his card and on it it said "Crow Indian Tribal Council". Yes, it was a messy divorce and the estranged Cleveland Franchise can go to hell.
Atlanta Braves always have welcomed outsiders....
Don't be a cock, as much as the name guardians blows its still cleveland baseball. They can't take the tribe away in our hearts.
Me too. All sports has caved in to the Marxist woke agenda.
Long live the chief!!!!
Like others have said, you gotta love how the "news" reporters selectively chose to put on TV the ones who promoted their agenda.
1:41 "I think it's disrespectful to Indians"
You do realize that the team was named after an Indian player who was so popular they renamed an entire franchise after him?
Except Louis Sockalexis was opposed to it as people would come to the games in feathers and warpaint which is pretty offensive to wear if your a white person. And later the team started using a mascot that literally played into every racist stereotype of Native's.

I'm half-native and I loved the Indians and logo. Activists had a problem with the logo, but I loved it. I will be rooting for the Braves ... until the wokesters ruin that too.
@Lighthouse in the Storm Indians , Braves , Golden state Warriors were to honor the indigenous, and not to mock them. Woke mob are the stupidest and most dangerous people in America
People are so sensitive it’s embarrassing for the human race
Will never go to another game.
Who cares
Chief Wahoo was a classic logo
It’s a bad omen
Those who wanted to change the name I bet don't know baseball or history
Plus Cleveland Spiders would have been a better name change
Cleveland Crab Lice?
Cause they want me to watch the braves. Oh wait now that I live in Atlanta....f
It will always be the Cleveland Indians … do t care what ppl want or say
Great, now show the majority of people you recorded that hated the name change and most likely commented on how poorly designed and executed the new logo and jerseys were done.
You aren’t native are you? It doesn’t seem like it. Your people weren’t mass killed by people who came and stole land from natives. Our land was stolen and our people killed and yet people think it’s ok to mock our culture. We aren’t characters. It’s unacceptable.
@Ojibway Kay hmmmm, don’t know if you’re a bot or not (You’ve repeated the same statement, like a bot), but the name “Indians” was meant to honor them.

You'll still be allowed to wear it, but probably not to the stadium.

Nice! They cant stop you from going to a home game. Thats " racist"
Maybe the Somali Pirates find Pittsburg's name offensive? Have they been consulted
Well they didn’t ask me. And I think it’s total BS!
Sound like a little kid named it and made the logo.
“Natives” was way better. Guardians is very comic book sounding.
Indians are the best sounding.
Cleveland Indians . Not Gaurdians.
Guardians of Wokeness
Bro that fits so well
All white woman who are fighting for it…. LONG LIVE THE CHEIF
To me, this is actually taking recognition away from them.
thats because you are ignorant, they are human beings not a mascot
Good then they should take all their casino money and buy the team and change the name.
The Cleveland Guardians? What exactly are they guarding? They have not won any World Series titles.
Why not THE CLEVELAND STEAMERS? Flows with the tongue, has a nice ring to it…catchy!! The merch will most definitely make for some great conversation pieces. Plus their fans will have a legitimate excuse for a poor season.
Most people don't know what a Cleveland Steamer really is. I do, and it's pretty gross🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢
Go Woke - Go Broke
As a full blooded Guardian myself, I find this name extremely offensive and want it changed. I’ll be protesting on Twitter accordingly.
The irony is when they tweeted out the news, they didn't bother changing their Twitter name... Just goes to show how short-sighted people are becoming...
@@cratedog64 oh the irony from you

People are mentally ill these days. It's quite common and very sad.
Don’t do it, tell woke culture to go away. The most insulting side of this time is following requests from those who are embarrassed about American values. Try to go to another country and change there values. I truly am disappointed in MLB, and the Americans who support such nonsense.
Please explain how a cartoonish image and a team’s name that has nothing to do with the sport played is “American values”?
If there were many natives on the team when they first entered the league or a native owner please inform all us ignorant baseball fans.
@@nibsvkh hes a racist idiot
Jim Thorpe played for a team that called themselves the Indians. It was a point of pride. Indian is a signifier for a group of people, like Yankee or Canuck. Any word can have negative meaning if you assign one to it.
Cleveland Guardians! I guess we can call them the "Guards!" That will sound perfectly underwhelming and 9 out of 10 Native Americans are pissed.
I am a Guardian and the new name offends me. Please change it,,,
This is the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. Having Indians as a name not only is cool. But if anything it’s paying respect to the native Americans by naming a team after them
If they wanted to change name it the Natives
I think with the Cleveland Naps they were on the right track, lol.
Till i leave this earth they will be the Indians. TRIBE for life!!🇨🇦
RENAME THIS WHAT IT SHOULD BE RE-NAMED: THE DISCOUNT DOLANS!
I was on a plane and had an interesting conversation with a native American man. He gave me his card and on it it said "Crow Indian Tribal Council". So if it is not offensive to them how is it offensive? Maybe the logo is offensive but not the name. As long as cowards keep giving into trouble makers they won't stop until every statue is torn down. These fans could have stopped this in the bud by staying home from the game. Money talks.
Let’s go Tribe!!!!
RIP native Americans, rather than draw attention to your plight. your history and future, we're just going to delete you because of a bridge. Go Cleveland!
The name also drew attention to their bravery, courage, and athleticism.
Time to boycott Cleveland's team. If they've been using a racist name for over a century, as they now admit, then simply saying they won't do it any more isn't good enough. They have condemned themselves.
They were named as to tribute first Indian member of the team.
RIP to the Indians. The baseball team That was.
So much for diversity. Now you can only have a team nickname if it has to do with whites.
When you think about it, that’s even more racist.
The Tribe would've worked too.

Why can't a heritage be honored by the name of a professional sports team? It seems to be that would be a great way to show honor
