Most sociologists look to understand society as a way to analyse and improve society. This is the same attitude held by many on the political left, so naturally the two go hand in hand. Obviously, there are schools of thought within sociology that look to understand society but not as a way to apply social reform, which might suit fellow sociologists who are more aligned to the political right. I think the ideas of Weber or Marx are just more popular than those of Spencer and Social Darwinism.

With sociology degree, I think you can either go to grad school if you're lucky and then be a professor to teach other students to be a barista at Starbucks or to be a professor that teaches students to be a barista at Starbucks and the cycle continues.

I am not seeking to change anything. You are blatantly mischaracterizing the discipline.

Stevo-Fernando Discipline ha you make sociology sound almost academic. Unfortunately I've had to experience multiple sociological modules and have found them to be nothing more than far-left propaganda.
We were never told how to think by analysing two opposing arguments and deciding with which we agreed. Instead we were told what to think and if we disagreed, you're branded a racist, sexist, xenophobe, Nazi etc. It was more about conformity rather than diversity of thought.
Sociology is the second most useless subject, with the first being women/gender studies.

JohnC If you are being genuine, then your experience does in fact sound terrible, and I apologize for calling you a moron. However, don't you think that it is a little rash to judge the entire subject based on your experience with a bad falculty? For example, it's pretty shocking that you weren't presented with opposing viewpoints, especially since there's plenty of disagreement in the literature. There are bad professors in every subject.
