he didn't just get sent these cards early by mistake if that was all that happened we wouldn't have even known about it. what he did was choose to post the cards on his youtube channel knowing exactly what they were and what he was doing. he knew they hadn't been revealed to the pubic yet and he chose to leak them. this didn't warrant or excuse wotc sending the pinkertons but the guy wasn't some innocent bystander wotc just blindsided because he got the wrong stuff in the mail. we don't need to lie and make excuses for genuinely bad behavior on the part of a content creator to make wotc look bad, we can acknowledge that the guy also shouldn't have leaked the cards and that doing so does in fact warrant some kind of a reasonable response from wotc.

you have to get the specil foil of ob nixilis or like 3 nissa's or calixs guided by fate those are the money card it has 19 cards that are 10+ and 5 of the 19 are calix 4 are nissa so over the problem was they screwed up cause they took a 50 card set and turn it into 230 with each card getting like 3-5 art treatments that not counting the some of the cards twice for foil treatment i read it was 390 something when you take that in to things they over didnt it if they did like 2 alt arts with foil non foil then it might have better turnnig 50 cards in to over 300 is just dumb then you had the chance to pull 3 of the same card cause hey normal alt art and foil
If they're lowering the price of the box (without it being a clearout or smth like that) there is no way they're keeping the value of the cards inside the same unfortunately.
Given how fast Wizards is putting out Magic sets nowadays, i feel like those 6 mystery boxes from "the boomer times" of Magic could be from Theros and you wouldn't be wrong.
I remember watching the Epilogue on Epilogues thing they had on the twitch stream and couldn't help but think "These guys are not telling us why they missed the mark; they're telling us why WE, the consumer, are wrong." It felt really bad to continue to watch it, especially since they were SO SURE it would work out that they made a second sheet for Outlaws.
WotC's marketing has a lot in common with communist propaganda. They are constantly lying through their teeth despite knowing that we know that they're doing it. I personally wouldn't even mind the occasional bad product. Some people will still buy it, because they find something in it for themselves. I do mind this type of dishonest PR stunt.
You know I think the problem with MkM isn’t that it was a bad set, but people won’t pay premier prices for a regular set. Also Sheoldred being in standard makes most of these cards unable to compete so they just get shoved in a bulk box
Gonna be honest, when we were mid spoiler season for MKM I realized that I didn't like the set at all, I haven't even drafted it in Arena (but I did craft some of the duals)

On the other hand, and admiting that it's still too early at this point to really tell, I think that Bloomburrow will be the other way around for me; I fell in love with [Mabel, Heir to Cragflame] to the point that I'll make a (probably) pretty bad, low budget red/white goodstuff commander deck; Heck, I won't ever care about equipment/tron cards or mice (since the good equipments are expensive and mice are not really that good at the moment), I just want to kill people with a cute little mouse, with a cute little name, using her cute little sword with a trully epic name.
Honestly I really like Murders. I read the story and it was great. But it's premium price and I'm not sure how good the play boosters are as a draft exprience. I could save a ton of money by making a murders cube and be happy getting the flavor, getting a balanced draft environment and save so much money. I could probably make one for $40
Format idea from a non magic player: "Dollar store magic" its regular magic (aka 60 cards, 4 copies of each) but you are limited to cards whose cheapest mint printing is less than 10 cents, if you want a card banned just buy like 100 of them and make it go from 8 to 11 cents and boom banned
@tomasavendanozacarias5205 assassin's creed two player starter with a gift bundle (or regular/prerelease if out of season) can be fun. I'm only doing sealed product given they don't test cards anyway and sell/put aside the overpowered ones. Also set up a type of commander (60 cards singleton) with 1 land per commander's color (opponent can use multiples if the identity isn't equal, and only 1 summon of that leader given the 20 life) and that speeds up the game while not having a wrong color mana flood, which is unplayable to draw all your islands when you got black cards. I saw oathbreaker on the site but I feel a planeswalker and instant aren't really needed in every deck. Some also only open up packs for a deck and play no lands lol pretty wild.
I really like Karlov Manor and Ixalan as sets. And I’m glad prices on singles aren’t obscene. Just wish the retail price would follow suit. 90-100 should be the max on any box in standard for sure.
I started playing Magic the Gathering in 2014 when Khans of Tarkir released. I remember finding your channel and loving all the thoughtful reviews and content you were putting out. After 2017 I took a little bit of a hiatus from playing and buying cards but luckily I kept most of my cards and decks. Now that it’s 2024 and my spark to play Magic has returned, I’m thrilled to see how big your channel has grown and how you’re still a major part of this community. Just wanted to say thanks Prof! ❤
I picked up a streets of Capenna set booster box for 70€ last week. Can’t get better than that for the sake of fun at the moment. Brothers war is at a similar price range.

