  • Vinyl LP (Sony PS-X75) - The Beatles - Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds (US Mono)
    Turntable: Sony PS-X75 Biotracer
    Cartridge: Dynavector 10x5
Phono Stage Preamp: Pro-Ject Tube Box II
    Stereo Amp: Marantz 2235b
Notes: The greatest turntable ever built by human hands, Sony's PS-X75 Biotracer. The table is a battletank, massive size, immense power, and amazing technology. Powering the PS-X75 is the Dynavector 10x5, the Pro-Ject Tube Box II (with a pair of Mullard tubes), and the Marantz 2235b stereo receiver. This was the best stereo system I ever owned. The music was miraculous, wonderful, and so thrillingly ALIVE.
We all know The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, but few have heard the original MONO mix. This album is the US Capitol Records release, which suffers from extreme high-end roll off, because the company's bosses thought they knew better. This results in a thicker, heavier sound, which still sounds great on the Sony Biotracer. Notice how this MONO mix differs from the stereo version, especially in the flange effects on the chorus.
A UK Mono Sgt. Pepper is one of the holy grails of LP record collectors. Expect to pay a premium price if you ever find one. I'm still amazed that I scored the US version for only $25! It was such a rush to discover this album - my heart was racing with excitement. Music should always do that, kids. When it stops being exciting, something is terribly wrong. Thus endeth the lesson.

How did you record from your PS-X75? I have a PS-X700 I would like to record from.

Max Roberts I connect a cable from the headphone jack on the Marantz stereo receiver to the desktop PC. I record the audio with Audacity. The turntable is connected to the phono preamp, which is then connected to the stereo receiver for amplification. Many of these recordings were made for "needle drop" CDs, which allow me to listen to my records while at work. Hope that helps!