The absolute rollercoaster you just took me on lol. For just one minute I forgot, heard 40 dollar booster box and thought maybe I'd pick up a good amount of trash for a good price since I only own a few real cards. Then I watched a bit and remembered that they didn't put cards in aftermath boosters.
I mean, I remember that it started exactly because he wanted to show off how stupid purchasing a box for its financial value was, so this series specifically hasn't changed.
As someone who opened and sold 6 boxes of epilogue booster at launch, the only reason I made over half my money back, was because I got 4 nissa's, and sold when they were at peak. I got stuck holding the bag with command masters, and have never boughten a box since.
Yeah, it's probably not wise to buy into MTG Sets, when Hasbro is still trying to offset their boardgame blunder from the big stayin-at-home. Just remind yourself that crackin packs isn't an investment, it's gambling.
Even sealed boxes don't net you what you'd think. I've got a sealed box of Time Spiral Remastered, which is a few years old now, and still sells for $200

You can buy the complete set for 75 bucks or less including taxes and shipping... one of each base card (no special treatments). I just did this recently to complete the set.
Glossed over a Slime Against Humanity in the common slot at least once, I think they're worth like $2.50+. Doesn't change much, but just noting it's a decent pull from Karlov packs atm.
The total amount from the second box opening was being GENEROUS too because at 20:38 the forensic gadgeteer was added for $12.19 to the total at the bottom. Box total should be $60.40/ $110
I stopped buying anything from WoTC, my playgroup and I just used proxies for anything above a dollar, we get cheap singles from our local shop. Best decision we ever made as a group.
We do the same! Ever since collector boosters came out our play group stopped with buying packs. We have been enjoying it ever since but watching everything burn has made us sad lol. But at least the wallet isn't crying over buying cardboard

GOAT format has been a lot of fun for me and my friends who used to play with the old sets growing up, it's like legacy but the decks are 40$ not 4000$ lmfao. Great card game..
The point of the booster box game has never been to win - in fact, it's basically the opposite. The whole point is to forcibly illustrate how hard it is to actually make your money back from cracking packs and thus make us get it through our heads that it's a bad way to acquire cards.
Well, the concept itself is kinda flawed. If it's only 2< $ cards, and winning it was expected, then all the boxes would go to the moon in price since people would do just that, buy box, crack, sell with profit, buy another, crack, etc. But as a player, it's not like those cards are free, even if not too expensive. If you count those cards, then the close results like LCI here would propably push bast the line.

Shouldn't we be able to figure this all out mathematically given the prices for each card and probability of that card being in a box? You should team up with Matt Parker (Stand Up Maths) and make this the "*Insert Set Here* Booster Box Math Game".

I can absolutely relate. Luckily, my FOMO finally gave way to "nah, I'm not paying for this many badly made products I'm not really interested" when Dominaria United came out. And with that, I stopped collecting sets after 14 years. Sad but now I focus on the occasional set that I actually care about.

looks like from pack 20-21 it randomly drops and the jump up is a reset to what it should have been. Either way MKM is pretty terrible to buy right now.

I found 2 slimes and 2 crime novelists in the Bundle, then got 2 more foil slimes free in a whatnot purchase, and found another crime novelist in a spur of the moment walmart buy
I’m no magic guru like the professor so excuse my ignorance but why is it that the majority of cards of value are land cards? Like I get it people need lands and have to buy them for their decks but shouldn’t the chase card be that special powerful creature or something? I feel like it used to be. But my point is why doesn’t wotc print more lands? Like every deck needs those duals except mono decks so if they want the game to be more affordable print a box of dual lands and call it something clever
Only is these retailed for $50 like jumpstart would the product been less of a flop….the cheapest mtg product other than a commander deck at $40 is a booster box at $140…..unaffordable for most is the entry is that high. Most ppl aren’t enfranchised enough to care about the singles market and some just wanna go to the store or lgs and buy product. That has gone out the window with the absurd prices and confusion behind too many products and types of boosters. Other card games do not have this issue!

LGSs (and stores in general) in Germany will sit on old product with ridiculous prices for YEARS and lose 100% instead of liquidating and taking the short term loss.
Pack 21 of 36 @20:07 $25.52 but after pack 22/36 @20:42 it is $37.71 for a $2.89 card? I think something is wonky? Also at @38:11 the price drops from 90 something dollars to 80 something dollars after the final pack?
We got those weird Double Feature meets Epilogue boosters for Lord of the Rings (I genuinely can't remember what they're called, Holiday Edition or Jumpstart Volume 2) where they added a couple of new cards and did a lazy new showcase style by using the existing artwork in an odd scroll border. Strangely, I think that did alright? Probably because the set was pushed pretty hard for modern so there might have been alot more perceived value.
I participated in a Chaos Draft where one player opened three aftermath boosters as a replacement for a pack. Three Cosmic Rebirths ended up wheeling lmao
This has pretty much been exactly my experience in the last 6 or so sets. Used to, every once in a while, open a box that was worth it. Seem fortunate to get 1/2 your moneys worth now..... and the crappy play boosters are now more than set boosters were...

I stopped buying anything from WoTC, my playgroup and I just used proxies for anything above a dollar, we get cheap singles from our local shop. Best decision we ever made as a group.
We do the same! Ever since collector boosters came out our play group stopped with buying packs. We have been enjoying it ever since but watching everything burn has made us sad lol. But at least the wallet isn't crying over buying cardboard
Thank you for adding the music. Note that even with the $30 hit on the Carnival of Souls that box still failed to hit the mark. Based on the case of six boxes I opened of Commander masters, I say with confidence that the whole case of six boxes would only have 1 carnival of souls.

GOAT format has been a lot of fun for me and my friends who used to play with the old sets growing up, it's like legacy but the decks are 40$ not 4000$ lmfao. Great card game..

The point of the booster box game has never been to win - in fact, it's basically the opposite. The whole point is to forcibly illustrate how hard it is to actually make your money back from cracking packs and thus make us get it through our heads that it's a bad way to acquire cards.
He did make money on the MKM Collector booster box he did last week, but he wasn’t playing the game because he didn’t expect to get his money back.
Well, the concept itself is kinda flawed.
If it's only 2< $ cards, and winning it was expected, then all the boxes would go to the moon in price since people would do just that, buy box, crack, sell with profit, buy another, crack, etc.
But as a player, it's not like those cards are free, even if not too expensive.
If you count those cards, then the close results like LCI here would propably push bast the line.

Shouldn't we be able to figure this all out mathematically given the prices for each card and probability of that card being in a box? You should team up with Matt Parker (Stand Up Maths) and make this the "*Insert Set Here* Booster Box Math Game".

Oh, no, way more than that. Wizards wanted them to sell for like $180 per box, if not more. Many (if not most) stores would still be losing money selling them for $140 based on distributor price, let alone their other expenses.
I always suffer from FOMO, however, I have been able to control the urges for the last two magic sets and my wallet thanks me.
I can absolutely relate. Luckily, my FOMO finally gave way to "nah, I'm not paying for this many badly made products I'm not really interested" when Dominaria United came out. And with that, I stopped collecting sets after 14 years. Sad but now I focus on the occasional set that I actually care about.

On pack 22, 20:41 the price jumps a LOT more than $2.89
That's cause the price of $25.52 was wrong. It went up after another hit and then went back to an earlier price of $25.52 so the price after the Gadgeteer was actually correct
looks like from pack 20-21 it randomly drops and the jump up is a reset to what it should have been. Either way MKM is pretty terrible to buy right now.

While I had the same thought, we're assuming there were even enough to matter - iirc the last one he opened had exactly one Slime, and not even a crime novelist. Or maybe one crime and no slime.
It's funny how that common is worth more than most of the mythics in the set. Definitely should be counted.
I opened a bundle and a box for this set and the only slime I got was from my pre-release kit at my LGS. Over a playset of every other common :/
I found 2 slimes and 2 crime novelists in the Bundle, then got 2 more foil slimes free in a whatnot purchase, and found another crime novelist in a spur of the moment walmart buy
He also missed a crime novelist which admittedly wouldn’t break the goal to meet the value but it’s more value that could’ve been calculated

I’m no magic guru like the professor so excuse my ignorance but why is it that the majority of cards of value are land cards? Like I get it people need lands and have to buy them for their decks but shouldn’t the chase card be that special powerful creature or something? I feel like it used to be. But my point is why doesn’t wotc print more lands? Like every deck needs those duals except mono decks so if they want the game to be more affordable print a box of dual lands and call it something clever

Only is these retailed for $50 like jumpstart would the product been less of a flop….the cheapest mtg product other than a commander deck at $40 is a booster box at $140…..unaffordable for most is the entry is that high. Most ppl aren’t enfranchised enough to care about the singles market and some just wanna go to the store or lgs and buy product. That has gone out the window with the absurd prices and confusion behind too many products and types of boosters. Other card games do not have this issue!
Really hoping MKM value continues to crater so I can stash away a couple booster boxes for a flashback draft one day; it’s been my favorite draft set since NEO.

We got those weird Double Feature meets Epilogue boosters for Lord of the Rings (I genuinely can't remember what they're called, Holiday Edition or Jumpstart Volume 2) where they added a couple of new cards and did a lazy new showcase style by using the existing artwork in an odd scroll border. Strangely, I think that did alright? Probably because the set was pushed pretty hard for modern so there might have been alot more perceived value.

This has pretty much been exactly my experience in the last 6 or so sets. Used to, every once in a while, open a box that was worth it. Seem fortunate to get 1/2 your moneys worth now..... and the crappy play boosters are now more than set boosters were...
Please do a video showing the Murders at Karlov Manor mystery puzzle stuff, like the alt colours on cards, and the artwork on the back of the Clue tokens!
